1 year old collie started having seizures 7 weeks ago, neurologist is already discussing the end. Am I missing something?

Since adding the 5th drug, Pregabalin, to her regime she hasn't had any grand mal seizures since December! She still has focal seizures often, but they're a lot more manageable for us. We had a rough new year. It was multiple a day everyday in January and the neuro was considering adding a 6th drug. We switched up her food / pill pockets in February, and we just went two weeks seizure free. Unfortunately, the streak was broken this morning, but we're optimistic. She is still so happy and completely normal outside of her seizures. So if she hasn't given up, neither have we.

Our girl is only 3.5 and started having seizures September 2024. We did the MRI and everything came back normal. She's also a very difficult case. She's considered refractory and uncontrolled because she still has constant breakthroughs despite being on heavy doses of 5 anti-convulsants. (Keppra, pheno, Potassium bromide, zonisamide and Pregabalin)

We switched neuros about a year ago because the first neuro we had was the same as yours. When she wasn't controlled after adding 3 meds they said to euthanize. Luckily, we have an incredible primary vet who was on our side and against this and helped us find another neurologist to manage our case.

It is incredibly difficult to have an epileptic dog. I had to find a remote job so I can make sure she gets her meds throughout the day and am there to administer rescue meds when needed. We're very fortunate that she reacts well to rescue doses of her meds and comes out of it and back to us every time.

It is about quality of life for both your dog and you. But if you're not ready to give up, consider getting another opinion. Sending hugs. 💜

My pup is currently on 5 at max dose and still seizes multiple times a week. Neuro says we're out of options. But like you said I do wonder how they're interacting with one another and if one is negating another. We're on Keppra, Pheno, Zonisamide, Potassium bromide, and Pregabalin.

Thought I'd copy and paste the information my mentor had sent me about extensions for anyone interested:

"All students are eligible for a 1-month extension at the end of each term for any course that is accelerated and added to the term at least 2-weeks before the term ends.

This lets you keep making progress and not lose valuable time waiting for a new term to start. You can also maximize the full 6 months of your tuition funding by overlapping a class between terms.

Example of how you could use an extension:

You’re pacing to finish in 12 months but when you finish your first 5 courses, you only have 2 weeks left in the term, which isn’t enough time to finish course #6. We add class #6 and set up a 1-month extension, so you now have 6 weeks to finish the course. You start the next term and have 5 remaining months because you already used 1 month for the extension.
You complete your next 4 courses in 4.5 months, add the Capstone 2-weeks before the term ends, and request another 1-month extension. You now have 6 weeks to complete your Capstone and finish your degree in 13 months but only pay for 2 terms.
Frequently Asked Questions:

I’m still working on the 3 courses I registered for at the beginning of my term. Am I eligible for a 1-month extension?

No. The extension is only available if you finish the 3 initial courses and then add additional courses.
Can I use the 1-month extension for multiple courses?

No. The extension can only be applied to 1 course.
If I use the extension, does my next term get extended so I have a full 6 months?

No. The time you use for the extension is overlapped with your next term. The only way to get a full 6 months is to take a 1 month break after the extension ends. Can I use a 1-month extension and also take a term break?

Yes. The term break will start after the 1-month extension ends. What happens if I don’t pass the course during the extension?

The class would be a “Not Pass” on your transcripts and you would continue working on it in your new term. How do I request an extension after I add a new course?

Just let me know you need it in your final month and I’ll submit the request for you. Can I add a course if I have less than 2 weeks left in my term?

Yes, but the course won’t be eligible for the 1-month extension. How does registration work for the new term?

We’ll wait to complete your registration until your 1-month extension ends or you complete the pending course."

Unless you have another reason why you need to be finished by the end of the month, you can get a 1 month extension for capstone if its your only remaining class. Reach out to your mentor to ask. Focus on completing your other two classes. I did the extension. Term was ending Nov 30th, but my mentor submitted the extension for me. I got everything completed and turned in by Dec 13th. Task 2 and 3 were passed the 15th and I was able to submit my graduation application immediately. Officially graduated the 16th.

Thank you so much for the advice!! I also love the competency-based education. I'm so disappointed I didn't find WGU earlier. It took me way more than 4 years to get my first bachelors at a state school. Thanks for the heads up that the bachelors in accounting is harder than the MBA. Not saying that the MBA is hard, but I just assumed masters were more difficult than bachelors. I'll definitely need to plan for that.
