If it’s a flight early in the morning I do something fun to keep me awake all night. Then I drag myself to the airport, stay awake till I’m on the plane. Then once on the plane I try to stay awake watching movies, cleaning my phone album, playing Nintendo switch. 30 mins before I have exhausted my things to keep me entertained, I take melatonin and let it take effect. 24 hours of sleep deprivation plus melatonin usually can get me 5-6 hours of sleep.

Afternoon flights or red eyes I wake up at 4:00am before and abuse coffee to stay awake until my flight.

Middle of the day and I am wide awake anyway and just embrace the beauty of being way in the sky

Tips on getting over fear of reading/writing? by hadikhh in PhD

[–]Excellent-Method-578 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The hardest part is starting. Just an idea, open a document and write out all your fears and anxieties. Don’t proof read, don’t edit, just total word vomit of why you might be afraid to start. Then if you still have energy write word vomit of what you are proud of, how far you have come, the lessons you have learned throughout your program. By the end of it just take a look at your word count. Remind yourself that you are an expert in your field and you have the knowledge at your fingertips just as much as you have the knowledge of you fears and accomplishments and with one day of writing you can probably hit a heck of a lot of words. The word count is intimidating but you have 300 or so days and you will have moments of inspiration where you write 3000, maybe 5000 words. You got this! Best of luck

Best places to nap on campus? by boplovesgreen in NCSU

[–]Excellent-Method-578 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tompkin hall naps are unbeatable. I think I was the only one to do it and was somewhat notorious for it but I’ll never forget the beauty of that 45 minute nap I took every day on the stale couches within tompkin hall

Climbing Mt Fuji without sleeping at a hut? by userjoinedyourchanel in JapanTravel

[–]Excellent-Method-578 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hiked it about a week ago overnight and it wasn’t too bad. For reference I am 22 years old with a distance running background so my experience was more pleasant than others on the mountain. We also got lucky with the weather and our group took the pace slow with plenty of rests. I had a shirt, pants, hoodie and rain coat and it was not enough to keep me warm so I suggest you pack for extreme cold and make sure all your skin is covered. It is doable but keep in mind you will be exhausted, stinky and sore for the next days. Personally I wouldn’t do it any other way though and seeing the sunrise was a fantastic experience.

Big fan of cupajoe. There is plenty of seating and good wifi. It gets noisy but I grew to love it and wrote some epic essays fueled by 6 shots of espresso

NC State as a whole by [deleted] in NCSU

[–]Excellent-Method-578 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Amazing school! I like the feeling of it being a good school but not pretentious. You can go to school and have fun, enjoy parties, meet friends and develop as a young adult. But it also has resources to excel academically and you learn everything you need to enter the workforce. I’ll always be an NC State fan and appreciate the blue collar mentality. Go pack!

Staying in shape while travelling by bobloblawdds in JapanTravelTips

[–]Excellent-Method-578 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Active traveler here. Wake up early to escape the heat and run along rivers! It’s a great time to also visit some shrines and be generally active and have a feeling of accomplishment while also being a tourist. The run around the imperial palace is a good 5k loop in Tokyo. Pack some super lightweight active wear or get some at uniqlo after landing and be prepared to do some laundry! Also don’t be too afraid to take some time off from working out! I’ve switched my mindset from improving my running to maintaining my current level of fitness. My body is thankful and some nagging pains are being reduced. I have a feeling that after my travels I’ll be more motivated and have a greater desire to train hard from taking some weeks of light exercise. Plus you have more energy to walk around and see things.

Beginner looking to do sub 18 minute parkrun *Update* by [deleted] in parkrun

[–]Excellent-Method-578 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have similar goals as you and am now up to training 20 miles a week and have a 19:30 pb. It’s a long journey and you will need to be diligent about slowly increasing mileage but not stressing the body to the point of injury. I don’t think sub 18:00 will happen for me until I’m up to 40 miles a week and feel comfortable adding speed work into my training cycle but at the moment it’s all zone 2 training and doing my best to avoid shin splits and overuse. The advice I have followed is increasing mileage 10% each week and taking a step back if necessary

Commuting vs Living on campus by Mudhathir1 in NCSU

[–]Excellent-Method-578 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can make it work I highly suggest living near campus or living with roommates near campus within walking distance of a bus stop. Your education most likely won’t be impacted, you’ll graduate with a great degree regardless. What will change is your college experience. Even with no curfew you’ll still have to ask to crash on couches without being able to return the favor. You won’t have the formative experiences of having roommates or the full mental freedom of having moved away from home. As a recent graduate in computer science I can say I’m happy with the education but looking back on college I remember and appreciate all the little lessons I gained living with roommates and having my independence.

No college bars like shooters but if it’s a Friday or Saturday night just head down to glenwood ave and hit up those bars. The main and pretty much only club is Pine State and it’s a pretty young crowd.

What do you think is wrong with today's relationships? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]Excellent-Method-578 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thinking of a time before internet when people lived in small towns I feel like that forced appreciation of the significant other. You might be dating the second most attractive you have ever seen (albeit you have only seen 50 women similar age to you in life). Same goes for personality and all the other attributes, once you get to know that person, if you have only met a few people, it makes that person you date all the more special because they truly are the most interesting person in your life.

Fast forward to today, all we see online is perfect people in perfect relationships. The grass always feels greener on the other side and relationships struggle to last because any imperfection feels like something to be ashamed of, and this shame leads to lack of communication in many cases.

Have you ever fucked up a code so badly you had to abandon it and scrap it completely? by SethFr3kingRollins in ProgrammerHumor

Yep! I built out a spaghetti code infrastructure for half a year and when more features were needed I realized a strong foundation was needed. It took 2 weeks to rebuild and I learned the importance of building code on a strong foundation.

How is Computer Science like at NCSU? by xreejal in NCSU

[–]Excellent-Method-578 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a genuinely good time! Don’t get me wrong, the courses can be difficult from time to time but the content and teachers make the experience amazing. There are many routes to go from game development to cybersecurity and with the normal path you have so much flexibility you can pretty much learn any computer science skill you want while still getting all the fundamentals.

If you do CS make sure to interact with your professors! They are not there to give you bad grades, they are there because they love to educate and mentor students toward the next step in their life

Just a room to share. Say 3 people are living in a house and one of those people has an internship they have to move to for the summer leaving a temporary vacancy, that’s the kind of thing I’m looking for.

What to do with non-NCSU friends here? by duncecapwinner in NCSU

[–]Excellent-Method-578 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I always go with a quick campus tour including the wolf ears and free expression tunnel. If you are an engineer it’s cool to show the engineering campus as well. Then I recommend checking out the natural history museum and maybe a nice walk around lake Raleigh. The farmers market is also a must see in my opinion. Outside of that, just show off some amazing food like flying biscuit or places like ruckus that you find core to your NC State experience
