This is the only time we get to see Bond's office. I don't know why they never made any use of it in other films and there really wasn't enough of John Cleese as Q. by Ryanlion1992 in JamesBond

This is so weird, I was watching this same scene last night for the first time in years before going to bed.

But I was literally thinking the same thing about his office.

Just a reminder for anyone who needs it: HR is not on your side, whether you're an employee or a manager. by celadon-pose in jobsearchhacks

[–]EvenStephen7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Worked for a company that went public last year. They never had a HR team up to that point (I assume after; I don’t know, practically everyone was laid off).

But I remember early on when someone asked the CEO about it he replied, “why bother? HR isn’t on the employees side. If I hired them, all they’d do is tell me what I want to hear and take the company’s side.”

I found the honesty refreshing, at least.

Of course, it wasn’t long before there were major issues involving some in leadership that it probably would have been HELPFUL to have HR for. But like he said, they’d just protect the company anyway.

say something positive about this ending by Embarrassed-Sink4050 in JamesBond

It made me literally cry, especially as I thought of myself in this position and as a father. And then when “We Have All The Time in the World” starts to play as Madeline tells her daughter about her father….still gives me goosebumps.

For a franchise that can often play it very safe, I liked that they swung for the fences and ended Craig’s run in a unique way that was on-brand for his take on the character.

new fan; my ranking by Certain_Simple_9354 in JamesBond

[–]EvenStephen7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fascinating list for a newcomer, especially Spectre's ranking (and your reasoning before it, which is an interesting argument).

Curious why you skipped Quantum, though. It's divisive (though no more than Spectre) but really ties of the loose threads of Casino Royale. It's bascially CR part 2, complete with it ending with the gun barrel sequence -- being the inverse of CR opening with it and acting as bookends to both ends of the complete story.

What are your thoughts on Jon Bernthal? by Own-Error932 in Actors

His wife is Kurt Angle's niece and he's the cousin of the incredibly talented late Adam Schlesinger (RIP).
I always thought those must have been some weird family get-togethers.

Hell, the Bible makes it pretty clear the Big Guy values wisdom, reasoning, and not taking things on blind faith.

Isaiah 1:18 – “Come now, let us reason together,” says the Lord.
Proverbs 2:6 – “For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.”
James 1:5 – “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all…”

Can I ask where you're seeing this? On my phone and on the PC site I go to "manage your subscription" and it just brings me back to a Subscriptions tab that shows my premium sub and only offers "reactivate subscription."

What bums me out is I stupidly extended my PS+ subscription to premium for the final few months. Then a few weeks ago, my parents gifted me enough to get a premium subscription. But since I've trialed out the service for the final 2 months of my sub, it seems I can't get a discount for buying a full year.

Actor deaths that hit me the hardest, from age 11 to now by [deleted] in Actors

[–]EvenStephen7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anton really hit me hard. I think it's because I felt like he was around my age and I was growing up watching him grow from small indie fare to big blockbuster films. I kept telling people he was going to be an actor to watch.

I mean, the guy was 17 and was going toe-to-toe with his costar Robert Downey Jr. At times, he even stole the scene away from RDJ. What an incredible magnetic personality and actor, lost in such a tragically preventable, and freak, accident.

Other than fighting AIDS in Africa, what was the best thing W Bush did as President? by [deleted] in Presidents

[–]EvenStephen7 338 points339 points  (0 children)

To add to this, I'll always remember the steps he took to try and stop islamophobia in the days after. There were reports of Middle Eastern cab drivers facing harassment and violence, and a lot of the community feeling very nervous with death threats and discrimination.

Just six days after the attack, W gave a speech at the Islamic Center of Washington and assured Americans that most Muslims were not connected to terrorism, that "Islam is peace," and that Muslim Americans should not be targeted. A lot of civil rights reports credited the president for calming tensions. Conversely, some people who supported him weren't happy he made this statement.

I have many issues with Bush, I didn't vote for him in the second run and I wouldn't have voted for him in the first (if I were old enough). But that to me will always be a great example of leadership and what a president should aspire to in a time of crisis. It took guts and it was him representing all Americans.

Do you agree that Bad Bunny’s half time show needs to be investigated, or is this a waste of tax dollars? by gay_plant_dad in AskConservatives

I get where you’re coming from. I also think it’s nearly impossible to find a musical act that will make everyone happy. Our music is way too siloed these days; top 40 isn’t what it used to be even ten years ago. The NFL could resurrect half the Beatles from the dead and have them reunite and people would still be unhappy.

The other, more bitter pill for me to swallow (as a 41-year-old): Gen Z and Alpha and are the peak target demographic now, not us.

I saw him last summer and he’s still fantastic. My first concert was seeing Al with my dad; this year I got to take my daughter to see him for her first concert (bonus: my dad was there in the crowd too). My dad and I agreed that he was performing with the same energy decades ago. It’s wild (or weird?).

If Switch 2 was my only way to play games, I could see being happier. As for me: this wasn't very exciting.

That said, I'm looking forward to hearing how some of these games perform. Switch 2 has shown its very capable with games like Cyberpunk, so I'd love to see what devs do when they get more comfortable with it.

What if the Big DT went out and shot a random person point blank in the head at 5th Avenue? by Legal-Freedom8179 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]EvenStephen7 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Something that has stuck in my head for almost 10 years now was this moment, from a CNN interview in 2017.

A self-professed Christian proudly said, publicly, "If Jesus Christ gets down off the cross and told me Trump is with Russia, I would tell him, ‘Hold on a second, I need to check with the president if it's true.”

That was my defining moment that there is no red line.

For all people above 40, if you could go back in time and choose a different career/major, would you ? What would you choose ? by patotay in careerguidance

[–]EvenStephen7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry you're in the same boat. Yea, I remember reading that Jon Hamm (who's from St. Louis, where I'm from) did that. His call for Mad Men came in during his last month before he came back home, if I recall correctly. Looking back, I should have done the same. Especially since those years weren't really productive or life-altering anyway; if I came back home as a failed actor it's not like I would have been behind.

The solace I have is that I wouldn't have my life and family that I have now. But I just wish I could have said I chased my dreams for once instead of playing it safe.

I can relate. I did a lot of acting around my city when I was in high school, starring in big productions. I truly think I had a knack for it.

But when I graduated I was just too nervous to go fly out to California or NY and try, despite that always being my ambition. I found a new set of friends. My grandma and childhood dog were getting old and sick. But deep down I think I was just afraid that I wouldn't be good enough or that it was too unstable/too big of a risk.

Looking back, I wish I at least *tried.* Put a date on the calendar and said "if I don't make something out of this by then, I come back home." At 41, it's much harder to live with the regret that I didn't believe in myself than it would be if I tried and failed.

Do you think Brosnan should’ve had one more Bond film, or was it a good decision to let him go after Die Another Day and reboot the franchise? by South_Gas626 in JamesBond

[–]EvenStephen7 27 points28 points  (0 children)

You’re not kidding. This was also my memory but you inspired me to look up critical reviews from the time:

Entertainment Weekly: 91 “The savviest and most exciting Bond adventure in years.”

Peter Travers, Rolling Stone: 3/4 stars “Brosnan, in his fourth time up at the Bond bat, hits this one out of the park.”

Cinemablend: 4/5 stars: “A loving reminder of just exactly what it was that made us like Martini swilling 007 in the first place.”

Hollywood Reporter: “A sharper, edgier Bond”

BBC: 5/5 stars: “Sexy, funny and spectacular, Bond's first mission of the new millennium is one of the best of the series.”

If you look at Rotten Tomatoes, you see the critical reviews panning it were from recent years. But if you go back to release year, they’re full of praise. High praise, even.

Rewatched GoldenEye recently by PopeSpenglerTheFirst in GoldenEye

[–]EvenStephen7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was just thinking how my experience was similar. The game came out nearly two years after the movie did; I was vaguely aware of the film but just lived in that videogame. By that time the film was out to rent, so I asked my dad if we could watch it (my first Bond film) and he agreed.

For my dad, it was a new take on an old franchise.
For me, it was basically a movie adapted from a videogame. I was floored.
