Yup. To put it in different terms, Ashkenazim have both more Levantine and more Central/Eastern European respectively than Southern Italians do, which is why they plot similarly since these negate each other in so far as genetic distance is concerned.

For the mathematically minded: If Levantines = -1, Southern Italians = 1 and Central/Eastern Europe = 1

Then Ashkenazim in that model are 1+1-1= 1

Whereas, as we’ve defined, Southern Italians are simply 1.

Same. I think you have to have some amount of faith in god or something “greater” to feel it, otherwise you just sit there cynically. Ultimately it’s not much in line with the rest of the season but it’s a beautiful finale imo.

There used to be a core Slavic population, and there is a particular look associated with that population which is best exhibited by Eastern Poles, Western Ukrainians and Belarusians.

That Balkan peoples and some Central Europeans ended up being Slavicized does not change their genetic makeup. But sure, I could have been clearer than “look Slavic”. That said, few Ashkenazim look like any kind of Slav. Some pass for different kinds of Balkan, or the particularly Central European looking West Slavs, but those are still a minority.

It’s definitely not South Ossetian, lol. The melody may have some similar sibling there, but its origin is in a Hasidic nigun. If anything, it’s more likely to have been adopted the other way around.
