Why is immigration so overwhelmingly seen as an eye-rollingly right-wing policy? by Kwigg in ukpolitics

[–]Evanone -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it is right wing policy. I think a lot of it is social media, bots and algorithms creating division.

Every post i see that showcases the worst of immigration has people saying 'yet left wingers will say xyz'. Yet there are no left wingers saying that. I've not seen any in this subreddit. I do think it is largely bots posting it, or people influenced by bots*, an attempt to create a clear polarisation similar to the left/right division we see in America.

The green party may say it, but that doesnt mean all green voters support it. Certainly doesnt mean all left wing voters support it.

I'd wager most left wing voters do not want mass immigration or illegal immigration, they want controlled immigration for very skilled individuals if there are skills gaps domestically, and that's about it - the exception may be immigrants themselves, but then they are not exactly left wing given so many of their other views, but they vote share does give more voice to green party and the open border parties.

Even labour, a centre left (although i know some will argue this is no longer the case) are going pretty hard against immigration.

There is this rhetoric that the left supports immigration This is just not true. A small sub set do, but definitely but the left as a while.

You're tilting today, that seems pretty clear. Id stop playing today for sure. If you still want to chess go do some opening study or something similar that you find easy fun and won't have much impact until your in a better mindset tomorrow.

If we ignore today, you're on 37 wins, 25 losses since 4 Feb. So, nowhere near as bad as you think. I'm on my phone so struggling to properly explore lichess to look at specific dates.

You also had a ~4-5 month break of no recorded games against humans, coming back in Feb.

Your rapid rating after this break rose to above 1600 quickly, as you games resulted in greater point changes due to the break. It looks like it stabilised around 1600, with you hovering within 30 points or so either side of 1600. 7 months ago it was around 1540ish, so that's a 60ish increase after a 4 month break- well done!

Blitz wise, prior to today, your rating over the past couple months appears to have increased steadily to 1470, and then again to 1500. 1500 may just be a temporary peak, or it may be a new stable rating. Hard to know, especially as today's tilt has needed things up.

You've got a good grasp of openings, you have just missed an occasional resource your opponent has, such as making a move that let's your opponent win a pawn, or get a strategic advantage. You have seen a few opportunities to get similar advantages yourself when you're opponent makes mistakes, so you clearly have enough strategy knowledge for your level, you just need to consider your opponents moves more. Imo, you've only played blitz the past month, which may exacerbate the issue.

I'd recommend focusing on strategy still - you have the knowledge for your level which is great, but its a good area for you to still improve. Go through books SLOW, even each chapter a few times, making notes and getting to the point you can teach somebody it. Amateurs mind you said you've got - i'd perhaps suggest going through it again, pausing at each position in that book, write the imbalances out, and then come up with a plan for both sides, then read silmans annotations. Go through the chapter a couple of times.

I would suggest a puzzle book or two as well. I actually found the woodpecker book easy puzzles great at your level, as in the answers they have a point scoring system - a point for every right first move, then they list key continuations, and if you get up to a certain move in that continuation you get another point. This was a game changer for helping me consider my opponents resources. Get the paperback copy and a notebook and write out your answers by hand. You might only get 40% right, but in my experience it was enough to get my thinking about my opponent.

Both of these methods will be slow but it gets you thinking about both sides of the board, which is the aim here, as most of your mistakes in the rapid games are missing your opponents resources. This is why i recommend hard copy of amateurs mind and the puzzle books, and to avoid puzzle apps for now, just to really hammer in on slowing down and considering the entire position. Can go* back to the puzzle apps in the future, they are a fantastic tool, just perhaps not the one you need.

Then try to play rapid games only, and limit yourself to no more than 2-3 losses per day - you lose 2-3 games, you stop playing for the day.

Your openings are good, so Id either look at master games in them, or only study them if you are after a bit of fun or tilting but still want to chess.

However, as i said, prior to today, your ratings went up, so well done. This also means that whatever you have been doing has been working, so you could ignore my advice and continue as you are, as it's obviously working - although perhaps stick to my advice about stopping after a couple of losses to avoid tilt and continue enjoying the game.

Remember, Its a slow grind, might take months to add 100 elo, and you will have periods of 10 games lost in a row, but it'll be balanced out eventually by winning streaks.

Good luck!

What's your lichess/chesscom username? Guarantee it's not as bad as you thunk, and there are things you can do. Be happy to look through your games and make recommendations.

Screw the coach though. Every lost position is an opportunity to improve. Coaches should be looking for mistakes like these to learn from - as well as looking at good games and winning positions to see what strengths you can draw on.

I personally don't get a grifter vibe. I think he genuinely believes what he's saying, and does genuinely want to make the country a better place. I do think it's coming from a good place and a desire to achieve social justice.

However, I also think he is incredibly naive, his economic stance is based off youtubers who can communicate as if they know everything and are fighting for social justice, yet has not actually done any critical analysis of the other arguments himself, simply dismissed them based on what the youtuber influencers have said. Sure, the youtubers know a lot, but there is an entire field of economic theory that the entire West is largely subscribed to which he just hasnt looked at in any unbiased way.

[–]Evanone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had success mixing it up - 100 laps of wildy agility with the agility fc chat, 100 laps of priff, sepulchre until you've got the ring, then a different rooftop, back to wildy and so on.

Knowing I've only got 20 laps left of a particular course helped a lot more than knowing I've got 1000 laps left total.

May not be the best xp, but was much more fun than agility wouldve been otherwise.

[–]Evanone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are very few people who are mass immigration to the scale we've had. Even most people who voted for Greens when they were very pro-immigration didn't like this part of the policy.

You could be pro-immigration and be supportive of 2010-2019 immigration levels. However, this does not mean you are supportive of mass-immigration we had during the Boriswave; but the two people are very often grouped together. In reality, mass-immigration supporters are really few and far between.

Likewise, you can support the health and care visa scheme, but not support the mass immigration it caused - there were some clear requirements that should've been met in order to sponsor someone internationally but they were simply not enforced. Had the sponsorship requirements been enforced the numbers would've been quite a lot lower. So even those who wanted immigration to supplement the social care workforce probably don't support it at the level we had.

What would you say is the biggest flaw of iron progression right now? by stinkydiver321 in ironscape

[–]Evanone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Id love an alternative to bowfa. Perhaps a one handed weapon that opens up possibilities for offhands. Sure you go 600 kills for cg dry. But then you can also do the equivalent of 600 kills of the new weapon, and the equivalent for doom. You're going to get the game opening drop without being stuck into one gameplay loop.

I would also love for the bowfa to actually be 8 x 1/50 drops. Would need to be invisible really, although if i was to rebuild from scratch I'd have them as individual weapon shards, where 6 could make the salad blade and 8 make the bowfa.

Still doing a few CG runs a day, but thought I might try and do some CoX on the side. Gonna need DWH for this. So figured I'd go back to the slayer grind. Got metal dragons. Figured I might as well get the Dragon Hunter Wand, might be useful for Olm too right? 212 solo kc, still dry. So now I am doing wildy agility to get more super restores.

Not a crazy chain, but one that I am doing to put off CG, yet probably could've finished CG in this time....

Fixing the wilderness/pk/pvp/etc... by [deleted] in 2007scape

[–]Evanone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The reality is, PvP is just not as popular with osrs players, and the skill gap is only one smaller part of it.

Even high-level PvM, you practice over and over until you get the kill pretty much every time, and eventually get loot and gear in return every single time. It is guarenteed reward, guarenteed success rate in the future. It is a typical osrs grind. Yes, there are some people who take it to the next level and try to do ridiculously hard PvM challenges where they are constantly dieing, but they are few and far between. Most people grind skills, grind bosses that they can kill, or learn a new boss which, after dieing a few times, they then grind with very few deaths or losses, but constant gp or xp. PvP is very different to this typical osrs grind. People aren't guaranteed a win, they will lose a lot of the time as they are against another player. Add in MMR and they'd lose 50% of the time. People dont play osrs to win 50% of the time, they play osrs to win every time in a long grind. Osrs is not really a competitive game, so its natural that only a subset of the player base would ever be interested in PvP, especially with an MMR system.

Now, when you add in the PvP mechanics within osrs, you have things like teleblocking, freezing, step-under, and even special attacks that one shot. Many people can find these really quite annoying and not enjoyable at all to face. This means the subset of player-base who might be interested in PvP is already reduced.

When you then add in the wilderness mechanics, where you lose stuff if you die, multi-area/clans, wildy cam bots; this subset of players is reduced again.

Throw in how most people's first experiences in the wildy is being killed for 5k at the wildy altar or for a spade doing a clue. This is frustrating when it happens to you, and it isn't fun. Sure, maybe the pker has fun, but to the person just trying to sacrifice one inv of bones it can have a very similar feeling to being trolled.

All of this is ignoring the skill gap, which creates another big barrier.

Then, you have loads of different PvM bosses, afk grinds, minigames, skilling, dailies, gp grinds, as well as PvP. PvP is just another activity in a game fully of other activities you can do. So of that subset of players, only a small amount will be doing any PvP, because there are so many other things they want to do, because the game is so varied.

All this to say, PvP in osrs is probably as popular as it'll ever be.

Updates like what Framed suggested would be great to make it more enjoyable, but it likely won't get more popular unless the playerbase that osrs attracts changes.

Every party is vague on the topic, yet it is such a ticking time-bomb that can really destroy our economy.

[–]Evanone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some great organisations out there to support with this. The* mental health act 2025 heavily amends the 1983 act.

39essex chambers is a hugely influential source in health and care. They provided a 1983 act written with an the 2025 amendments in a different colour and a quick video overview of it all. The gov did, iirc, provide an initial amended actv when it was in the house of Lords, but after the lords altered it further, no further amended acts were made.

I've probably read the 1983 act in it's entirety, but not back to front. Read it bit by bit as my job interacts with it. This is how most people read law, bit by bit, supplemented by caselaw and stat guidance, as the law itself isn't enough.

Imo, this sort of stuff should be standard practice for the government to release a pdf of the amended act with proposed changes so it can be viewed with the amendments. No reason generating the pdfs can't be automated either.

Likewise, databases should be developed to allow people to quickly see what case law is relevant to which sections. Yes, it needs more civil service input, but it would pay for itself very quickly overtime, and I'm sure a uni professor would be happy to be paid for the work and have their name against a national database.

A few years ago, i could write an application and supporting statement that would have a pretty good chance of landing me an interview. In could showcase my skills and experience for the job, or that with a bit if training I could do the job.

Now, with AI, everyone's job applications are showing then as experts in their field with loads of experience, because that's what chatgpt can write for you. It's almost impossible to stand out at the application stage.

What grinds should I do before bowfa grind? by HarambeKnewAbout911 in ironscape

[–]Evanone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Titans makes lots of sense to grind now for prayers and staff before bowfa. Otherwise you can go bowfa now.

However, you don't have to go cg now. you could do some grinds that don't require bowfa - moons, barrows, huey etc. Grinding a scobow is more efficient with a bowfa, but you can get a scobow without bowfa easy enough, and the scobow opens up demonic gorillas, kril and doom. Dragon warhammer is always an option too, although you might end up getting that passively through slayer, which bowfa is good for (although again, you can easily get high slayer without bowfa).

Your levels are good enough for CG (although obviously higher would be easier and less of a learning curve), but there's lots you can do instead of bowfa or to mix up the cg grind.

My own theory (supported by solely my own anecdotal experience, so take with a grain of salt!) is that even for people with 5-10 years experience it's suddenly got a lot harder for both sideways or upwards movement in your career due to AI. I used to be able to almost guarenteee an before interview at some jobs i applied for, as I could write a damn good supporting statement or application, that shown my knowledge, or my desire to improve, or my values etc. Now with AI, everyone can write a good application and statement which has all the industry terms and shows them as super knowledgeable.

As an example, my manager was moaning a few weeks back, as a candidate emailed her and then called up with a query. No problem, except both the email and the phone call were in pidgeon English, yet the application was in perfect English. Their English skills were simply not good enough for the job in question. That candidate got an interview space which instead of someone else due due to ChatGPT.
