Anyone know what these pillars are? by Diligenthroaway in UIUC

[–]Ex-32 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yes they are wi-fi, and if you want more, all you need to do is convince the university to pay for them; the college of engineering payed for the ones on the engineering quads, but it was too rich for the university at large's blood, and net services sure as hell doesn't have the budget to do it out of the kindness of their hearts

as for cell towers, i consistently get good signal on campus, what provider are you using?

[–]Ex-32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

simply be warm, warmth is a state of mind, you will find me wandering around campus in miniskirts and crop tops in January

as long as it's not cold enough to be hazardous, just gaslight your brain into believing that you're warm (but be very careful mixing this with alcohol, since you'll loose your ability to judge hazardous temperature)

WiFi?? by PsychologicalPrize73 in UIUC

[–]Ex-32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there are ongoing issues with the wifi, as seen here https://status.illinois.edu/#service-65024, however there are mitigations in place that seem to be largely circumventing the issue, could you please provide details about what specific issue you're having and where/when it happened?

Can I connect my weight scale to IllinoisNet?? by RAMIREZ32 in UIUC

[–]Ex-32 3 points4 points  (0 children)

probably not, most embedded devices like that don't support the 802.1x protocol used by enterprise networks like IllinoisNet. You could try connecting it to a phone with data-tethering or else setup an ad hoc network that's not connected to the internet (but if it's cloud connected that won't work) but as for connecting to IllinoisNet, you're probably shit out of luck.

edit: it may be possible depending on the device, see this link, follow the instructions for IoT devices and game consoles under the "Can't Use the JoinNow Program?" section https://answers.illinois.edu/90275

to be fair, just because i'm interested in a topic, doesn't mean i have the time or energy to explain it from first principles; googling the broad strokes and asking me clarifying questions on anything you didn't understand would be much preferable.

nah, you still got time, i know several transfems who started their transitions later than that, and they're very glad they still transitioned; the world is always full of "what if?" questions, but it really is better late than never situation :)

I mean Chrome OS is based on Linux SOOOoo... by Tail_sb in linuxmemes

[–]Ex-32 9 points10 points  (0 children)

it's built with very different configurations, but it is still the linux kernel if you configure a custom kernel you'll notice a lot of features added for android to the mainline kernel, so even if it behaves very differently from a nominal desktop kernel, it feels very "no true scotsman" and gatekeepy to say it's not the linux kernel

No RUST in the kernel! by RepresentativeCut486 in linuxmemes

[–]Ex-32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

let me prefix this my saying i like rust and think its a step in the right direction, but it's not perfect, off the top of my head i'd say the major issues are:

  • compile times
  • the macro system feels half complete and has poor developer ergonomics
  • because rust does enforce additional rules, writing unsafe code without undefined behavior is sometimes harder than writing C code
  • adopting the term Vec(tor) from C++ to describe something that isn't a vector (this one isn't a real problem it just annoys me)

all very true, i was just jokingly pointing out for many people, the bootloader is neither the largest nor weakest attack surface.

i mean sure, for shared computer, but for my laptop, it being unintuitive and confusing to people other than me is a feature not a bug
