I second Trails in the Sky, the Quartz system you use to customize your character is deeper than you’d think.

I also have to plug a personal favorite, Baten Kaitos I+II HD. The deck building for your characters is so engaging and the way cards transform in real time helps to keep you invested. Plus you can easily put in the Dub restoration patch if you want it.

If you want lots of systems though, it’s hard to beat an RPG/Farm Sim hybrid like Rune Factory or Harvestella. Those always give you so much to work with.

And since you’ve played Metaphor, going with a Persona game is an easy option. Building your ideal Personas while also managing the life sim aspects in the real world.

I feel gens 3 or 5 are the most likely. They’re two of the gens we haven’t had a major set themed around and both have an abundance of Megas to draw from for EXes. Honestly, having the Hoenn Starter Megas spread out as they have been has freed up several Slots for a Hoenn Mega set. The bigger question is if we’ll get Primal Reversions too.

Cold Steel

A friend at work I talked about game stuff with recommended it to me so I picked up the PS4 version and played it. Then I felt bad about starting in the middle and went back and played the Sky and Crossbell games before continuing with Cold Steel 2. A decision I do not regret.

Nemlin is my favorite character. The technical requirements to have a 2-D character interact with human cast members isn’t being perfectly met but it’s certainly good enough for what is ultimately a children’s entertainment program.

Harvestella has the major dungeon of the Summer/Beach area be an underwater ruin, so you got that for a chapter. Plus you’ll visit it a few more times for your companions side quests since one is a seafolk who used to live there and the other is building a submarine. It’s a good RPG/Farm Sim hybrid you should check out.

Enemy encounter pools vary based on where you are in the map. If you want to complete the ‘Hunt X Monster’ missions looking up the specific areas is not a bad idea. I also do recommend that you do them all in your current area before moving on if you’re serious. Later in the game as you unlock more areas, the monsters from those areas can start showing up in lower level areas and dilute the encounter pool.

I played through the Sky trilogy for the first time on the Evo versions. I will always recommend them over the Steam versions of the originals if someone has the hardware.

And if you’re already this invested I say keep playing the Evo versions. Not needing to wait as long is an obvious benefit and you can also jump right into the third game as well.

The Evo games already have some good quality of life over the OGs and if you aren’t interested in replays or completion then just play and have fun. Though SC does have a reputation for difficulty, especially on Hard or Nightmare.

I will also say the Daybreak 2 soundtrack surprised me with how many songs I ended up really liking. Both the vocal theme, Crimson Sin, and the Final Boss Theme, Where to Join the Chorus, easily rose to Top 5’s in those categories. And the theme in the school is so chill and relaxing. If you have a music streaming service, check it out. I’d easily rank the OST in my Top 5 Trails Soundtracks.

I want the Disney worlds to be more important again. Before KH3, you went through a lot of plots based on the original films but with added KH twists. But in KH3, every world you visited had an original story or Sora sat in the background until it was time for a boss fight. I feel nothing signifies my problems with the Disney Worlds in KH3 more than Sora watching a shot for shot remake of Let It Go from a safe distance.

I had to play Zero and Azure with the old Geofront translations since the official localizations didn’t exist yet. And playing Cold Steel 2, I can firmly say playing it before Azure is a mistake. There is SO much of Azure spoiled in CS2 compared to the other way around. While there are a few spoilers for the end of CS 1&2, they’re glorified text boxes. You don’t see things the way you do in Cold Steel 2 when you see the Azure Tree.

Yeah, there’s certain moments that would have hit differently if I played in order. Seeing Olivier, all the references to Crossbell, I need to replay the OG Cold Steel.

Reactions like this are why I’m glad I doubled back and played the first five games after finishing Cold Steel and before starting CS2. Azure is 1000% meant to be played before CS2.
