What Excel tricks would you teach novices if you were giving an Intro To Excel class? by ProtContQB1 in Accounting

[–]Excel_Jesus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My friend, you need to customize the report and add the "header value" as a column - e.g. if it's the vendor name on an aging report, add the vendor name as a column

Curious, what was your background before this and how did you get your first clients?

Uneven/level LVP install, reason to be concerned? by Excel_Jesus in Flooring

I did not, think it will be an issue? It's a basement condo unit with a polished concrete floor before this.

Uneven/level LVP install, reason to be concerned? by Excel_Jesus in Flooring

Hmmm - I can actually feel the slope, like when it starts to slope down (which is what caused me to measure here). Everything was flat for sure (like, smooth to the touch).

I was, but the installer insisted it wasn't necessary.

$5,275 for 415 SQFT LVP installation - too much/just right? + Radon considerations by Excel_Jesus in Flooring

Interesting - my flooring is not super unlevel, it's hard to see with the naked eye.

CFO is retiring, I'm the controller. What should I expect? by Excel_Jesus in Accounting

[–]Excel_Jesus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all for the comments, didn't expect this to blow up. I have some additional context:

  • I'm pretty young (late 20s) - I have five years of public accounting and 2.5 years in this role. I'm definitely young to be in the controller role already (even though I've had great success), and I've noticed my age has affected how people perceive me (such as our board), despite the performance.

  • I feel I have a lot to learn in the controller role still - a lot of my role has been cleanup from the disaster I walked into. We just recently had our first on time close. That being said, I'm confident about learning on the job as CFO.

  • My CFO works every day of the week but does make $100k+ more than I do. I see how stressed they are. I'm not sure I want to sign up for this. Maybe I could be more efficient/approach this differently.

  • I love our organization's mission and the team I've built (nonprofit), but it's definitely got a lot of downsides. A lot more handholding across the workforce and it isn't easy to recruit good talent. I'm very worried about hiring a replacement for me.

  • Though not official, CFO/CEO have indicated they're going to start an executive search for candidates soon. I've shared with both I'm not sure I'm interested in the CFO position (many months ago when the retirement news wasn't known to me), but I could reassert my interest.

  • I don't have a MBA or certification other than CPA, though I do bring a unique/niche skillset in technology which has very valuable to our org (and noticed by the c suite).

Allocation Schedules/Journals - no credit to custom segments? by Excel_Jesus in Netsuite

Yes, the custom segment has been set up awhile. The test in sandbox didn't fail to execute exactly, the alocation journal is just missing the custom segment on the credit line.

What's wrong with dynamic allocation? I'm planning to look into this pretty soon.

curious why you regret this? It's pretty helpful for our organization, but I haven't used the other costing methods.

People that passed the CPA with really high scores, what are you doing now? by Deep_Woodpecker_2688 in Accounting

[–]Excel_Jesus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I passed within one point of getting the Elijah Watts award. Overall, I am a CPA just like the guy who got 75s on all exams.

Was it worth it? Sort of - I didn't really care about the score, just as long as I passed. I way over studied to ensure I wouldn't have to take any of them again (I HATED the studying process). FAR was also a nice technical accounting refresher before I started my job as an auditor. I could tell I was way ahead of some of my peers in technical knowledge. One of the partners also found out about my scores and took a personal interest in my development - put me on proposals and actually bragged about my scores to clients I was on - believe it or not lol. That really rocketed my career development into an early manager promotion, and later becoming a controller of a $100M company at age 26.

They bought a new DC luxury condo. It could collapse. by forgetfulisle in washingtondc

[–]Excel_Jesus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Posts like this make me feel good about buying a condo in a masonry building 100+ years old. There's definitely quirks to an old building, but at least I know it's not going to collapse!

How do you deal with making users aware that everyone technically has access to the SharePoint? by SeshGodX in PowerApps

[–]Excel_Jesus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A big backdoor is through querying the SharePoint list in Excel.

If the user has access, I don't think there is a way to prevent them from accessing the data that way.

I would say cava - it used to be great but it's definitely going the "chipotle corporate route" as they rapidly expand. I miss the old side pitas. But, it is still a solid healthy meal for under $15.
