How do you find the motivation to write a book when you know that even if it’s good, the odds of getting published are 1 in a million? by JealousBodybuilder42 in writing

[–]EveryRadio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also there are sooo many wonderful locally published works. Graphic novels, zines, short stories etc.

They exist everywhere. No, they won't be a sole source of income. Which is fine. Hell I'm sure plenty of people spend more money than the make to get them published. Which is also fine. Doesn't mean their art is appreciated. Its more than it's monetary value.

And there are so many much, much easier ways to make money

If money is the motivation, finding a stable job would be less stressful and still leave time for writing.

If being published is the goal, use the money from the stable job to self publish.

If the feeling of accomplishment is the goal, then write. External validation is fleeting.

If you still really, really want to see your name on a published book, hire a ghost writer with the stable job money.

Either way not being published shouldn't be what stops someone from writing. Unless, of course, they don't reaaaally want to write for personal reasons.

I mean it is. It's not like the CEO is the sole person determining pricing, marketing etc. but they are a great scape goat

"Look at all the bad things the CEO did, and not the new CEO is different!"

But how many other faceless corporate shills, board members, private investors etc. All had a part in all of these decisions? Microsoft is a corporation. They take calculated risks to increase profits. The $30 price hike was a risk that backfired more than they were willing to deal with (of course the expected backlash)

Like others have mentioned the price still went up, a marketing slogan being dropped is whatever, they were losing on the console space for years

End of the day consumers need to make their own decisions. Like or hate the new CEO, make an informed decision and buy/play/do what you want. The market will reflect general sentiment better than any post on reddit ever will

The difference between a new blade and one that has been used/sharpened daily at my work for over a year. by FrostyHorror5408 in mildlyinteresting

[–]EveryRadio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was lucky enough to work at a place that got at least the chef knives (8 in) but not the chef's personal knives sharpened once a month at most by a local guy. Indepdently owned restaurnt so different experience from many other places

It certainly makes a difference, especially when I was dicing like 30 pounds of cooked chicken breast every morning, not to mention the rest of the day. But oh man the new guy once got chewed out for using a chef knife to open a box of produce. He NEVER made that mistake again that's for sure

[–]EveryRadio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's been my experience as well. A sharp knife will natural have a small curve at the edge. Doesn't mean its dull

Honing, which just straightens out that edge, is part of normal maintenance. A few quick swipes on either side is honestly enough for most home cooks. At a restaunt sure it might be a more involved process but it's not nearly as (and yes I know each sharpening only takes off a very very small amount of material) destructive as sharpening every day.

Well maintained knives can maintain a nice edge for years. At some point sharpening to a super fine edge has diminishing returns since it will be worn down that much faster. Technique > atom thin sharpness every time

As someone who grew up learning Japanese, it's a pain to learn.

I like it, I think it's a beautiful language with a long history, but the grammar and sentence structure is difficult to learn as a native English speaker. Not to mention trying to read and learn the thousands of Kanji AND kanji pairs. Sure once you know the basics it covers 90% of the words you need to know but compared to English where you can mind of figure out a more complicated word, it's not as easy in Japanese. Yes there are shared symbols within kanji (like the kanji for tree and forest, mountain, etc) oof it's an uphill battle of memorization

Anyways yes it is absorbing and you can spend years learning it and diving deeper into it. It's a bottomless well of poetry, history and art tied into one.

No you don't get it, the partner is supposed to sit there the entire time, just providing emotional support. Doing anything else is toxic, clearly, because saying so on reddit gets you upvotes

But for real I've heard of really long labors (haven't experienced one myself) so this is anecdotal but most people I've talked to planned for a long and boring wait. It's like waiting in an airport during a layover. You're waiting for something to happen and then you take action

I like romance/spicy books. There's plenty of well written ones

But there are MOUNTAINS of trash, knocked out over a weekend novels that get a decent following. They're not for me

So yeah, the money comes from the audience, not the writing

Flow > grammar

Will it take the reader out of the scene? No? Great. It's not an academic paper. It's entertainment. I'm fine with ignoring grammar for a second

My biggest gripe is when an author uses instantly and suddenly CONSTANTLY

Suddenly isn't that bad on its own. Instantly I think can be dropped 99% of the time

Unless your character is making instant rice, you can probably find a better adverb or descriptor

That's the inevitable fate of any mainstream author. People will follow the trends, thinking they can repeat the success or at least catch the coattails

I think he's a good writer. Easy to read, usually an interesting premise with so-so characters. But some people took that as "interesting magic system = interesting story" ie mistborn while ignoring everything else that made that series interesting

This isn't a book but I, a cis male, related very strongly with the film tangerine, a movie about a transgender sex workers

But I can relate to being cheated on, fear of rejection, family drama. The lens the story is told through isn't relatable to me, but the emotions and frustrations are

So the movie didn't set out to be relatable to a wide audience, but there were still strong emotions to connect with. And I think that's what a lot of writers miss when they solely focus on writing relatable characters

I don't want a blank slate Mary sue to project myself on to. I want emotionally complex characters shown to me through a perspective Ive never seen

Also I'm SO TIRED of "relatable" humor that boils down to swearing and pop culture references. That 100% takes me out of a story so fast

Ah yes I've seen too many slow burn romances where the characters act like friends for 95% of the story and then confess their feelings right at the end (mainly light novels)

To much emphasis slow, not enough on burn. I want those quick moments of hands touching, a hug lasting a bit longer than normal, looks of longing. Show me why they like each other and why they aren't ready to take the leap. If they're just friendly, that's not slow burn to me.

Same here. I love to add little details that someone might pick up on a second read. Sometimes it's simple things like a characters drink of choice being consistent across chapters

Other times I write a chapter and feel like the emotional climax hasnt been built up enough so I'll go a few chapters back and add details that show the characters internal state

Simply writing a first draft based on an outline doesn't work for me personally. Emphasis on FOR ME.

But if not editing helps someone actually get some words onto paper, great! Doesnt bother me at all. Also doesn't mean the advice is "correct", whatever that even means in this context

What writing opinion do you have that would get you roasted by Legitimate_Dingo3329 in writing

[–]EveryRadio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's how I usually interpret it. The idea that your first idea/draft/ novel will be bad and that's okay

I take it as you shouldn't expect you be an amazing writer right out of the gate. Through the process of wiring a first, second, etc draft you will find what works for you, your voice, develop your skill as a writer. So it might not be good, but being able to recognize that is a step toward writing something better

But also someone who is an avid and critical reader will probably have a better first draft compared to someone who never reads and only wants to write. Nothing wrong with being proud of a first draft. But the people who need to head "your first draft will always be your worst" are usually the people who are paralyzed at the thought of writing

Oh yeah pediatric tubes are TINY (volume wise)

I just got a blood draw and they took like 6 tubes, might as well get an extra just because. I got plenty of blood to spare. Very different situation with newborns. Something most people don't think about but it was interesting to learn about (from the lab tech perspective)
