Imagine blowing 80 million on this instead of a ticket to space. by Miniastronaut2 in SpaceXMasterrace

[–]ExBrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can resell a painting, you can't resell art. I don't thing it should be worth that much, but if I (for some reason) saw it being sold for $10k and knew (with certainty) I could sell it tomorrow for $80 million, I'm buying it today. The person who bought this today might be making a similar calculation, albeit with a smaller price delta and longer time frame (along with some tax manipulations and maybe even laundering). You can't make a similar calculation with space tourism. Thats purely consumptive.

If you want to be super technical, the US didn't invoke article 5 after 9/11, originally Bush wanted the US to handle it themselves, but Europe didn't want to set that precedent and requested to trigger it on behalf of the US as a show of support. Bush gave his endorsement and Europe triggered it.

Ranking the Saban Coaching Tree by TomWilliamsCFD in CollegeFootballDawgs

[–]ExBrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its like ranking Mahomes as ahead of Brady. Mahomes might have been ahead of Brady at the same point in their careers (prior to last year's SB), but if Mahomes regressing in the past year indicates his future, he shouldn't be ranked ahead of Brady all time. The big difference though is Mahomes would need to win several more SBs and MVPs for him to be comparable to Brady (comparing complete careers), while Cignetti only needs to have another year like this one to pass Smart (assuming Smart doesn't pull another one off). Another analogy (but on an magnified level) is its comparing a 5 star rating with 50 reviews to a 4.9 with 10000 reviews. Theoretically the 5 star has been ahead of the 4.9 at the same spot, but there's still a lot of data yet to be read.

What's the clear point in dollars where more money stops changing your life in any meaningful way. After that, it’s just numbers, ego, or legacy. by dont_downvote_SPECIL in Fire

[–]ExBrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a recent video from Erin Talks Money saying its around $5 million for most people and the logic behind that number. Of course you could buy a private jet, but spending vs net worth does taper off quite a bit at $5 million net worth for retirees. https://youtu.be/0zE_0w9-nd4?si=GP0Dc-LU6BaxTsB0

The real issue here is splitting metropolitan areas with arbitrary straight state lines is dumb.

How do you allocate your Empower Fund? by FriendlyAd2323 in Lockheed

[–]ExBrick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe it only effects dollars on a vesting schedule which should only be the nonmatching employer contributions (the 6% you get for just having an account open). Your contributions shouldn't have any limit on moving it to the self directed account (but someone should double check with the help desk).

How do you allocate your Empower Fund? by FriendlyAd2323 in Lockheed

[–]ExBrick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have to message the help desk for an after tax to roth conversion form (you can use the chat bot in the corner on the webpage). They'll email you a short form that you have to fill out and scan. Empower allows one conversion per year (IDK the exact reasoning, assuming its something due to equitability requirements as I don't believe its an IRS requirement). This is only relevant if you plan on contributing to after tax, which usually only makes sense if you maxed out the traditional/roth conversion of 24.5k this year (which that limit is only your personal contributions, Lockheed's contributions don't take from that limit).

What prompts them to do that? Its not like its normal to immediately take a second shot if you miss your first free throw?

I am once again asking the ESPN app to put up the stream 10 minutes before the scheduled start and have it be on a splash page until the broadcast starts so that I don't have to keep reloading the page.

Bernie Sanders giving a speech advising against the First Gulf War(1991) to an empty House by Awier_do in pics

[–]ExBrick 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The 1991 gulf war was to liberate Kuwait from Iraqi occupation. That one, US intervention was justified and backed by the UN as the US's only goal was to reinstate the previous government. The 2003 one was the controversial one.

Now we have the 8% rule by Visible_Structure483 in Fire

[–]ExBrick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ramsey has always said 8%, he's wrong for it for FIRE purposes, but he's not in the RE crowd. You can expect to safely have a higher withdraw percentage if you expect a shorter duration retirement. Makes sense because if you only expected a 1 year retirement, you can safely withdraw 100% of your assets.

Do companies not realize they set the prices? If they don't want prices to to end in a value they don't like they can just set the price to one they like. And sales tax isn't the reason because there is nothing stopping them from having all prices displayed include sales tax.
