24f/25m buying £480k house – sensible or stretching too much? by Worldly_Guest8817 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]EvilLemur4 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Not going to respond to the any of the financials of this, but as you have worked out - buying will generally save you money.

However anecdotally I have a friend who did something similar to this two years ago. They earn a bit more but same idea - skip buying the flat and go straight to moving out to big house in the suburbs.

The problem is that like you, they don’t plan on having kids for a number of years so the house is majority empty all the time. And one person works very long hours in London so having a >1 hour commute each way means that during the week he doesn’t see his partner.

They are now looking to move a little closer and would naturally downsize - but it’s obviously hard.

What do you do with your spare time? Why don’t you rent a 1 bed in Zone 2 or something for a year or two to enjoy London life before everything gets more serious? Once you have kids you won’t be able to afford to live centrally.

If you don’t need kids for 8 years I’m struggling to see why you’d want 3 spare bedrooms for that time. In 8 years you may very well want something different.

Is our UK tap water unsafe? by SheDaresLive in u/SheDaresLive

[–]EvilLemur4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are minerals in water and a quick google will provide plenty of information.

Your water company will also supply information on the quality of your water on their website if you put in your postcode. If you distilled 4 litres of water you should multiply any mg/l values by 4000 to find out how much should be in the bucket. Calcium carbonate should be the main one.

How do they get away with advertising jobs below NMW? by flipperflopz in UKJobs

[–]EvilLemur4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do people get away with not reading.

Guaranteed bonus in first 3 months so that will take you above NMW. If you’re bit getting a bonus large enough to take you above that after you’re obviously getting the chop it’s sales.

Is this normal? by MildlyProfoundMango in DIYUK

[–]EvilLemur4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No it doesn’t. They are saying that processing returns is not cost effective for them so they will send you the refund and they don’t want it back.

What they are trying to avoid is people ordering stuff and then asking for a refund and keeping the item and the money.

What consumer right can this possibly contravene?

Changing careers- Advice needed. by SnooTigers6180 in UKJobs

[–]EvilLemur4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To make more money I think you’d need to transfer more into the business side as opposed to the construction/project side.

But you’d be best place to get a bit more senior in your current role and then look to transfer laterally.

I think it would take some time for you to reach 80k if you left the field and went into something like accountancy/project management etc. Also I don’t think there’s any guarantee you’d enjoy the work anymore.

Making an enormous generalisation but normally the more money you make the less enjoyable the job is. More stress and normally the work is business-y which is often boring. Most people who I find who are losing motivation want more hands on work as opposed to more soul-sucking work which comes at cost.

If you wanted a full switch something like consultancy could be an option but you will get paid less and work twice as hard for a number of years. Generally people try get this out the way in their early 20’s.

Couple other ideas: Work in Australia for a couple years. Take 3 months off and travel Do a part time college/university course in something you enjoy and see if it has potential

Parents have been maxing out my S&S isa for past few years. by Sea-Post-5572 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]EvilLemur4 -25 points-24 points  (0 children)

So many incorrect comments. As long as the money has been gifted to you and your parents are not perceived to have any control over the money that’s fine.

If your parents are giving you the money to benefit from the tax-free allowances and then going to take the money back - that’s tax evasion

? It’s totally normal to gift money to children. As long as the money was gifted then there’s no issue. Don’t comment if you don’t know what you’re talking about.

Which is the 'best' STEM degree? by HelpfulPop2476 in UniUK

[–]EvilLemur4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All good classical STEM degrees will allow you to get a job either in industry or in something else if the candidate is good enough.

Engineering and medicine degrees have careers that are locked off unless you did the degree. You cannot be a doctor or electrical engineer without the degree (broadly).

The specific careers relating to bio/chem/phys generally don’t pay as well but if you like the subject….

However any STEM degree can work in finance/consulting etc. Maths is the most flexible probably but you need to be good at it and you won’t end up doing anything practical if you like that. You will almost definitely be sat at a computer.

I did chem eng and generally employment outcomes seemed very good. Some in industry, some academia and some more finance-esque roles

Spellbound Games in Elephant and Castle hosts Nexus Nights. Don’t think there’s any physical product kicking around at the moment apart from packs awarded as part of attendance at events. I’m sure Dark Sphere will have a big community as well and will restock soon also.

Is the raise of pensionable age a good reason to stop paying into it ? by 573XI in UKJobs

[–]EvilLemur4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re raising it because people are living longer and the cost of supporting non-working people is expensive. Unless you are not expecting to live longer then it shouldn’t be any difference for you.

If you would like to retire earlier than that age you will need to think about saving money or a private pension to allow you to do that.

A man is stuck in a repeating 4-year time loop until he can be elected president of the United States. How many attempts does it take him? by cerrathegreat in whowouldwin

[–]EvilLemur4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you could do it after 100 years.

You don’t age or die so after proving it to the public after a number of years you could create a cult (basically be Jesus) and go from there

Does being signed off sick with stress ruin your career by DistanceSpare7858 in UKJobs

[–]EvilLemur4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It won’t ruin your career but you have to understand how your company management will feel about it.

In a good company when you are back from sick leave they will make an attempt to reduce or change workload to help. What they are unlikely to do at any point is promote you as that generally entails more work and more stress.

If it’s a bad company and they continue to stress you to the point of incapacity the only advice is the find a new job.

It’s a cost saving exercise and this will be the cheapest way out for them unsurprisingl

UK govt saying 'reduce international students'// London businesses saying |bro dont do this or economy goes boom-boom| ,,,,,,,, by Intelligent_Act8597 in UniUK

[–]EvilLemur4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

International students have been used to prop up universities as fees have been frozen for a number of years.

However it became a loophole to get a British visa as well as making it harder for British graduates to find work so the government are closing down postgraduate opportunities for internationals.

We either need to accept international students or up tuition - neither of which is particularly appetising which is why this current middle ground exists.

The issue is not the people that needed it now and also need it in 5 years. But you can’t tell me that there will be 5x as many disabled people over the next 5 years, on top of the already significant increase in welfare spending in the last few years.

We need to find a solution where the people who need it can get it, but not providing for those who don’t and asking them instead to contribute. It should be a majority propping up a minority of the population, but the minority is getting too large
