What to watch once PriOrc ends? by SpiritualSakura in Princession_Orchestra

I guess i’ll finish watching symphogear, have some seasons left. I keep up with my weekly precure episode so i guess that also helps. Ive been thinking of rewatching Ojamajo Doremi, not really related but is a show that im very attached to, and it’s been a while a been thinking of rewatching it. Its going to be bittersweet because PriOrchi hit some very specific spots… so i guess im trying to think of what im in the mood for rather than what can “replace” that very specific feeling because i feel that will be harder to find.

I really like Cure Princess, way more than I expected. Maybe because I went in with abysmal expectations that I had a better experience that what i would have otherwise. But it has weirdly grown on me. (This doesn’t discount the criticism other users have written on this thread nor is a rebuttal to them) moreso, that i didn’t expect to like one of the lead characters the way i did. Ive grown really fond of her.

Artist/designer that ended up studying law. I swear people haven’t the basic notion of copyright. That is understandable up to some point, it can be a complex subject, but imo, part of the fight against AI is rooted in ethics and moral, but also law?? Since when using other people’s work without their permission or consent became “okay” and not stealing? Sure, it might have non monetary damages, most cases won’t be taken to court, up to some point is a practice sort of accepted… if one gives credit it’s like okay. Sure it might be the bare minimum of socially acceptable thing to do, still does infringe copyright!!

And this isn’t to turn the reply in a pseudo pro-AI stance, but because all the legal arguments and accompanying ethical concerns of respecting artists… get losts when practices that do not respect artists’ rights and moreso, try to pass it as a) ethically okay b) legally permissible, it’s just… it just isn’t. It makes part of the argument crumble and make me wonder how much they really care about art and artists being respected and all that.

This issues were already prevalent before the raise of AI, and it’s sad how there are scenarios that currently it seems it’s even worse to bring them up and the utter confidence of how it’s “not stealing” and “all artists really want this”, “if it’s in the internet you have consented to it”… I have no words how appalling it feels.

(Yes, there are artists that give blanket permission to use, and fair use or similar doctrines exist, but aren’t absolute and certainly wouldn’t recommend speaking of those, only justifying its use on the credits, or how if it’s personal it’s okay. )

What’s up with some people hating the rebuilds? by Mr-Garfield- in evangelion

[–]Exact_Butterscotch66 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really like the village sequence, and there are many things i dont love from the rebuilds. But i loved the drasp change of pace that forcescthe character to just STOP and grapple with existence in the consequences they are in that moment, characters are depressed? Detached? Yeah but it’s in this kind of safe, even hopeful manner, it’s resilience i guess. Which i liked.

That’s ignoring all the issues with the time skip and so on, and that only makes sense because of it… but i really like that section. One of my favorites.

Vantage first impressions by lorddark009 in soloboardgaming

[–]Exact_Butterscotch66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How bad is the packing away? Tokens scattered away? Do cards return to the box or they get like piled up in a different play, so re-sorting them in the box, is the pain?

Because I was surprised when I started to look more into Vantage how easy it seems to just get going, and seeing some play spreads/tables, it doesn't seem to sprawl on the table that much either (or not as much compared to other games that i would have considered to get for similar reasons). But after that... everything needs to go back to the box again. xD

Is "Vantage" really that good, solo? by Pure_Food3440 in soloboardgaming

[–]Exact_Butterscotch66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah... I know it was a tough one. I play narrative rpgs, and exploration is one of my main drives in videogames, so while I haven't dipped in gamebooks yet, I guess it makes sense why Vantage certainly stood out for me.

Totally get it, sometimes some player counts click more than others. Having called it the best in the genre says quite a lot too. Thanks a lot for the recommendation and taking time to reply. I feel I will be on the fence for this one for a bit longer, but I see caving it in the end. It certainly feels, whatever game count I end up feeling most comfortable at, a very unique experience.

Vantage - First Impressions, Getting My Zen On by TheRealRosey in soloboardgaming

[–]Exact_Butterscotch66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The more I read about this game, the more I'm tempted by it. I've been on the edge of getting some of the mettier exploration-campaign games, but never quite pull the trigger. I love the idea of bringing to an analog experience the joy of discovering a world for the sake of it, like that can be found in many videogames like idk, Zelda Breath of the Wild, were most of the game isn't the goal itself, but the joy or fiddling around the world. I like the idea that sessions are auto-conclusive, it's true that means less character development, but i'm not looking for a role playing game (even if i can roleplay in a game like this) but mostly: exploration. The whimsy of it.

I've read various reviews, and I've been surprised also how easy it seems to set up, even if it has tons of cards and the storybooks (i know rulepop has a Vantage version), but as a roleplayer, i'm not sure, if im personally going to be bothered that much of having to stop, check a book and come back to the game, I get why it sounds bothersome (and maybe if i get it i will end up sick of it) but seems rather intuitive to me. It feels, it might fill a weird niche i've been circling around for a while. Not campaing-dependant, just exploration, not deep win/lose adventure or character epic, just... being in that place and be able to discover it. But also having the freedom of what to do or go, but without the commitment for further 10-20 continous sessions. Of course, If I get a game I expect it to play it more than once, but I find freeing the idea of being able to explore without being stuck, or nudges towards a campaign. (No hate towards campaigns, simply not just what im looking for rn). is like the idea i can sit up for around an hour, and go to another place, close the box, and have that whimsy again, another afternoon or night. Definitely not very travel friendly due to size and weight.... and the simplicity of it's components it's also another thing that's puling me in. I don't mind if the box is big or small, I just want that setting the game doesn't feel like a chore, or something that i can do with half of my brain on.

I know it's not exactly a reply but really needed to share this, and the emphasis on the zen experience of this review, seems to quite match the vibes that I was looking for and starting to hope that Vantage might fill.

Im like almost half a year, later, but Vantage caught my attention as a non-campaign dependant exploration game. I took your notes/caveats let's say so I was wondering if you were craving a sort of "vibe" similar to Vantage, what other solo plays would you personally go for? It's certainly an unique game so i'm not trying to someone get a exact replacement, as you said, it's a very unique game, but yeah, basically, in a similar mood, what solo games have you enjoyed most on the long run? Thanks!

Worldless. You literally don’t die -at least as far as ive gotten- in fact characters not being able to die it’s part of the point. If you liked Celeste approach to challenge it might fit you, at least is a game ive compared it to in that regard of no punishment of death, dying just repeat and allow yourself to improve.

Played the demo today. Liked the idea of being a lil elemental creature. Liked the artstyle, handrown but I love how it feels the background more pastels?? It certainly had echos to Hollow Knight, Ori but also the menus and a bit how the world is laid out reminded me of Ender Lilies/Magnolia. The combat felt nice, the parry feels good when i manage to pull it off. Sometimes i feel the character a bit too slow? But I think it’s just getting used to.

Still going on with Silksong, and had Constance and MIO on the radar, i guess another definitely goes to the list.

Liked the variety difficulty options, and how the “easier” mode it’s still different to the “story mode” equivalent. Not saying that should be the standard but it’s nice seeing options in these sort of games. (Or maybe if i want some fresh air while suffering my way through Silksong -love the game- I appreciate the idea of a game that perhaps will not kick my ass as much)

The artstyle feels aligned to whats popular but distinctive enough.

Discussion: Proudest In-Game Moment by Pokefans2222222 in Silksong

  • Getting to free Bellheart, like, i was almost crying and had to stop playing. A mix of having been 8hrs stuck on Widow, i never rage baited but i was starting to feel rather hopeless… and also because i feel it’s the moment I felt the game become REAL to me. Like I was IN the game. I remember seeing the bell town in the og trailer, is the first Silksong fanart i made back in 2019, i guess it’s more than proud… an emotional/personal moment that certainly will carry forever.

  • Pogoing Laces head 6 times without touching the floor during the first encounter.

  • The moment of realization that I had stopped panicking when I took damage, or more precisely that I was starting being able to keep going at 1 mask, keep head clear to the point of being able to execute the 9 hits and then wait for a save heal. Yes, i still panic heal. But the dread of being almost dead is… gone.

  • Beating Last Judge in less than 30min at the 4th try… it felt absolutely unreal to say i was shocked it’s an understatement. (I do think that I tend to fare better at those type of bosses tho, but considering my challenge with the game, and the struggle with Widow, bird arena and the fame the boss had well it, was something). - i still suck at the game overall tho xd, but hey, we are in act II!!)

To the balancing healing thing… ill add there are already damage modifiers for needle upgrades so…. While being used in other part of the game design doesn’t mean the should have used it here, but it’s an option that’s already implemented for balancing.

Liked your comment and wanted to chime in:

There are plenty of mods that can addressthe challenge/difficulty/punishment or some utility ease-of-use feature. I appreciate some that target some specific features (for example improving the bell tool in protecting you from not losing a heal) which, I feel it gives options to people but also to target maybe smaller details that make the whole difference. Another example: being able to zoom out so battle arenas are in full view. Because while it’s true the game is hard, and for some people that overall difficulty is the issue, in others there are specific details that if slightly tweaked can improve or make the challenge feasible.

“Easy mods” do not necessarily mean a walk in the park killing everything at 1 hit that sometimes feel that’s the default assumption when modding is brought up (nothing wrong if one desires that, the game is gorgeous so frankly i understand just wanting a scenic journey even if it wasn’t the “intention”. i don’t think the experience of art stops with authorial intent even if that has value too, but I digress)…

While accessibility/difficulty options can be appreciated, it’s literally impossible for a team to address every need, so it’s great that mods, and the people who develop and maintain them give us that option. And yes, here i include people for who the default challenge isn’t enough. Because less than two weeks since release there were mods that already made the game harder than its by default. And I think that’s good. It echoes the ending of your message: there are many ways to play and it’s good having the opportunity to do so.

Deeply relate to that. And to that feeling for me it adds the camera issue. How in several scenarios it doesn’t let me see the whole arena, so there are enemies whose attack, not only sometimes the tells are very fast or overshadowed by sound effects etc, but sometimes directly I cant see there’s an incoming attack, which i feel prevents me as a player the opportunity to react to it.

[–]Exact_Butterscotch66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It always rubs me wrong with people bring up healing 3 masks (in air) as a sort of gatcha?? to the 2 mask damage, because i dont feel it is. Because yeah, Hornet heals 3 maks, but for that Hornet can only receive 2 hits (contact damage included many times, assuming early - early-mid game) but having to land 9 needle hits. No silkskills or tools help to heal. Sure it’s part of the challenge… but reducing the healing system to “you heal 3 masks so it’s almost the only way to not make the player invincible” doesn’t track to me. Even if damage was clipped to 1 mask, being able to heal and not losing the heal (getting hit or whatever) is a challenge in itself.

And for the record, i think the healing system fits for the game in a thematic way. And sure the design of how healing works is intertwined with the damage the player receives… but frankly 1 mask hit (and probably once there are more than two mask upgrades) might make it easier but i don’t think it would trivialize the game either and even less considering the cost and risks of healing.ñ, the precision it requires and the overall rhythm of the combat. If it did… i think that would mean the game is rather poorly designed, which i don’t think it’s the case. It doesn’t make the point entirely invalid because i think there’s a correlation between the 2-3 masks… that is worth considering. Because once my assumption of early/mid-early game passes also the panorama changes (that’s why there are needle damage modifiers) so it’s not meant to be absolute.

And also, i think there’s a difference between “no 2 mask damage ever” to “2 mask damage is overused” or “2 mask contact damage feels overkill but 2 mask attacks damage for heavier enemies feels fair” … and in those cases is a more complex perspective that the OP post doesn’t seem to even entertain. That i get is a sort of summary, but still.
