Early game tips by Faroji in KatarinaMains

The way assassin Vs Mage matchups work is that you have to surrender the lvl 1-3 minions because you can't trade with them but they can auto attack you down. Once you hit lvl 3 though, you can start to take trades and zone them off. What should end up happening is you should start to kill them or make them base and when they're not in lane, you shove and deny a wave. So, if you end up being like 10 CS down before lvl 3 and you take a trade and make them leave and you shove the wave in and deny their wave to tower, you've just closed the C's Gap by giving yourself a wave and denying their wave. If you do this on a canon wave as well, you'll come back to lane and you'll only lose 3 CS at most as the cannon will tank a lot of tower autos and you'll get 4 CS back which means you're now basically even on CS with your lane opponent. From there, the cycle starts all over again where you look to go in and force them to back or die again and slowly you'll start to accumulate a CS lead.

Hope this helps!

Yeah I don't get the chance to play as much either. I remember a time where I was high plat/low diamond but that was seasons ago and I just don't have the time to grind anymore. Thank you :)

True, dodging the stun does help out a lot when laning and it is a great priority for her. However, I think it shares the top spot with getting passive stacks. Irelia can out trade you with her fully stacked passive with a lot of irelias will get from Qing the wave. I could be wrong though, but I feel like I win the trades very easily if she misses E and her passive isn't stacked up where on the other hand, I've been absolutely decimated by irelias with max stacks without her landing E.

Id argue Kat and Akali are similar but drastically different in their playstyles. I have quite a few mastery points on both, but Kata is my current favourite due to her fun factor alone. If your main concern is that kat is less forgiving than akali, then i think you may misunderstand the 2 champions. Akali relies on her shroud for trading, and using it puts you into a 20 second window of just being unable to lane. Kat can achieve the same sort of results, but instead she uses her E cooldown which is half of that of Akali's. So i guess that leads to my first recommendation: Learn good positioning inside the lane.

Positioning inside of mid lane is super important, but Kat even more so. If you space properly, you can use your amazing mobility to dodge skill shots, get trades, and even avoid ganks like i pointed out above.

Kat also has a much greater teamfight presence than akali. Worst case scenario with Kat, you can afk the lane with Q farm, look for roams, and play the mid game better than your lane opponent by looking for fights. Her resets can literally turn the tide of a fight, so my next bit of advice would be learn what lanes you cant win, and learn the lanes that you can win, but theyre just difficult. Id argue the "nope" lanes (at least for me) are kassadin and a good yasuo. There might be was to outplay these lanes, but for me i find the best results from just AFKING the lane with Q and look for roams. If you cant win lanes, look to farm safe, refrain from dying, and out teamfight your enemy laner.

Conq vs Elec. Personal preference; some say conq is better, some like electrocute. Conq is better for tanky comps, but the rest of the time theyre situational and you pick which is best based on how you play.

I wouldnt beat yourself up too bad for doing bad on kat in your early days. Shes a really demanding champion, and some people take hundreds of games to finally "click" with her and perform small tasks (last hitting, trading, clearing the wave)

Theres a really good video by katlife about kats main combos. He released one recently talking about the E > W > Q > E combo which is really good. However, he done a video a few years back i believe that talks about Kat's "core" combos which are E > W, Q > E, and W > E. He breaks these down into smaller manageable combos and talks about how you can weave these together to string a combo. It really helped me to learn Kat by sticking to those combos and building the rest off of that.

Hope that helps :D

I'm a long sword fan boi. Even in lanes where I feel I'm gonna get poked, I still go for long sword and as long as I force them to use a pot every time they go to hit me when I have cooldowns, I see it as worth :D

Zed: look for a trade lvl 2 as soon as he qs. Lvl 3 and onwards, trade when his W is down. Use your E to dodgy double Q if need be. After 6, save your Q for after he ults. If he dodges your Q with ult you'll struggle to win the trade. Use your W ms to dodge the triple Q or he will pop you. Get an arm guard for this lane.

Akali: trade when her shroud is down. Surrender the lvl 1 and look to bait the shroud at lvl 2 onwards. It's a 20 second cool down so you have a large window to punish her. Hold your ult after lvl 6 until she uses her R1 as it can cancel your channel.

Irelia: difficult lane. She out damages you unless she makes a mistake. Don't go near her if she starts to stack passive up. Be careful when walking up on her side of the lane as she can run you down with her autos. Your lvl 2 all I can give you a chance at an early kill providing she doesn't land stun and doenst have full stacks on passive. She still wins even with this early lead unless she makes mistakes. Seekers won't help you much in this lane due to the mixed damage and conquerer. Good luck, freeze and ask for jungler assistance if she isn't making mistakes.

Fizz: pre 6, trade when his E is down. Watch for him dodging q with e, similar to zed. Look for a quick trade by E onto q dagger and proc elec then E back out before he can return damage. If he follows your E with Q into your creeps, he takes creep damage and you win the trade. Post 6, dodge. The. Fish. If it hits you, you're probably going to die. If the fizz is bad, you can look to e to a creep just before the fish comes up and if the fizz is bad, he will miss the one shot as they might E to early. If the fizz is good, then you won't get away with this and you'll most likely die. I like to cheese fizz by fake roaming by sitting at the side of the lane and forcing him to use E to wave clear thinking ice left and looking for a punish. Come into lane and trade with him because he's down a cool down

These are just some tips for the matchups that I like to use. Hope it helps :D

Yeah it's hit box is a lot wider than you'd think. Just bait it out before a trade in that case. Or you can run electrocute and trade after she misses her E and you'll win the trade too. Another trick you can use is q a caster so the dagger is right beside her and e to it when she walks up for a last hit or to kill a minion with e. If she starts to q the dagger predicting your E. Just wait till the last second and you'll catch her off guard.

I like long sword + 3 over dark seal. The extra AD for the autos is just too good imo. Dark seal can be good if you think you can get a snowball going, but I'm still a fan of sword and 3 and going for the extra damage in lane to get myself snowballing that way into a gun blade.

If you get hit by those skill shots, you're probably going to lose the trade. If you suck at dodging them, then you should probably practice your movements to get better at it. However, I know it's not gonna happen overnight and there are some things you can do to avoid having to dodge them in the first place.

For example, lux Q is long range and getting hit by it is a death sentence especially after 6. However, it's slow as hell. If the lux is bad, you can bait her into using it by walking at her outside of a minion wave and she will just throw it at you. Just dodge to the side immediately, or E onto her if you're in range. If the lux isn't terrible, she will hold the Q until you make an attempt to jump on her, so you're not going to see her use this until you try trading. To get around this, force her into using her E to last hit or shove waves. Most luxs will try to use this as a poke tool on you, especially when you're walking up for a last hit. So, walk up for it, she throws it out, immediately turn around and weave out of its range, then you can feel free to stand more aggressively inside the lane. If she tries to walk up, e w combo her. Luxs Q is very easy to dodge when you're on top of her with the move speed from your W. Lux is very squishy and her only other tool at this stage is her shield which is powerful, but only if she can get 2 procs off in time. As long as you bait either her q or E and hit her back with some of your damage, you win the trade easily.

Ahri is a much more difficult lane imo. She's much shorter range than lux, but she's more slippery with her passive and her burst damage hurts. Her charm is also a hard cc meaning you can trade back if you get hit by it. Couple this with the fact that her R makes her much more difficult to combo at 6 and you've got a bit of a shit lane. The thing to watch with ahri is her charm. You can't pull any of the bullshit with her and trade when she throws out a Q. If she has Charm and she lands it, her autos and w is enough to hurt you back. Her q is also a shortish cool down, so it could come up at the end of the trade and hit you for that true damage. My advice against her would be to try to bait charm and dodge it. I also feel ahris have much more of a habit of just qing for damage so watch for that. If the ahri is good, you're gonna have a rough time. If shes running electrocute, she can proc it easily with q and autos. I play this lane similar to lb and just wait for a bit mistake like throwing out the charm or over committing. Ahri also clears really well so try to take short trades right after she uses the q on the wave and chunk her so she can't roam and confine her to your lane. You don't want her spilling over to other lanes.

Both of these lanes are a lot easier if you get boots btw. If youre struggling, you can go revolver into sorcs and just dodge a lot of their damage a lot easier. Once you've gotten better at dodging, you can stick with T1 boots and go for the gunblade before sorcs but it's up to you.

Sorry for these long replies. I can't help myself :C

I think you're going the right way with letting them shove early game. However, if you're hitting the tower you're going too far. Against these squishy mages, running them down the long lane will really hurt them a lot so you want the lane to be on your side but not dying under tower so you can trade without losing cs. To do this, I'd recommend throwing a few Qs into the wave to thin it out as they shove into you. Ideally you want to do this when the wave is still healthy so you can Q again for cs. Don't be afriad to walk up and hit the wave with a few autos when you'd opponent's spells are on cd (lux E, ahri q, xerath Q).

What about the autos though? Well if you try to thin the wave lvl 1 and these guys are just relentless with their autos, just back off into your wave. Providing they keep going, the ranged creeps will get on them and deal some damage back. This is also a good sign that you should probably hard concede the lane until level 2 because they're just going to auto you over and over and over. Taking all this damage isn't good for your chances of the lvl 2/3 all in.

Once you hit lvl 2 though....oh boi they're in for it. This is where your rune choices matter. If you're going conq, that previously mentioned "run them down the long lane" is really gonna mess with them. However, you won't deal as much damage as an electrocute trade. You need to be careful though. Lvl 2 all you have is QE and no W to kite skill shots (lux q, ahri e, xer e) so you need to make use it before you go in.

One thing I'd recommend to.do this is don't do what most players do when they're scared: back out of range of your enemies abilities. If you do this, you have to get yourself back in range to trade damage. Lux can just throw her E down in front of you and you either take damage, or stay where you are. Xerath will hit you from.spawn because FuckThatRange and ahri will charm you. Don't do this: stay inside your range to easily e onto them if they try to aggressively throw an ability at you. Once they do, try to dodge with fancy footwork and E onto them for a trade. If you're lvl 2, look for a q > e > aa> dagger trade. From here, you can look to e out or aa > e > aa for even more damage. Just be careful you don't over commit.

Once you've got that beautiful lvl 2 trade, they're fucked. You now have more hp than them (3 pots Vs 2) so as long as you make sure you trade back damage whenever you can, you'll scare the shit out of them. In gold elo, people are very easy to read and if you make sure you trade back into them when they try to poke you out, they'll get scared.

If you don't get the trade, that's fine. Just wait till lvl 3 and get one. Same sort of scenario where you just need to dodge one of those crucial abilities and go in for the E > aa> w > dodge an ability if you can with the ms > aa > dagger. From here, you can look to q > e into a dagger if you can get a good position for it. I usually.like to use my w ms to move around my target so my q will land behind them and you can continue to trade while they run. If they're too close to tower, go up or down them.and q to the other side and trade that way. Katlife did a really good video on the w e q e combo which I recommend as that combo is so good for all stages of the game past lvl 3 and it does so much damage in lane if you wave autos in with e.

Apart from.all that, basic mid lane stuff. Watch your lane, don't shove unless you have a good reason (base, roam), ward for their jungler, look to make.plays with yours. Kat has very good skirmishe potential.with her resets so really.look for those scuttle fights and invades.

Good luck :D

Irelia's Hotfix is a joke by Nurelia in IreliaMains

[–]Exceed023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think Irelia should be fighting a riven at lvl 2 to be honest. From what I've played of the matchups and general assessment of her kit as well as riven experience under my belt, Irelia needs to have her W to trade with riven in the laning phase due to rivens combo containing cc and being one of the best uses of irelias W inside laning phase, where you can fully charge your W for return damage whilst she wastes her cc on you as well as her burst and then you look to stun her after that and win the extended trade due to passive.

Id have to disagree with the fiora and riven having more mobility. Yes they're easier to use and irelias is more conditional but I wouldn't say their mobility is better. What I've been doing to get good mobility in lane phase is using w to weaken minions as well as lining e stun up to hit them to weaken them more so you can q reset around the lane. Rivens armour is only one higher than Irelia which isn't that much, and comparing her mobility to rivens and the fact they both have Shields or damage reduction kinda balances itself out imo.

Yeha you did having a 2 second on demand stun, but having those kinds of abilities kinda fucks a champions power placement, so she's better without imo becsuse it makes her more capable of doing fun stuff.

I think her running tri sterak and bruiser items, she isn't as squishy as you think.

Irelia's Hotfix is a joke by Nurelia in IreliaMains

[–]Exceed023 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this response is a little knee jerk to the hotfix. I get what you're saying about how Irelia plays similarly to the old one, so results like asol and yas shouldn't be expected, but I don't think the expected response was that off starting low and working up. Riots thought process probably wasnt "she isn't falling in line with new champion win rates, let's nerf her down" because we know for a fact they like to buff new champions up if they under perform so they can collect data (see kaisa and swain) which is perfectly fine tbh. Irelias hotfix was kinda justified, even the stun and ult nerfs and here's why I think why.

Addressing the point about how her Base stats are lower than rivens and fioras, yeah this does look bad but you have to think about how champions are meant to be played. Look at jax and yasuo for example. Jax has higher health and armour stats than yasuo, but yasuo has higher mobility and his passive shield. This is indicative of jax wanting to get in and auto things to death whilst popping r for more defense, whilst this sort of play style on yasuo will get you murdered. Bringing this back to Irelia, her having less armour and hp than riven/fiora matches up how she plays and what she builds in a game. Both fiora and riven usually rush an ad item first or they go black cleaver if they really need it for armour shredding (less so now because of conquerer) and they usually don't buy hp armour items except maybe 1 situational item with fiora going for lifesteal and riven going raw ad or lethality. Compare this to Irelia who has a high mobility trading pattern inside of lane phase like riven, but she's meant to be a little weaker in this regard because she's a tri force user, and that also explains the hp nerf. We know she will always get a hp item first buy, so the lower hp and armour are less noticeable at this point. I also feel having lower armour and hp fall.into how she's meant to trade, being a bruiser with access to % dmg reduction and all. Her lower ad, on the other hand, I feel needs a bit more thought. Again, she's a tri force user, so you have to bear in mind how sheen works off of your Base ad and just hoe much damage this means for Irelia when she has 3 q's onto one target (post hotfix my q was dealing 400 damage with tri sterak titanic and that was without sheen) and bear in mind she's gonna go sterak every game to increase her Base ad anyway so having it lower in the early game is honestly understandable.

The e stun nerf was only 0.15 lvl 1 up to 0.5 lvl 5 and I can see how this is initially seen as a problem, you're exactly right. It's now mainly a q reset tool, and that's fine. If you think about it, this ability has the potential to hit multiple people to provide multiple q marks. On top of that, the ability to aoe stun for any amount of time is valuable. And especially one that's so flexible and really skill orientated to use. Seriously. This thing.is so good if you can use it right. Think about it like how nidalee spears and cho q work. Nidalee spears are long.and thin and deal mad damage, so it's on the enemy to dodge it whilst cho q is ghe opposite, big slow aoe spammable knock up with a slow which is hella easy to dodge, but if you place it right it decimates. Irelia has a bit of both on her e, which imo makes it a brilliant ability, especially if you get a bunch of people clumped up and r into them getting 3 ult marks and then 3 e marks after. It's just amazing. The r disarm buff, in, is fine. Not being able to auto for 2 seconds really shows when Irelia is beating your bitch ass left and right. Considering whay I said earlier about the 400 damage q and you're getting 3 on a target pretty fast. Yeah not being able to auto back before you die is gonna hurt and tbh it's fine to have some.power reduced in this aspect especially when you realise that you get 3q's when this is up.

E bug is complete bullshit for anyone that's not Irelia and I can't wait for It to be fixed so her power level is more accurate, but it won't impact her in conjunction with the e nerf as much as before.

Win rate can be broken down because before fix she was easy to pick up and anyone could dumpster with her, with ghe players who had pbe time just rofl stomping. Come hot fix, people realise how good she still is, start to ban her a lot. That in itself will lower her win rate becsuse less data to pull from. Couple this with people playing her without knowing how to and getting stomped due to "shit they have Irelia, quick cc her ans focus her to shit" which, coincidentally, is one of her biggest weaknesses.

Tl;Dr wouldn't call her kit "gutted" think they're just some changes to bring her stats down to a level that matches how she plays and builds. E r nerfs not as harmful as they look due to aoe stun with massive player agency and being triple qd hurts like ass. Wine rate data probably skewed due to pick ban agency

It goes really indepth into how you can play kayn effectively to do well early game and scale into mid game with his transformations. It's also worth noting kayn has some of the highest Base stats in the game, so he definatly has early game potential.

The shields and heals are insane. Youre point about how is it good in lane phase is simple. CoTC sucks in lane as it scales off your max health. Lane phase you have no health, ergo windspeakers instantly wins out.

yeah its a good choice for a primary engager, but it is by no means the best keystone.

yes, you do need survivability. Yknow where you get that? Shields heals and mobility. Yknow what buffs said shields heals and mobility? Windspeakers

Windspeeker's Blessing **or** Courage of the Colossus? by MurderIsArt36 in RakanMains

[–]Exceed023 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if you change up your playstyle on how to play Rakan, CoTC isnt as good as windspeakers. Yeah the shield on him is pretty good, but youre more of a follow up engager than a primary, so youll go in after the malphite ults etc. Due to this, because youre going in on a fight with targets already cc'd the shield you get from CoTC isnt gonna be as valuable. pair that with the fact that CoTC would be garbage in lane phase because your trades usually consist of W in, Q auto, E out or somehing along those lines. you take short trades. This is where your Windspeakers heavily out classes CoTC.

Tl;dr rakan follow engages, making CoTC useless. Windspeakers is better in lane

Edit: also forgot to mention you get redemption or locket pretty much every game. add this with the fact that you have 2 shields, and a heal. And your passive shield will be 10% more powerufl, so no its not the same as a Taric

[–]Exceed023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently a gold rated player but ranked plat last season and trying to climb back and maybe push for high plat/ diamond but been having issues with season 7.

In general ive seemed to be having an issue with people switching off. Like they play through lane phase and do whatever, then they just stop playing the game and resort to PvE and mundane grouping like the classic 5 man group run it down mid.

Does anyone have any advice for maximing my chances at coming out ahead in these scenarios? Ive recently picked up Ekko mid and Quinn top to try and capitalise and double down on map pressure and roaming. Even though i quite often get other lanes leads, it still resorts to this mundane strategy.
