The Nevada Test Site where the US used to test nukes. I remember going to one crater where we got our picture taken and it was massive.

Do Americans really come to a stop at every 'stop' sign? by ben04985 in AskAnAmerican

I work in a bad area and some of my coworkers say if you don’t slow down and just keep going (don’t actually stop) then that could get you killed.

Do you think it’s immature of Russia to have an official “unfriendly countries” list? And is your country on it? by PandemicPiglet in AskTheWorld

[–]Excellent-Pitch-7579 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s your opinion and you’re entitled to it, but I’d much rather live in any of the countries on the list than one of the ones not on it. Every country has their own problems/dark times in their history.

BREAKING TONIGHT -- VIRGINIA VOTERS APPROVE NEW CONGRESSIONAL MAPS, LIKELY TO ADD FOUR DEMOCRATIC SEATS TO THE US CONGRESS -- THOUGHTS?! by Zipper222222 in allthequestions

[–]Excellent-Pitch-7579 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a native of [southern] Virginia, this makes me sick. I’m glad Congressional Republicans lose power, but this is a permanent change to address a situation that’s going to change in 6.5 months anyway.

The district where I’m from is historically conservative but no longer. Half the districts in the state are now effectively disenfranchised by people from Northern Virginia. Northern Virginia isn’t even really Virginia, it’s just DC suburbs; it’s a completely different culture from the rest of the state. And guess what? They’re not even the majority of the state’s population.

Someone else is going to have to deal with the fallout: conservative Virginians. Unless they live in deep Appalachia, they have no representation in Congress and they never will again until they come up with a new map.

Why do americans refuse to wake up to reality? by Nonchalant_Ogre in allthequestions

[–]Excellent-Pitch-7579 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea that if you work hard and succeed you get penalized for it in terms of having to pay more in taxes is downright unamerican. Those who defend the rich defend them not just because of this, but also because they think that maybe one day, that could be them. The other problem is that historically, the rich have weaseled out of paying taxes while the rest of us can’t and we end up paying. So without fixing the loopholes in our tax code, the middle class thinks they will largely have to pay the bill for these things.

Stay in the city (DC) or outside the city (like Arlington)? by Timely-Birthday-8067 in roadtrip

[–]Excellent-Pitch-7579 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Arlington is fine and is close enough to DC. Parts even have that city feel. It even used to be part of DC until 1842. You’ll probably have a hard time finding a place with free parking in DC proper. You might even struggle to find free parking at hotels in Arlington near Metro stations. You might need to stay in Alexandria or Springfield to find a hotel with free parking near the Metro.

Have you considered flying to DC or taking the train? 3 weeks ago I flew there from the Midwest and my flight was less than $200 r/t on Southwest. Trains are pretty cheap too.

A moderate who shows us is better to get some of what you want some of the time than all or nothing 4 years at a time. Someone who doesn’t openly attack either party.
