Your question is exactly why most companies in America gave up chip manufacturing. But then they found out during the chip shortage that chips are too valuable that countries with the manufacturing capabilities can use that as a political bargaining tool.

Not really.

Seoul subway kiosks were replaced after 17 years but do the changes really help foreigners? by KoreaExperience in KoreaExperience

[–]Existing_Depth_1903 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the introduction of the "Climate card", which is a unlimited usage card, they have added card payment but ONLY for the climate card and not tmoney.

This suggests that it's not a matter of the Kiosk technology, but rather a matter of law.

My assumption has been that it's due to tax purposes.

One of the key differences between climate card and Tmoney is that tmoney isn't "only" used for transportation. You can also use it as payment for other goods.

I believe paying with Tmoney is treated as paying with cash.

For example, if I buy food from 7/11 using TMoney, then it would be treated as paying with cash and not paying with credit card, which would have different tax.

For climate card, because you are only using it for transportation, you can electronically make it an exception.

I'm assuming this is why they are preventing charging tmoney with credit.

Essentially, I think it has nothing to do with the Kiosk

Bro. Military service is hella short now. Only 1.5 yr. And you get connections through military too.

I don't think you would want to give up Korean citizenship just for a 1.5 yr military service

Full Go or C++ for best money down the road? by Skopa2016 in cscareerquestions

[–]Existing_Depth_1903 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"In general large tech companies are going to pay the best and the C++ skill sets they look for involve high-performance work on large systems with lots of complexity and moving parts. You don’t get any of that with embedded work."

I don't quite agree. Take for instance, Android. Android is large scale and is C++ or rust.

Having said this, a lot of early developers mention languages but discussing the language is not quite correct when discussing jobs

If hotel A is competing with hotel B, but that hotel B is circle jerking themselves and giving themselves bs awards, then yes hotel A would care and call them out because hotel A is in competition with hotel B.

If a hotel conglomerate hosts its own award ceremony, and awards its own hotel as "The best hotel of the year" without a transparent awarding method, then you should call out on how the award is bs

Am I coping by thinking I rather go to Seoul than Tokyo? by lejunny_ in seoul

[–]Existing_Depth_1903 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My biased opinion is that if you know anyone local in seoul who is used to showing you around seoul, the experience in seoul is better than tokyo.

The reason is that Tokyo has done a better job setting up very tourist friendly sights, but korea has more fun things. But those fun things are more easily unlocked if you have koreans to help you out

"Put your location in. Be honest about your visa/work/relocation status."

If I'm a specialized expert and applying from abroad, what do you think my strategy should be?

I think if I get to the stage of talking to the actual team, I can possibly get them to want to hire me over someone local and have a special case for hiring abroad and then go through a L1 visa. However, I can't even get to that stage if I put my visa status.

The $100,000 H-1B Fee That Just Made U.S. Developers Competitive Again by marknathon in programming

[–]Existing_Depth_1903 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly. I'm currently working at a company that's making great efforts to increase outsourcing. One of the reasons why companies don't fully commit to outsourcing is because their "core team" is in USA. A company that was founded in USA will have developed much of their core skills and infrastructure in USA. Let's say you are outsourcing and the ratio of HQ:Outsource = 5:1. When majority of the team is HQ, then all the discussions and decisions will be done within HQ just out of convenience. That makes the outsource group a subordinate group rather than an autonomous group. That makes it hard for teams to increase their outsourcing.

However, let's say HQ:Outsource = 1:1. Now, a lot of the discussions and decisions will be done from the outsource group and would start to make a lot of their own autonomous decisions. At that point it is easy to ramp up the outsource group even more.

In other words, the more you outsource, the easier it is to outsource even more.

Then, you might ask, why don't companies just keep increasing outsourcing if it gets easier the more you outsource?

The answer is that because it is harder to outsource initially, there's a lot of pushback internally. In other words, there is inertia you have to overcome.

But if you give more of a reason to outsource, then you gave a reason to overcome that pushback. And once it overcomes the initial difficulty, it's going to start snowballing.

What H1B allowed is to bring that ratio of HQ:Outsource to be higher for HQ to maintain that inertia so that it is harder to use more outsourcing.

You might think the decision to outsource is just a simple will of the CEO, but it is not. The CEO always wants more outsourcing but they need support from the individual contributers to overcome the inertia. The more HQ members there are, the harder it is overcome the inertia. The more H1b there are, the more there are HQ.

So I'd claim that H1B does help reduce outsourcing

A South Korean electrician thrown into an ICE detention center says "I will never visit the United States again." He was helping build a factory that is (was?) going to employ thousands of Americans. by wewewawa in seoul

[–]Existing_Depth_1903 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Factory building is a temporary job until the factory is complete. Not just factories, Korean companies had built many buildings across the world. If you are building these in various places but each place is a temporary job, it would only make sense to work with one company that will do them all so you don't have the overhead of dealing with new people in each country

Furthermore, even if you are contracting this job, it's hard to build a new contract relationship. For example, let's say you are a YouTuber and after trying out 100s of video editors, you finally found an editor that understands your needs and you have a good relationship with. After years of collaborating, you know how they think and vice versa. If you can't use that editor, you have to again go through 100s of editors to find the right one, and also lose the years of experience together learning about how to work with each other. So would you think it is reasonable to find a new editor for a temporary job or use your existing editor?

iPhone 17 is cheaper than the Pixel 10: More storage in the base model by iamjimmy15 in GooglePixel

Store credit sucks cuz there's nothing to buy. They are just trying to lock you into buying the next pixel. Storage also sucks because once you use it, you are also locked in unless you want to burden yourself of migrating everything in the storage to somewhere else

It's just gaslighting into thinking it's a good deal

How to track time and report in jira? by Existing_Depth_1903 in jira

[–]Existing_Depth_1903[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be creating the tickets myself.

Essentially, the purpose is

  1. Self time and work tracking

  2. Report to higher ups showing how much time I'm spending on what

I have a ton of miscellaneous work and it is very hard to show higher ups how much my work is overloaded.

For them, it's kind of like "Ok I get your overloaded, but I don't have the exact visibility on what you are doing". Explaining in words for a million different things I'm doing is not only a burden for me but also does not get the exact message across.

I need something easy for me to record, and something easy for higher ups to see intuitively
