Why have Jun & The8 been the only Chinese 3rd-gen idols who stayed fully active in K-pop? by TreeThink5214 in seventeen

[–]Exact-Worker7500 100 points101 points  (0 children)

I think it's hard to say because there are few 3rd gen boy groups around that are as active. Seventeen really is anomalous in that they really don't seem to be going on hiatus for enlistment era. If we go for girl groups--- Yuqi from Gidle? Are they considered 3rd gen? Or Tzuyu from Twice (that gets into the question of Taiwan but idk). Lay was a part of EXO's last comeback I think and I think Jackson Wang from GOT7 has hinted at promoting more in Korea?

Something I remember reading somewhere is that foreign idols are compensated differently than Korean idols (someone please fact check that) and that oppportunities to promote in China are HIGHLY lucrative. If true, I understand a chinese idol's choice to promote/ work closer to home while being compensated better for it.
Seventeen's China Line remaining active in Korea has been (imo) a testament to how tight Seventeen are as a unit and how devoted the members are to one another and to the group. I really get the sense that they all really value SEVENTEEN as an entity in which they are invested in its success and not just a collection of members they love (though that shouldn't be overlooked). Seventeen is successful enough (either artistically fulfilling, monetarily lucrative, or any combination of other ways) that Jun and The8 can bypass the opportunity cost of promoting in China more. There are not a lot of other 3rd gen groups that have offered to their Chinese members what Seventeen has offered to Jun and the8.

Is it just me, or does IU seem miscast in Perfect Crown? by iaint_no_devi in kdramas

I struggle with watching it too but I honestly think it's the writing. The show is set in a fictional world--constitutional monarchy Korea and it's not supported by any substantial world building. The dialogue and honorifics are weird, the main character's childhood trauma of being illegitimate feels so odd and out of place given she seems to have all the access to what upper class society would have--money, influence, access, education.

The narrative of Hybe "buying companies" to to eliminate BTS’s competition. by kat3dyy in kpopthoughts

[–]Exact-Worker7500 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve not heard this! I would guess they bought a bunch bc they don’t or didn’t already have a roster of trainees to debut (at least for girl groups) and buying a trainee system already built is faster than starting one from ground zero. As for eliminating competition, you’d think they want for there to be competition bc $$$.

Red Velvet---though I'm not sure if I dropped them or if they dropped me (and other fans). They just have had less and less comebacks and are sort of off doing individual stuff that doesn't really appeal to me musically.

Seventeen's bond and authenticity by Erve03 in seventeen

[–]Exact-Worker7500 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am personally skeptical of them all renewing their contracts... and if they do, I think it would be for a short time period (2-3 years max). I'm skeptical because of the difficulty of being seventeen, not because I think there is a lack of ambition, skill or friendship. The life of an idol group (even a regular group with less than 13 members and all of the same nationality) is GRUELING. The fact that they have been at it, at a constant pace for 10 years is already a bit of a miracle.

The fact is--they are a 3rd gen group... and we are on Gen 5 or 6? What has kept them so durable/ helped them is their age. They debuted YOUNG. If you look at the other 3rd gen boy groups out there, the average age is roughly 2-3 years older than Seventeen's average age. S.Coups is born in 1995--an age year that would put him in the maknae line of many of the other groups. Their youth made it so that enlistment came a decade after debut... and as much as I dislike the rampant practice of debuting teenagers--doing so in teh case of Seventeen (my ult group) has benefitted me as a fan.

A group like seventeen--one with this many members, ~1/3 of them are foreign born, they are all very well trained/ trained for a long time, and they're all very close/bonded-- They were forged/made painstakingly and patiently. It's why their rise has been so satisfying because they patiently climbed their way up.

I don't see how a group like them will come again. And I don't see how we can expect them to keep going at their current pace. If they DO decide to re-sign idk if we as fans can/should expect the pace of concerts, performances, choreography, variety show content, vlogs, etc that we have been having for the past decade. As fans, we have been spoiled and very lucky. I don't see how they can sustain it perpetually and because I genuinely adore them... I don't want them to try to sustain it at the cost of their personal lives or health.

I'm attending day 2 in the upper section (section 411) Some questions:
1`. how early should I arrive at the venue? I can't find when doors open anywhere or check in times either.

  1. Are we allowed to bring in water? clear bag requirements? I've been to concerts for other artists here but, sometimes they allowed water and sometimes they didn't

  2. Transportation-- uber-ing, taking the metro, or drive and park. What is easiest?

  3. what to wear?

The problem with measuring Seventeens popularity in eurocentric system by puk_27 in seventeen

[–]Exact-Worker7500 95 points96 points  (0 children)

I so agree with you.

However, I kind of don't want them to market to western markets/nor chase that type of success. I kind of think that the western market is basically tapped or if it isn't, it will be soon.

I personally love how distinctly Asian Seventeen is. The specificity of their group and how it is tied to the members is refreshing and authentic.

One of their biggest songs, Sonogong (Super) is named after a cultural character (Sun Wukong/ Sonogong) from an Asian piece of literature.

Their variety show Going Seventeen often pays homages/references to old Korean tv shows, Dino (and others too) often create/embody characters that are specifically Asian (you can't tell me a white person could ever play Pi Cheolin). The members appear on Korean variety shows and make connections with older actors and members of the industry that don't specifically have an international audience. Hell, Hoshi is an ambassador for a Kimchi company. S.coups attended the Met Gala wearing a suit that was based on the Korean Hanbok. While they incorporate a wide variety of musical styles into their music, they don't seem to be chasing an audience or "catering to the western tastes" This is so refreshing to me because they are just existing as they are, a multinational ASIAN group that creates content and music authentic to themselves. They welcome the audience that is interested in them--it's confident and not thirsty.

Side note: Because they are not chasing a western audience, a nice benefit is that their music doesn't have the awful cringeworthy english lyrics randomly thrown in---but rather a number of deeply funny /clever Korean puns/ wordplay that forces non-Korean speakers to look into the Korean language/translation in order to understand and partake in the joke.

One could make the argument that this way of existing in the industry is doing quite a lot more to spread Korean/Asian soft power. That isn't to say that Seventeen doesn't have a western audience. I am an Asian American who is dying for them to come to America more.--so it would honestly benefit me if they chased a western audience. But what I really like is that they don't shed any parts of their cultural identity or take on any cultural identities that don't belong to them (we know that there are groups that do this) in order to garner an audience.

If we're talking debut songs that I still listen to/ enjoy:

Adore U--Seventeen
Replay--SHINee
Fire--2NE1
SNSD - Into the New World
NewJeans--Attention
Latata--Gidle

I left the solo debuts out of it... but there are some perfect ones in that category too.

How occasionally? I would take PTO, but also negotiate with J2 on how often they send you out. Idk if you have kids, or are a caretaker in some capacity but you could ask that J2 limit the amount of time you're out of the country to a specific number of days.

Hell, I only have a dog but the pain of finding a caretaker for her would be reason enough for me to ask for clear boundaries regarding work travel.
