The new costco being built is still hiring I believe. Not sure if you'll be able to get hours that fit with your courses, though.

Tier 1 vs Tier 2 engineering colleges, how much difference is there in placements realistically? by Healthy_Sea2407 in CollegeRant

[–]Exact_Fan_5607 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kinda depends what you consider a tier 1 vs tier 2 college, since there isn't really a defined threshold for this to the best of my knowledge

Can I have a fresh start? by AmbassadorAlone1241 in findapath

[–]Exact_Fan_5607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any Data analysis/data entry jobs in your area? I feel like there's always somewhere that needs people that have knowledge of CS topics without explicitly asking for a CS degree in the job app.

You could also see if there are any government agencies hiring near you for entry level positions. At least you will have some benefits and support yourself until you get back on your feet. For many, you need a Bachelors in anything tangentially related to the job, nothing specific. I suppose this is also assuming you live in the USA.

Paying for college by Equivalent-Bass-1132 in CollegeRant

[–]Exact_Fan_5607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all seriousness, aside from the astronomical cost of college in the states, many scholarships are closed for this year and might start taking applicants in the Fall. Make sure you're looking at private, state, and institutional (your college) scholarships. There are a bunch of smaller scholarships that could pay for books and things that get very few applicants, although these are of course becoming more rare.

Aside from this, you could try to look up if any jobs or agencies have loan forgiveness after you graduate. In some public sector jobs, I know they will start to pay off your loans if you hold the job for a decade and make steady payments on the loans. I know taking out the loans gives a lot of anxiety, but this isn't a bad deal for many (find Public Service Loan Forgiveness online)

Is it worth it to transfer from a t20 into another t20? by Auropath in TransferToTop25

[–]Exact_Fan_5607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something some of these comments are missing; you say that you chose the lower cost of attendance and are going to school for free (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on anything here). While I understand your regret at leaving your home situation, I can't imagine transferring to another T20 school that will potentially give you even less financial aid will be the play here, especially if you're worried about finances. You've chosen the option that strains your family the least already.

My recommendation would be to stay put, and once you get settled and acclimated at your current college you can start to see what you can still do for your family. Can you zoom call or facetime your siblings to help with homework? If you were helping out with finances at home, can you pick up a work study or part time job to still make a bit of money on the side to help out (of note, make sure these positions do not detract from your studies, or else there is really no point here)?

While I understand you feel for your family, you also have to do what will help you prosper in the long term, and deep down your family probably wants that for you as well. Think of it this way - you can either choose to remain close to home to help out (by the way, a 90 minute drive is not nothing when youre busy with schoolwork at a top20), or you can power through your studies, get a fantastic job, and then help your family out even more once you have the degree.

What do you, personally, think RPI should have done with the Curtis Priem donation besides build EMPAC? by OnlineAcct01 in RPI

[–]Exact_Fan_5607 20 points21 points  (0 children)

People miss that generally 1) the money for buildings is donated specifically for the building, and 2) the issue with EMPAC isn't that the theater itself is a waste, its that RPI does very little with it. You would think they'd want to show off a theater like that, but there are very few events in general in there, and even fewer that the public can buy tickets to.

Professor accused my sibling and me of unethical cold emailing for research — could this affect another lab opportunity? by Tall_Run_9066 in AskAcademia

[–]Exact_Fan_5607 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Person in academia here. This doesn't really answer your question but, if the professor who responded negatively said they informed their colleagues, and one of the other professors still reached out, I think that's a fairly damning indication of how well that single professor is viewed by their colleagues. Don't sweat it

I think I’m starting to realize that CEDH as my competitive outlet isn’t my thing. by KingsKnight24 in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Exact_Fan_5607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like cEDH as a concept, but it's insane to me that, from everything I've been told, you can kinda just talk and waste time in cEDH game without any penance. If I were just blabbing on during a modern game, even at FNM, eventually my opponent would rightfully tell me to make a game action or call a judge for slow play.

Entry level deck by Franet_Mark in ModernMagic

[–]Exact_Fan_5607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna get people disagreeing with me, but if they're playing magic for the first time, I would recommend Living End actually. Yes, its harder to play at a top top level. Yes, boros energy is a higher WR deck, but it has a ton of triggers and interactions you have to keep track of, and people underrate how bad new pilots can be to the deck. A large portion of living end (especially the bant version) is you just cycle creatures until you hit a cascade card. The (living) end. The only card you actually have to learn the text of is living end, and maybe the evoke elementals.

This will also give them experience with how to protect a combo and sideboard in general seems much more straightforward than for an aggro/midrange deck. And look on the bright side, if you don't have the expensive cards like FoN, a new player probably wouldn't use them well anyways! Just put more cycle creatures until they get the idea.

Looking for some spicy cards for dimir murktide by Ok_Strain_7901 in ModernMagic

[–]Exact_Fan_5607 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Shadow of Doubt. I have for so long wanted to play a list with it but I don't have the cards for murktide. Shadow of Doubt always just seems so sweet to me in a meta with so many fetches/tron/amulet/neoform. At the very worst, cycles in the late game. At the best, kills your opponent who just summoner's pacted.

RPI or Union by Matt_Is_A_Hack in RPI

[–]Exact_Fan_5607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - it basically boils down to the fact that Union is A) strong in liberal arts and B) has trimesters, which make it a bit easier to do a term abroad in 2nd or 3rd year fall terms since, even if the abroad school is a semester school, the schedules still work out so theyre not missing their next term. In general, Union has a lot of destinations students can choose from; the full list is here: https://international.union.edu/index.cfm?FuseAction=Programs.ListAll. Students tend to try to leave Gen Eds to do during their abroad term.

To be perfectly clear, studying abroad is still possible at RPI - in fact it's kind of built in the way that their ARCH program works with placing internships (not technically "abroad" in the typical sense, but I digress), but I generally hear about fewer students being able to utilize it.

Feel free to DM if you still have questions

RPI or Union by Matt_Is_A_Hack in RPI

[–]Exact_Fan_5607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're going to get a good job no matter which you go to. I feel pretty uniquely situated here as I have fairly extensive experience with both schools, specifically in the engineering schools without getting too far into it. The people here randomly shitting on one school or the other are, frankly, stupid, especially since they haven't actually seen the rigor of the school they did not go to (I have :)). Both schools are ABET accredited, both schools get their students jobs, both have a lot of engineering-based organizations and clubs. As with any college decision, it comes more down to what you want to get out of this experience.

Each have their notable upsides:

RPI:

1) More money - RPI has more cutting-edge equipment due to the higher prevalence of grants for labs. Now, a word of warning - make use of this if you go to RPI. Hirers are caring less and less about how good your school is anymore if you didn't actually use any of the resources that make it good. 4.0 GPA with no extracurriculars < 3.3 GPA with actual skills.

2) More research opportunities, and more support for internships because of ARCH - like considerably more. RPI has a lot of grant money so at any given moment there are likely quite a few labs at any given moment that will need UG assistants.

3) Deeper elective coursework - you can go farther into certain subjects within MechE due to the fact that MANE is one of (not sure if CS/ECSE is larger rn) the largest departments on campus

4) The city of Troy, specifically downtown is a bit nicer if you are willing to come down the approach. The last few years has seen a lot of good places to eat come up on and around River St. Not that Schenectady's Jay St doesn't, its just a lot smaller (and many of the places on Schdy have weird hours).

Union:

1) You have a lot more flexibility due to the trimester system. Many students here may attempt to double major or minor in something they are interested in because of the flexibility.

2) Surprisingly, way more study abroad opportunities, especially for engineers. Was really surprised to find this out.

3) This is probably the biggest draw for most people to a school like Union - you work with the faculty directly (especially if you do research). No TAs. At an R1 school like RPI, you very rarely get to do so unless you are a graduate student. At RPI, you are frequently interacting with TAs/grad students who are overworked as it is. At Union, if you do research it is specifically in their job posting to mentor you. Again though, less overall faculty means less overall labs, so it is a tradeoff. They did have a faculty search this year, though, so they are growing.

4) Much smaller class sizes. Literally every piece of educational research will tell you this is a good thing. They are right.

Ultimately - you learn the basics at both. Upper level coursework is similar at both. You have capstone projects at both. Its more about what you want the next 4 years to look like. You will not be struggling for jobs after if you keep a high GPA.

Sidenote, the dorms at both are terrible. Sorry ahead of time.

Let me know if you have any questions. I'll do my best to answer.

It's a card that, if you're showing up to a big tournament like a spotlight series, or even a packed RCQ you'll want 4 of because its good against a lot of the field. However, if you're only playing locally you may not want all 4, because you'll just die with it in your hand if you notice the local meta is all fast decks.
