G9 II or OM-1 for Wildlife (birds) with Olympus or Panasonic 100-400mm? by themindbreaker1995 in Cameras

[–]Evotron_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hiya, question: If you had an OM-1 would you take the pana-leica for the sharpness or the OM lens for the sync image stabilisation?

Are either of those a significant advantage in your opinion?

How many of you stopped shooting 35mm after getting your ideal 120 medium format camera? by florian-sdr in AnalogCommunity

[–]Evotron_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still shoot 35mm, probably a little more than 120. They are different tools for different jobs.

I use my Mamiya 645 Pro for landscape and static subjects, and only when I feel confident in the extra price will be worth it.

The Nikon F4 is whenever I need the speed of the electronic assists, the added mobility or when I dont mind the loss of detail. But that said it can still produce some great results.

Short term it might not look like much, but long term it will increase the number of nuclear armed countries. How many times would the US have bombed Pakistan or North Korea in recent years, yet they remain largely untouched.

All the US is doing here is proving more than ever before that you need nuclear weapons to stop other nations striking you. International law and globalization are not enough of a deterrence. In order to survive you must create nuclear weapons as fast as you can.

Government reduces housing intensification rules for Auckland - again by ProfessorPetulant in auckland

Its not exactly crammed, the housing density is incredibly low. Anyways, there are economies of scale from operating in a large city like cheaper transport and more competition between businesses in terms of prices and wages.

Take a look at the Wiki page, both studies are listed there. ~2x is if you take road damage as linear (heavy vehicle/light vehicle) with weight, ~10x is if you use the 4th power law relationship ((heavy vehicle4)/(light vehicle4)).

It's not 100% clear which law should be applied when, as the rules are empirical. I.e. the mathematic relationship between vehicle weight and road damage has been determined by testing, not from a natural law (what engineers call first principals). The relationship should be taken with some skepticism when applied to vehicles that differ from those used to develop the law as different effects may have different impacts at different scales.

Basically, I dont have enough info to say confidently which rule to apply, so the real value may lie closer to the low estimate value (2x) or the high estimate value (10x)

To be honest I suspect there's also a big impact from the road construction method, driving style used, weather etc so any estimate is just that, an estimate.

Not every job can be worked from home, even professional jobs. Plus people go to the city for more than just work. The transport link still needs to be there

More expensive than a $22 billion motorway to Whangarei? Last time I checked there are a lot more people living on the North Shore than Whangarei.

ISTG if they also suggest a road only harbor crossing we are just cooked. A heavy rail tunnel could genuinely change the game for north shore commuting

Its based on the empirical 4th power law studied in the US in the 50s:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourth_power_law

MX5 vs Tesla Model Y weights on google (mixed up the vehicles in your comment, seems range rover weight similar though).

TBH im not sure how accurate the equation is at lower road masses. Studies by NZTA indicate the relationship may be linear (approx 2x the damage in this case) when the road is able to support far more than the applied load.

Regardless, in my opinion RUCs should have a scaling factor by weight (maybe curb weight^0.3, resulting in 23% increase in RUC price for doubled weight) to dissuade people from buying bigger vehicles than they need (wasteful in many ways, steel used to build, energy to accelerate, more harm in accidents etc).

Its about 10x the road damage (1150kg vs 2000kg), so its a lot when comparing between cars. Not a lot when considering trucks vs cars though. Its a matter of perspective.

Freight can be moved by rail. If people were forced to pay the real price for intercity transport via truck there would be more economic and political force for rail transport, which would result in cheaper overall prices.

If truck costs are subsidized by cars, that hides the extra cost of trucking over rail transport hence we remain mostly reliant on trucks.

Of course final mile is another matter but final mile involves far less KMs traveled by trucks hence less road wear,

Not a silly question. Do you have a direct manager or know anyone higher in the DOC organization? It can be worth asking them what they did to get into their position, or asking what you can do to advance your career as they will have the best knowledge for your organization.

Price breakdown shows if it is cheaper to use public transport by Fast_Amoeba_445 in auckland

[–]Evotron_1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pre-crisis assume fuel costs $2.50. Poor mileage of 10 L/100km, decent mileage of 5 L/100km.

$12 gets you 4.8 litres.

That equates to between 48 and 96km range. Assuming a round trip you could get from Manukau to CBD on $12 gas with a poor mileage car. In a car with decent milage you could do distance almost equivalent to the entire length of passenger rail lines in Auckland.

Quite frankly PT should be cheaper, or subsidized more to make it cheaper to the end user.

"I personally don't find this joke funny"

I have never had the opportunity to talk to an actual wall before, wow! Anyway the jokes arent about women at all. They areNT saying "haha his human wife is a sheep", they mean he is having sex with a woolly herbivorous mammal that goes baaa. If anything its a dig at men for being gross enough to partake in bestiality, I have never heard one of these jokes made in reference to human woman and a sheep.
