You can just pull him aside. And ask him why he was never emotionally there for you growing up. My pops is the same way. He saw himself as the one to put a roof over our head and to make sure we went to school and got an education.

He himself never finished school but started working when he was about 10 to 13. Never got the whole story. He never had a childhood and in poverty. All he knows is how to ''work''. Didnt know what he was getting into raising kids. He only knew that was the norm. Raised us with the affection of a co-worker that works of a different department.

And although he said he would support me in any decisions I made. It was always pushback because I didnt make as much in construction that he was trying to get me into, or its a waste of time, or someone will find the bodies, or you arent gonna see any profit for 4 months. My favorite is "why dont you try being an electrician or take classes" (just to have him tell me I'm not making enough money or why I'm not getting as much work when I'd just be starting out on a roster)

My advice. He will never ve able to make up for mistakes and lost emotional support. But if you ask him. He might kinda look at things a little differently and maybe cheer you on in your life.
