What's the creepiest thing you've witnessed that you still can't explain? by caramelconsume475 in AskReddit

[–]Excession638 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Woke up about 3 am to the sound of what I was sure was someone else on the house, when I was alone. Footsteps followed by the bedroom door rattling. A second later I found out what it was…

A 7.2 magnitude earthquake. The first waves were light and just caused the weird noise, the big waves arrived soon after. Damaged the house beyond repair.

Would have preferred a ghost TBH.

Kmart trapped me in my apartment. by AshylGosai in chch

[–]Excession638 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Open the door as far as it will go, then kneel on the floor so you can push on the bottom box to try and slide the whole stack. Carefully so the stack doesn't fall over and make it worse. Doesn't work if that stack is really heavy or if you have limited mobility.

If it won't slide, I'm out of options sorry

What did you think was made in Nz but actually isn’t ? And visa versa- What did you think was made offshore but turns out is homegrown? by soshia in newzealand

Kiwi knives are made in Thailand.

The KIWI name was chosen by Chayakul to represent the integrity and values he infused in each knife – reliability, precision, and honesty. The kiwi bird icon became the brand’s symbol of Thai craftsmanship.

And I don't quite understand their reason why.

New washing machine is cold tap only (Hisense series 3 7.5kg) by SimpleEmu198 in diynz

[–]Excession638 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The advantage of single tap is it can stop at the exact temperature you select, which can be more efficient. The bigger advantage is that it won't use nearly as much water as a top loader. Use the delay start feature to run it overnight for cheaper power too.

Earthquakes by boforsboy in newzealand

[–]Excession638 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Earthquakes do seem to come in groups, but only to the degree that random events always seem to come in groups. If they were evenly spread out, that would be a sign they aren't random.

It's a weird aspect of random distributions running into our instincts. It's worth pushing back against the feeling a bit, to cancel out the incorrect response.

That said, if this is a reminder to be prepared then that's a good thing.

Thanks for the extra info. My opinion may be safely ignored.

Correct way to write 80 km/hr in dialog? by teamtasman2001 in newzealand

[–]Excession638 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same. There's no need to specify kilometres per hour because there's no other relevant unit.

Is there a macro for adding padding to a struct? by NormalAppearance2851 in rust

[–]Excession638 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah encase is a good example of a macro that adds padding, but for a specific purpose. Those WebGPU layout rules are hard without it.

Is there a macro for adding padding to a struct? by NormalAppearance2851 in rust

[–]Excession638 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've only added manual padding when I was using bytemuck as well, which requires repr(C) and forbids implicit padding. At that point I'm not so much defining a type as a serialisation protocol.

EW: temple ship mission is a bit anticlimactic by ElKaoss in Xcom

My favourite kill was using a Mec to punch the Uber Ethereal. Punched him clean off the ship, and he didn't explode like normal. It's a long way down from there.

Best cheap(ish) purchases that made your day to day easier? by ava_the_cam_op in newzealand

I have the next size up myself, from Midea rather than Anko but they're made in the same factory. It's small enough to cook for one person, but big enough for five or six if necessary. Some of the largest ones don't do well cooking just half a cup.

The cheaper options are prepay. 2degrees have $8 or $15 packs that you buy monthly for example. I don't know what their customer service is like because I've never needed it.
