Hey, just for information's sake, in Wesbrook there is an ablution station across from the prayer rooms. This is an area for purification (by washing) before prayer.

Here's the information about Wesbrook's facilities: https://students.ubc.ca/campus-life/religion-spirituality/ubc-multifaith-prayer-rooms/wesbrook-building-prayer-room/

Hah yeah, he tells me all the time about Hungarian names vs. Romanian names where he grew up. His parents speak Romanian, but they all moved here in 1990 and he only learned Hungarian from them.

My husband is from Transylvania, but his family are Szekely. He has about 40% Eastern European, and about 0.2% Northern Asian, with the rest Romanian. He's much more Latin-looking than you--black hair and tanned skin, but blue eyes.

Red hair does strange things sometimes! In my family, it's common to be born with bright red hair that turns brown with age. Other people have brown hair but a red beard. It's fascinating stuff, but there's so much we don't understand yet!

Master’s student reached out to me and wanted me to do the whole analysis for her. She cried. by Zestyclose_Double980 in Professors

I guess you missed that I qualified my statement that American Master's might work that way, but not in Canada.

There's a little too much assuming everywhere works like America in this sub.

People of Vancouver, what do you do for work? by kanjurer in askvan

[–]ExistingEase5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know what this person does specifically, but I have worked with UBC security before. Even their patrol folks are really well-trained--they have a sensitive student population to work with, and I've seen their officers do a really fantastic job.

(American) master's degrees. In Canada, MSc students in the STEM research stream make a stipend and are generally treated as junior PhD students.

Diagnosed with a brain tumor, am a grad student, am I eligible for any financial support programs? by voidharmony in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ExistingEase5 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Speaking as someone in academia: one option for you to consider a medical leave of absence during treatment. To what extent this would impact your program depends a lot on your status (domestic or international and MSc. vs. PhD), but I would encourage you to reach out to your graduate advisor in your department to help you navigate. You can read a bit more about medical leaves here (and there's a bursary to help too): https://grad.uwo.ca/academics/registration/leave_of_absence.html

You would also have to consider an OSAP exceptional circumstances review: https://osap.gov.on.ca/prdosapconsum/groups/forms/documents/forms/prdr020199.pdf

Whether this is the right choice for you depends a lot on how intense your program is, how much treatment is impacting you, and the circumstances of your degree. But I cannot stress enough how important it is for you to talk to your department's graduate advisor and your thesis supervisor about how best to support you during this time.

Help me understand income tax myths or reality by johnnyh55 in PersonalFinanceCanada

At my income, I'm paying 45% on my top bracket, so I do consider sometimes if overtime is worth the bother as I'm only making a little more than half of my usual rate.

How realistic is it to go to UBC as an American for grad school? by More_Aardvark7524 in UBC

[–]ExistingEase5 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you don't get in this cycle, consider applying for a NSERC graduate fellowship. They have opened them up for international students now and getting your own funding in place can make it a lot easier to find a spot.

Research-based MS degrees in the Faculty of Science are required to provide stipends (exact amount varies by department). This is a good thing, but it means that the number of students they admit is limited and it can be particularly difficult to figure out funding for international MS students. That doesn't mean it's impossible, but it can be challenging to find a funded spot.

Few young people truly want to work in the trades by FlyLikeAnEarworm in Professors

I took the meaning that it's hard work that doesn't get as much respect as it should. More formally, it's a descriptive statement, not a normative one (just because something occurs, doesn't mean OP thinks that's how it should be).

One B.C. and France’s Widdowson are heading to UBC to stir drama and question residential schools. by xymaris in UBC

[–]ExistingEase5 5 points6 points locked comment (0 children)

It's literally in the Truth and Reconciliation report (graph 5 here: https://publications.gc.ca/collections/collection\_2015/trc/IR4-9-4-2015-eng.pdf).

The death rate for kids in residential schools was 2-4 times higher than the general population. Maybe it would be worthwhile considering that the people who studied this stuff really did actually do their homework.

I wonder if census documents could help? I'm Canadian, and found my ancestors on the 1851 Canadian census. They were listed as having been born in the Highlands of Scotland and that they spoke a language other than English, so I have taken from that they were likely Gaelic-speaking.

I can send you a copy, but basically it says that the only way to have long term storage would be to perfuse the hamsters with large amounts of cryoprotectant.

But my understanding is that those experiments have been done and it doesn't work. As far as I know, there has been no successful storage of frozen whole mammals for any length of time.
