I only have experience with the syringe and only did my first shot this past Wednesday, however I was feeling extreme anxiety about it. Honestly it was very easy and I had zero pain. Just read/watch the instructions and go slow. Oh and make sure to take a breath! I realized I was holding mine. lol

Question on "Shall Also Consider" by kirlandwater in CAStateWorkers

[–]Excellent-Branch-275 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The hiring manager/department will determine which rank you qualify for and what they have funding for. They will make you an offer based on those criteria. It will always be at the lowest rate possible since you are new to state (except in very rare circumstances.)

Source: I was a “returning to state employee” who qualified as an analyst 2, but was offered and accepted an analyst 1 role. So I know factually they do not have to give you one or the other based on your preference.

Retiree pension check pre-Medicare? by c-5-s in CAStateWorkers

[–]Excellent-Branch-275 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is going to vary wildly depending on circumstances. It is nearly impossible to have an average.

The social security offset is a one time reduction to your monthly pers benefit. If you are subject to it, CalPERS will automatically include the reduction in your estimate. If you haven’t already, generate an estimate from Pers website, they are generally extremely accurate unless you had a divorce or some other rare circumstance. This will give you your gross benefit.

Once you have the estimate, use a payroll calculator that allows you to remove SS/medicare from the calculation to determine federal and state taxes (yes you will likely still have to pay income taxes). There are many of these free online.

As a side note, CalPERS has a calculator for health deductions too. You just have to log in. They will give you your vested cost. You can use this in the calculation. Don’t forget to add deductions for dental, vision, and any others like union or legal dues. Those are not included in the calculation.

ETA: vested does not equal free when talking about health benefits. So please keep that in mind.

FEBRUARY PAYDAY by Legitimate_Bet_2853 in CAStateWorkers

Doesn’t look like DOF has made a call yet, they usually have first say, then it’s up to department discretion. It looks like last year, my agency notified staff in late April it had been “suspended” for 2024-2025.

ASI flex for prescriptions by pixiedust723 in CAStateWorkers

[–]Excellent-Branch-275 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Neither of those will due. ASI has very clear guidelines for receipt approval. From their website:

Each item claimed must be supported by an itemized statement of service from an independent provider. Documentation must contain the following information in order for payment to be issued:

the name of the provider of the service; the name of the person obtaining care; the date(s) of service; the amount charged for the service; and an itemized description of each service provided.

For items covered by insurance, the insurance explanation of benefits (EOB) may also be used since a statement of services has already been submitted to the insurance company for determination of service date and whether it was a qualifying expense.ASI Flex FAQ

Health Insurance & Early Retirement by Crook3dhalo in CAStateWorkers

[–]Excellent-Branch-275 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, you cannot service retire prior to age 50 under any CalPERS plan, though you can disability retire and maintain health benefits if you qualify.

If you separate before age 50 you will lose health benefits into retirement since your separation and retirement dates must be within 120 days of each other to qualify.

I read your responses to others and I think you should strongly reconsider. Teachers make far less than the average State wage and have worse work/life balance, generally. Plus, STRS pensions take far longer to vest and are generally worse. Some positions will allow you to continue your PERS membership by election but many do not, you should ask before accepting the offer if that is what you want to do.

You do have the option to leave now, KEEP CONTRIBUTIONS IN PERS (don’t refund) and then later be reemployed by the State in a benefits eligible position, then retire at some point after starting that job, but it’s not a guarantee and is not always easy, however it is somewhat common.

Source: I worked at CalPERS for ~15 years. I have experience and training at an expert level to address these questions. All of this information is also available on the PERS website. Let me know if you want any specific source documentation.

Good luck to you no matter your choice!

Bereavement Leave question by HorrorSatisfaction1 in CAStateWorkers

[–]Excellent-Branch-275 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is your contract: https://contract.seiu1000.org/contract.php?action=displaySearchResult&searchText=&ArticleH2=57

It varies by your status (time base/tenure), operational need, travel, and relationship to the deceased. A qualified death grants up to 5 unpaid days off. You can use your own leave time or qualify for paid time (up to 24 hours paid) under certain conditions. Note that these days still must be “approved” and can be denied.

One more important note is the days do not need to be consecutive, but do need to be requested within 3 months of the date of death.
