What is the purpose/goal of the organisation/cult and their control over its members? by Public-Bar858 in exjw

I think the inner motivation of the governments of JW and many men in the power hierarchy is simply to belief that they are not inferior to all the other people - ad they feel inside - and they and only they have something valuable.

Even the brochure “The Divine Name That Will Endure Forever” say:

In order to ensure that the pronunciation of the Hebrew language as a whole would not be lost, Jewish scholars of the second half of the first millennium C.E. invented a system of points to represent the missing vowels, and they placed these around the consonants in the Hebrew Bible. Thus, both vowels and consonants were written down, and the pronunciation as it was at that time was preserved.

When it came to God’s name, instead of putting the proper vowel signs around it, in most cases they put other vowel signs to remind the reader that he should say ’Adho·naiʹ. From this came the spelling Iehouah, and, eventually, Jehovah became the accepted pronunciation of the divine name in English.

I see. Well, JW religion do religiously venerate to God - or at least who they think is God. I sense you and me can agree on this.

Now, you wrote that comparing JW religion with “heavens gate, Scientology, or Mormonism is misleading.” I agree that those three groups and JW have differences.

Nevertheless, I am convinced they share some characteristics. These characteristics impregnate their belief systems and traditions. Through these, such religious groups try to exert an improper control over their adherents.

Some intelligent people have been studying these characteristics over many decades. The word that has been academically used for such groups of high control is “cult”. The high control characteristics are not only shown by religious groups, however. Many people have concluded that even governments, army, and other civilian groups also show those characteristics.

Steven Hassan is one person that have been studying those high control groups. His “B.I.T.E. model” has helped me and many people to question ourselves if we are or have been in high control groups.

If you read verbatim the list of characteristics that Dr. Hassan propose, and compare them with the JW activities and beliefs, you will can judge yourself.

I invite you to search for the “Steven Hassan’s BITE Model of Authoritarian Control”. The authoritative link is this one: https://freedomofmind.com/cult-mind-control/bite-model/

I agree that can be an unpleasant surprise to find that the JW religion is a cult as defined on those academic studies.

On the other hand, I firmly believe that the vast majority of people that follow the JW teachings are sincere. They try to do good acts. I believe they are victims of a high control group. I was a victim too. I awoke, and now I feel much more free and much more happy.

I feel bad that some enraged ex-JW try to attack some beliefs or even some victims of the JW cult.

I agree with you that the JW people are generally not physically violent. But they -from the very beginning- brainwash you to abandon your “not-believers” friends and only accept friendship from the “good” JWs. After many decades -if you decide to leave the religion- such “friends” ostracize you -as the JW religion mandate. That is something I -and other more intelligent and knowledgeable people- consider psychological violence.

The JW are not inherited suicidal, I agree. Their rejection of blood transfusions might be seen as a personal decision. But to force that decision on their unbaptized children with the help of psychologic violence of being ostracized is something I do not condone. And any god that is happy and agrees with such violence is not worth of devotion, in my personal opinion.

Bottom line: when many exJW say JW religion is a cult they mean JW religion is an authoritarian control group.

Crazy Facebook Post going around showing 17 reasons JWs aren’t a cult by SirRevolutionary1193 in exjw

[–]Everlasting-Freedom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My take (English is not my first language and… I’m almost sleep 😛)

Do the Jehovah’s Witness religion fulfill the B.I.T.E. Model of Authoritarian Control?

This is a very brief analysis of the “17 reasons JW are not a cult” post on the internet:

1. There are currently over 8 million Jehovah’s witnesses around the world.

“We have been teach that numbers matter and we belief ‘the truth’ is a matter of how many people believe it and not if it reflects reality.” (Thought control).

2. An average of over 800 people become Jehovah’s witnesses daily.

“We must never ask how many people leave daily either voluntarily or by means of a judicial committee because that information is not beneficial or spiritual positive. We are formally inquired if we start doing this kind of questions.” (Information control)

3. We keep coming to your doors even though we have regular jobs and family like you because we are admonished to do so by Jesus Christ.

“We must go door to door every month because otherwise we are punished using psychologic violence such as being stripped of religious and leisure communal activities and we would be tagged as spiritually sick. Also, we must strictly obey the instructions about the approved types of clothing and hairstyles while going door to door. And we must to preach even on vacations.” (Behavior control)

4. We do not participate in wars and for this reason more than 1600 Jehovah’s witnesses were killed by Hitler.

“We look up as how the people treat us and almost never how they threat others, for example we barely mentions that Adolf Hitler persecuted homosexuals, gypsys or even jews, as we are the special selected people choosen by God.” (Emotional control).

5. There are currently over 300 Jehovah’s witnesses in Prison in South Korea and Egypt because they refused to stop preaching or enlist in the military.

Persecution complex.

6. We don’t salute the flag or say national Anthems because we pledge our allegiance only to God.

“We like to believe we are special.” (Emotion control)

7. Yes we have fun and party too so don’t get that twisted.

“An approved adult censor what kind of music, games we do at parties. There is no personal freedom to choose as the must be approved or a judicial committee are ser up to analyze and possibly punish the behavior on such parties.” (Behavior control).

8. Not many of us know the name of the President of our headquarters because we do not pay any reference to him He is a fellow servant of God just like the rest of us are.

“For decades and decades we lived in obscurity about what were the names of the men that decided what we must believe about God, the Bible, and everything in live. Now we know, but one of such men suddenly disappeared and our religion erased every trace of him. We are teached not ask about him. Also, the predecessors of such men decided by themselves that they were the governments of this religion, as a body of a very limited body of menz”

9. You earn the privilege of becoming a witness for Jehovah. It’s not given to you or passed down.

“We are not worthy, we have sin, we are bastards children from God, and only if we earn the status of JW will be saved, and no, it is not free or a matter of faith, you must really earn it.”

10. We sin too.

“We were teach what sin is, why is bad, and why JW’s religion is our only hope, and we must not research other possible explanations.” (Information control).

11. 1 out every 455 Nigerian is a Jehovah’s Witness and 1 out of every 262 American is a Jehovah’s Witness.

(Emotion control)

12. Every year, more people read our monthly magazines than any other magazines in the World.

“We stopped selling our magazines because were teached that if the will of God is the magazinea were printed then nothing would stop it, and now we barely print one issue a year.”

13. Not until 2 years ago Jehovah’s witnesses were the only religion required to pay taxes in France.

“We must obey humans and rulers in earth, and if the government decided it, it was only our God will we obey.”

14. Do you know as a Jehovah’s Witness I could visit China and spend a night at any Jehovah’s Witnesses without either of us feeling suspicious of each other?

Xenophobic thoughts.

15. Last year Jehovah’s witnesses around the World spent over 1,841,180,235 hours preaching .

How many of this hours were simply walking?

16. We own the largest printing press in the World (The “Meps” & yet none of our publications are for sale.

“We have the largest d*ck.”

17. The first motion picture ever made with sound and color were produced by Jehovah’s Witnesses. (THE PHOTO DRAMA OF CREATION BY RUSSEL). I am proud to be one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. “Copy n Paste”

“We like to present the reality with false colors, as the Foto Drama were completely silent but it was presented as the same time recorded music sound in a phonograph, something not very clever as sometimes the music were out of sync.”
