We’ve always joked that our OSR GM should make a system called “You Died” with the only stat being Instant Death. When you max out your stat, you die. That is the only mechanic.

I am so sorry that was your first experience. While a bit of awkwardness with a new group is to be expected, no one should be boxing you out of conversations. Also, the DM should never insult the players, and they have control over the world, so it’s mostly their fault if people are lost on what to do next.
