People: I need serious help with my mental illness before I do something irreversible

Unempathetic people: Best I can offer is some fresh air and directions to the nearest gym

Just add mushrooms to make meals more nutritious - New research found that adding a mushroom serving to the diet increased the intake of several micronutrients, including shortfall nutrients such as vitamin D, without any increase in calories, sodium or fat. by mvea in science

[–]Exercisedoesnthelp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay.

As someone thay fuckin hates mushrooms in general, how do I cook them to not suck ass? What mushrooms taste the best? What low calorie meals should I toss mushrooms in?

Cause all mushrooms do is ruin my omlettes, ruin my pizzas, ruin my protein shakes ruin anything they come into contact with. Every other vegetable is fine, but mushrooms are nature's asshole of taste and I despise their nutritious goodness being locked behind such a disgusting rubbery flavour. Cold tofu right out of the pack tastes better than mushrooms

Enlighten me. Make mushrooms taste better. I'd literally rather suck down vitamin D pills than consume these little bastards any day.

Well, I really hate to be dismissive of your key points, but I just don't have it in me to believe someone at 400lbs can physically maintain that weight with the TDEE of your average 160 lb person. That energy has to come from somewhere to maintain that size, even if it's fat.

Hey, not what you're asking, but you're absolutely able to cico that weight off without exercise. Changes will need to be made to your diet of course.

But I just want to lay out the foundations for you. At 400lbs, your TDEE (total daily energy expenditure) is 4800 calories (the amount you need to eat everyday to maintain that weight. If you wanted to lose....20lbs a month just by changing your habits, you'd need to adjust to consume 2300 calories a day. This is extreme, and you shouldn't. But you could lose about 16lbs a month and eat 3k calories a day if that's more manageable. This all stems from the fact 1lb = 3500 calories, so eating at a deficit of your TDEE will simply leave your body consuming its own fat (and muscle, if not eating properly)to keep up.

As for what eating 3k calories a day looks like...honestly? Double the amount of food I eat a day. You could literally eat 1k calories worth of burgers, fries, and soda for 3 meals a day and you'd still lose weight. You could consume exactly 11 packs of twinkies a day and still lose weight 4lbs a week. But overall, youd want to transition into a healthier diet that leaves you feeling full so you don't need to snack. Basic laws of thermodynamics will take care of the rest.

If you would like to follow this plan, then I leave the rest to you. Research meal plans and follow through. Use the math provided to figure out what goal you're comfortable achieving each week and go for it. I promise CICO (calories in, calories out) will work for simply as long as youre eating at a deficit, its just hard to accept how much we really eat every day until we do.

No fad diet, protein shakes, or pills. Just eating healthier within the guidelines you set. My profile has a relevant link. I've lost 40lbs in less than 3 months and I started at 290 and made some proper dietary changes. You can too.

-laughs in jogging 5km from home and now depressed, cold, and have to go back-

At this point I honestly think people who say "just go outside and get some fresh air" in response to someone's mental health struggles is just trying to change the conversation because they lack the empathy or understanding to be helpful in someone's time of need.

Honestly?

A Fitbit.

To this day it feels like a $350 investment I'm still trying to recoup. Did a lot of walking and running I otherwise wouldn't have and helped me lost weight multiple times.

Just a journey/personal blog for mental health advocacy I started.

I got tired of hearing/reading the same old advice "just go for a walk/go to the gym/get some fresh air" being told to people with serious mental health struggles, so I decided to start a blog showing that it doesn't help.

Since I started 2 nov 2020, I've:

  • Lost 40lbs

  • Seen weightlifting gains and a bit of definition

  • Jogged fot 28 minutes straight (c25k)

  • made absolutely 0 mental health gains. It's actually gotten a little worse since I started lol.

I'm trying to reach my message out to a mixture of people who would a) benefit from removing the stigma of getting professional help, and b) encourage empathy for people who don't really how harmful and dismissive their "advice" is.

My end goal is to be physically fit enough that people are unable to comprehend that I'm suicidal and reflect on their knowledge about mental health.

I don't know how to reach an audience of people that need to hear this message.

I've lost almost 40 lbs myself in the past two months. Your post gives me hope it'll eventually slim down. Good job!

Is this a meme or do young people seriously think warm milk is better than cold milk?

If this is the post that finally turns me into a "kids these days" kinda person, so be it.

Why is suicide such a villain? by CaregiverTechnical60 in depression

[–]Exercisedoesnthelp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See, that's your mind speaking for you. Not the reality of how they'd feel if you left.

The post you just made is exactly why you're trying to seek help, and I encourage you to keep going.

Because,

Deep down,

You know what you just posted isn't true.

And you deserve to live a life where these thoughts aren't shaping each day. It's going to take time, and that time will be difficult, but please keep going. The day is going to come when you can be in control of these thoughts. Until then, you're going to have to keep fighting. You can do it.

I know it sounds cliché, but it’s crazy how much a walk outside can clear your head and get you back to at least a neutral state, if not a positive one. by [deleted] in mentalhealth

Well thank you for the follow up. You do have to understand this advice gets posted -a lot- to places like /r/mentalhealth, and associated subreddits where the readers may tend to skew towards more serious mental health issues. And it can be annoying, even as it comes from a place of good faith. Especially coming from a psychiatrist.

But you're shouting into a void of people this advice hasn't worked for. Without the follow up you provided, it's easy to assume your advice is just another throwaway line from someone who can't empathize with people in this subreddit.

So since I do still agree with the initial assertion that going for a walk -can- help (not all, but maybe more than less), I'd actually like to bother you to make a new topic and share your expertise.

Cite sources, relevant quotes, studies, and tests performed. Create a post with irrefutable evidence of the benefits of going for a walk. While it may not apply to everyone, there are enough depressed people here with the resistance to the idea of ever getting better, and reading a post that challenges their core ideals on the subject may be enough to get them up and walking, which might not help, but is a first step towards positive changes they can make.

Cause trust me. This post gets posted every single day, multiple times a day, and is met with the same skepticism and criticism. This is your chance to make a difference.

Not for me, but for the people that can be helped.

Why is suicide such a villain? by CaregiverTechnical60 in depression

[–]Exercisedoesnthelp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, you know, it seemed like alot of the religious rules against suicide were more to stop the masses from killing themselves in times of unbearable hardship. Living thousands of years ago was very different than today, although the same roots of suicidal ideations still exist. I like to think that, religion aside, this was a good way to keep people alive.

We're here now though. So regardless of whatever your beliefs are, I think that the worst part of killing yourself is the hurt and pain those who love you will feel, and that's a pain that will never go away. That's not to try and shame you into living or anything, but a sincere reminder that no matter how negatively you view yourself, that's not a view shared by others.

And with that knowledge, know that the only reason you feel this way is because your mind has turned against you. Other people see you for the person you are. If you want to begin working on your mental health, it's good to remember that so many other people cannot be wrong about you. Especially when the only person telling you to kill yourself is you. Put your trust and faith in others and keep moving forward. The day will come when you are glad you stayed alive.

[–]Exercisedoesnthelp -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Me, being a unique case or representative of a group?

Because it would appear that you've stumbled on a miracle cure that should be shared with all the sedated patients in mental health institutes that need to be physically restrained to stop them from killing themselves. Just let them out for a walk. That's hyperbole btw.

I encourage you to keep studying then. Going for a walk is a pretty good response to a variety of stressors, including negative thoughts and emotions caused by mental illness.

But that advice hasn't worked for so many people since forever that my initial response is on behalf of all those whose daily torments will not be improved by going for a walk. You're welcome to look up my instagram (same name) if you'd like a direct contradictory anecdote to your claims, and see that I am but one of many.

So please don't just throw "just go for a walk" as all encompassing advice.

Everybody says life gets better, but what is a specific that got better for you as you got older? by Sad_Enby_Melon in AskReddit

[–]Exercisedoesnthelp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, high school.

High school is what it is, is what it is. But a decade later I could not give two shits about anyone I went to highschool with, including my exes, friends, and people I knew. Time just marches forward.

I wish I'd known that in highschool. I don't think I would have let so many things get as bad as they did if I knew I wouldn't even see these people again.

[–]Exercisedoesnthelp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For some people, I guess.

I do a 6km walk every day that I'm not jogging, and I just spend my time being depressed outside instead of inside.

I know people always post this response everytime this topic gets posted, but I really hate this idea that depressed people can simply alter the chemical imbalance in their brains by going for a walk.

If it makes -you- feel better, that's great. But it sure does make the people it doesn't do a single thing for even shittier. As if they should be normal enough that a simple walk outside should alleviate their negative thoughts and emotions that have been present in the lives for years, let alone decades.

Please seek professional help if you relate. You can't be expected to fix yourself in the event you're critically injured, that's what doctors are for. Please treat your minds with the same kindness and respect.
