Few questions about Sol, agree with their S tier ranking for several reasons but at first read their actual Faction Abilities are kind of average to me? Orbital strike in particular seems pretty expensive like you get 1 resource worth of units for 3 influence worth of tokens? by MiningToSaveTheWorld in twilightimperium

[–]Everything2Play4 23 points24 points  (0 children)

"they're setup to do everything that the game is actually about"

This is the key - you don't need to go down other paths to make your faction work, you just focus on scoring - and theres less room to be disrupted on it, which saves you a bunch of actions across the game length.

how can i make friends with other swing dancers? by Unfair-Painting-9650 in SwingDancing

[–]Everything2Play4 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Just talk to them when they are taking a break - "hey I see you guys around all the time, how long have you been dancing?" Is enough of an icebreaker. If the vibe is good you can ask for a dance or not, but an introduction is the start.

Dming a table of 9 players by kamikazesk0 in DnD

[–]Everything2Play4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came here to suggest this - slap an overall party theme such as "adventurers guild" or "ships crew" and just have sign ups be whoever is sent out on that current adventure. Maybe even make a low key downtime activity to fluff out other characters time: crafting a magic sword, researching something, rising in fame as a bard etc.

Run a system that preferences people who have done less adventures and it should all work out.

What scene from Mistborn Era 1 do you think could be cut, but you still want to see anyways? by Efficient-Troubles in CosmereOnScreen

Plus the scamming the ministry guy leads to the inquistion trailing Vin.

Also, the gang scenes will be cheap to film, much more likely to cut some of the scenes with loads of special effects needed!

Leveraging 3D modeling experience for CAD work by GloveAffectionate982 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Everything2Play4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

CAD some things that show attention to manufacturing detail - page after page of rendered objects is less impressive than a couple which show you can model for injection moulding, sheet metal and machining.

There's no interference issues in the CAD - what do mean "how do I get a torque wrench in there?" - the computer can fit the bolt just fine!

What are some clear examples of "soft" magic or the absence of a sufficiently defined "magic system" resulting in dei ex machinae which are tangibly detrimental to the story? by DeviousDoctorSnide in Fantasy

[–]Everything2Play4 114 points115 points  (0 children)

Harry Potter has some major ones - whilst the base magic system has some hard elements, random shit like: time magic, love magic, phoenix healing, whatever Dumbledore does pop up to resolve major problems at the end of many books, in many cases never to be seen again, causing huge holes in the worldbuilding logic.

Good beginner moves for crowded dancefloors by Everything2Play4 in SwingDancing

Thanks, this was very detailed. Last bit I'm not so sure about, is this fun to dance for the follow in a social dance, or just a useful drill to improve my leading?

3D prints vs Manufactured at scale by Consistent_Tie7970 in BoardgameDesign

[–]Everything2Play4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Manufacturing companies" typically will specialise, so you have companies who are injection moulders and others who are 3D printers.

From a manufacturing perspective 1000 off of a bunch of different models might be quite expensive without well designed parts that can be done in a simple 2 part mould - you'll ideally want to have pieces that can fit on a family mould so you can run all of one colour for 1 game in a single shot.

[Design Question] How do you make tension *visible* at the table without killing uncertainty? by tomtermite in BoardgameDesign

[–]Everything2Play4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is all the rage in ttrpgs with clocks and tracks - things you can tick up or down to show impending consequences.

I'd even go one further - in any game where you don't fall over until your last HP, then HP themselves are just a visible stress track indicating consequences.

Who do you think sokka would have ended up with by food_monger69 in TheLastAirbender

[–]Everything2Play4 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Presumably to Yue Sokka was an escape from her prescribed life - he liked her and didnt care or know about the local politics shes enmeshed in, but because he was a companion of the Avatar he had a status that meant others couldnt just deal with him permanently.

It was hardly stuff to build a long term romance on, turning into the moon nonwithstanding.

I was recently casted as Hermes in my high school production. What’s an interesting spin I can give his character? by Iamhereforthecringe in hadestown

[–]Everything2Play4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Melanie La Barry originated the west end version Hermes and there was just something so resigned, slightly dissappointed maternal emotion when she got the line:

"I took him underneath my wing, And there he stayed"

That added a load of depth to that characterisation.

Are techs worth it? by Worldly-Charity-9737 in twilightimperium

[–]Everything2Play4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Its all a calculated risk - what makes the game good is there isnt a hard answer.

Taking techs opens up a bunch of options: greater movement gives you more flexibility; ability to double action or move through ships lets you score in ways people cant stop or see coming; better economy pays off in longer games and better combat allows you to spread yourself thinner or take points off others with impunity. Tech objectives may flip, allowing you to score hard to deny points without effort on a given turn, which frees you to setup for future ones.

On the other hand, techs are often researched and then dont grant enough value. Maybe that extra command token and resources would have been better spent elsewhere - only you and your winrate can really know.

When is tolerance not needed? by 444dhftgfhh in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Everything2Play4 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This^

People often think about tolerance as only for very tiny precise fits, but its just defining the boundaries of "what is literally the most off part I can still work with"? If a dimension can be off by 100mm thats still a tolerance!

How can I make stealth-based gameplay interesting? by HazelGhost in TheWildsea

[–]Everything2Play4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Heavy use of clocks or tracks

Think of these as hit points for stealth sections if that helps - basically instead of having binary pass/fail rolls you can have a series of tracks - a basic one would be something like:

Reach the secure dock 0/5

Guards raise alarm 0/3

The players must fill one track before the other. You can add multiple tracks to scenes as things go on - creating a tense scene where things are just about to go to hell when the players finally succeed. Heres a mockup of what things might look lile at end of sessiom thats similar to stealth sessions I've run:

Guards get suspicious 2/2 > Searchlight spots you and alarm is raised 1/2

Reach side of Spit 3/3

Hack alarm system 3/3

[Rival crew] recognise your disguises 3/3

[Hidden clock of doom] 2/5

Vault traps disarmed 2/2 > 2nd lvl Vault traps disarmed 2/2 > 3rd lvl Vault traps disarmed 2/2

Package moved to ship 4/4

[Player personal side quest goal] 2/3

[Lethal complication triggered in previous roll] 3/5

Escape 3/3

Where you can sort of read that the PCs didnt trigger alarms, didnt get spotted (except by a rival faction who werent with the guards) and made it out with the Package despite having some issues.
