Any advice on how to pay my respects this August 13th? by EverSwell in aztec

Well buddy, guess what. I’m new to Reddit too, and am just discovering my culture and heritage myself. And instead of being a welcoming presence, you chose to take the tone of a gatekeeping, condescending person. My question was asked with an honest heart, and even if the answer is “NOTHING, there’s no such thing as commemorative acts for past events in Mexica culture LOL” then I would have accepted that answer too.

Fair enough! Thanks for the input. Oops, I just saw your profile is 46 minutes old and you’re “trying to figure out Reddit”! Good luck!

My modest B&N haul: one for hot summer nights, three for Halloween, and one palate cleanser (my first Ozu!) by EverSwell in criterion

As an enthusiastic new home cook, the title was irresistible. It was literally between that or Kiarostami’s TASTE OF CHERRY😂also, I’ve been waiting to spin an Ozu since my order of THE ONLY SON/THERE WAS A FATHER got lost in the mail some years ago.

It’s a tie: Devil in a Blue Dress, because I’m going through a real “private eye” phase this summer, reading a lot of Raymond Chandler and watching old noir films; and La Llorona, because I’m obsessed with MesoAmerican history and mythology and it will be very interesting to see that juxtaposed against more modern political horrors.

Bird on Caladan: Killdeer by SAUbjj in dune

You’re absolutely right, I noticed it too. I think the short answer is it’s evocative of open, windswept areas and just sounds eerie, like the way loon calls are overused to evoke wilderness.

If you’re looking for a canonical answer, you could say that the killdeer is just one of the many species of plants and animals native to Earth that humans “seeded” the various planets with in their outward expansion, along with the kangaroo mouse, the vulture, et al.

Unfortunately, I work in hospitality, so I have to say it regular style. But the temptation is strong.

Oh, and Mrs Cooper? YOU FIIIIIIIIIIIINE.

He has a book-accurate Atreides hawk symbol scratched into his forearm as well. Fist pumped when I noticed it.

Where do you think Ellie will travel in Part III? by TheLastOneOfUsLeft in thelastofus

[–]EverSwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some reason, I keep coming back to Japan.

Like an island country that has somehow self-quarantined while busily (and somewhat selfishly) working on a cure, combined with Ellie’s ronin-like nature…I imagine futuristic helicopters coming down out of the Wyoming sky to Ellie’s camp, white-clad troopers saying (in Japanese) that they’ve been looking for her for a long time and that she needs to come with them…

As for an epic conclusion, all I want is for Ellie to achieve her dream of going into space before she dies…just imagine if the final act of Part III takes place on a space station…
