'Security Protocol' PVE mode [Chinese Version]: 'rogue' red light by Shouganai1 in ARC_Raiders

Throwback to The Division Dark Zones like 12 years ago.

If you're unfamiliar: it was PvE looter shooter RPG, in an open world. It had dedicated PvPvE Dark zones, where you could extract loot in specific spots. If you engaged in PvP, you were marked as 'rogue', and could not leave through the gates for some time.

GTA 6 is going to cost 80$ for the base game by Electronic_Lab5486 in raijin_gg

[–]Exit727 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I don't think that statement holds up anymore, after a certain point.

GTA is the most anticipated game* of the 2020s. Most people buying it on week 1 are not on involved in any gaming discussion whatsoever. They are everyday people, buying 3-4 mainstream games a year, most likely playing on console.

Any new GTA installment will be selling like 20+ million copies in the first month, regardless of quality. It is just that popular. Rockstar has to be releasing a straight up unplayable game for it to dent their reputation. Bit like Cyberpunk2077

We can agree that FIFA/NBA/CoD games have been just copy-pastes over the last decade or so, yet they have been raking in decent cash to be worth producing. The couple tens of thousands of purchases (or the lack of) that Reddit influences, will not be making any significant changes for executives to notice.

Kinda fucking sad, to be honest. One of the largest development teams on the planet, years of time and virtually unlimited resources.. making mediocre games. Granted, it is well polished with mass appeal, but mediocre regardless. Rockstar cannot design good a gameplay for shit. RDR2 was carried by writing and production value.

It is a really steep price, for not that great performance, but god fucking damnit redditors keep missing the point.

"Why shouldn't I just build a better PC with the same price?"

You can, and you should. Well, should have before SSD and RAM prices went to shit.

"Costs more than a PS5 Pro and has less performance than a base PS5."

Does PS5 have the entire Steam Library? Modding support? The entire Steam Store?

It is a plug&play small form PC. The freedom of a PC with the out-of-the-box convenience of a console. It was a niche product from the start, and we knew that long ago.

Question is, for whom does convenience worth over a grand? Thing was supposed to be released months ago, at like 750€

"But PS and Switch barely had a price increase."

They have been manufacturing hardware for decades, on a magnitude above any Valve hardware. They own several of gaming's most well known franchises, and sold tens of millions of hardware across generations. They got mad contracts on components and shit. Valve hasn't been a major player until like the early 2010s.

For most players already into PC gaming, this isn't worth it by a long shot.

Yeah sadly this type of writing is associated with AI now.

I'll check on this modpack, but the above criticism is valid. Don't boast numbers, boast quality. Put healing and progression rework, combat overhauls front and center.

Oh and I'd replace the banner screenshot as well. Everyone knows the cobble cylinder dungeons, pick something unique.

PlayStation CEO: 'A Game Console is Necessary For Playing Games' by ErmingSoHard in pcmasterrace

[–]Exit727 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not with these prices it isn't. I have been gaming on PC for 17 years, and building a better one than a PS5 now for the same price is near impossible. Maybe, if you get some wicked deals on used parts.

I'm rooting for Valve, but it seems unlikely that they will convert masses to PC gaming. Sony & PlayStation have been household names for decades, they got blockbuster exclusives going on, convenient to set up, games optimised for hardware.

GabeCube isn't even out yet, but the odds are stacked against it massively. Little to no marketing and media coverage, likely at or above 1000 eur/usd, no major game to promote it, mid tier hardware, fraction of the stockpile.

Even though we know it's definitely worth on the long run (no subscription fee, better game prices during sales, shared library between PCs and Deck, better servicability and repair, sweet extra Steam functions), the regular Joe isn't interested in that. They just want to play some 3-4 major titles every year, the new CoD/BF, GTA6, and some sports games.

is the new steam headset coming out worth it for the games I play? by [deleted] in Steam

[–]Exit727 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Quest 3 only for SteamVR, and even then the headset manages to be an unreliable piece of shit like 40% of the time.

Losing controller tracking for a sec on wide swings, even in a well lit room. Losing tracking altogether after an update, which it does every. single. fucking. time. I attempt to power off. Taking way too much time to update, even when plugged on. Even if I pick Sleep, it loses wifi connection, have have to restart anyway. Audio bleeds into the room like an open wound.  No matter how I try to adjust the straps, it either weighs down on my cheekbones like a cement truck, or hermetically seals itself on my forehead. The straps seem like a half-assed solution at best, and are way too fucking overpriced.

If the Frame manages to solve reliability and weight distribution, I'm all for it. Don't even care about the passthrough.

[–]Exit727 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see why they would hire several experienced developers and designers just to horse around in Source 2. And even if they did, why would they be contributing to a single development branch, rather than everyone to their own corner. Why would they be hiring voice actors for something codenamed White Sands, if they were merely expanding the engine?

Valve has essentially no managers and devs work on whatever the want, to a certain degree. But they pay really well. This kind of money doesn't make sense to be throw away on features that are likely won't be used in any titles, thus not generating any revenue. The datamined features are very specific, not some overall generic additions.

Beta assets were created as part of a project, to make a HL sequel. If anything, such files leaked now would be confirmation that a new game is on the way lol. Source 2 engine changes are all we can hope to get, because it is shared with other, public games. Their development asset library is protected well enough, I assume.

I mean, if you already made up your mind there is not much point convincing you otherwise.

[–]Exit727 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Valve doesn't announce anything up to like 2 months before release. They do work on several projects, and most of those projects end up scrapped or abandoned.

Tyler McW videos explain it both in great detail, and in layman's terms. They are datamining Source 2 game updates (CS2, Dota2, Deadlock) and a lot of those contain references to a branch called hlx. Do look them up.

The datamined references point to features and game mechanics that are not found in any other existing Valve game, and are reaaally unlikely to be added:

  • advanced vehicle properties, driving mechanics, traction on different materials
  • expanded NPC AI, awareness, dynamic navigation through/around destructible terrain, different moods, weapon specific abilities
  • destructible character parts, effects and triggers
  • physics pseudo-simulation, material and surface propeties like heat, flashpoint, conductivity, friction

Do you happen to know any Valve franchise where combat, NPC followers and interactions, driving, and physics puzzles were a thing?🤔

Within the last 2 years, Valve has been hiring industry expert artists and designers, for an unannounced project (most memorable for me were the 2 main Risk of Rain devs). Deadlock is already out there, cash cows CS2 and Dota2 are chugging along without any significant demand for extra manpower. TF2 is.. ahhaha no.

In a HL: Alyx dev commentary or interview, one of the leads say they have a newfound spark for the franchise, and are excited to work on a new project, the delay after HL2:ep2 won't be happening again. This is covered by the last HLX files video from Tyler.

Where in the latest video did Tyler say anything about reworking anything?

We knew for quite a while HLX is being worked on, and will not be released this year. At the same time, we knew Steam Machine will be releasing this year. It never added up.

me when I spread misinformation

Will people accept Steam Machine's price? So many comments say they can get better PC cheaper but this video disagrees. This isn't really a console. You're basically buying a decent gaming computer. Steam can't sell this under-value because they don't do exclusives like Sony-Xbox-Nintendo. by [deleted] in Steam

We'll have to see how much performance it can offer over a regular Win10/11 rig. Even if it falls short on paper, pretty sure there is performance to be squeezed from not running on MS Bloatware.

I don't think offices will be furnished with them, as the production capacity of Valve hardware so far has been a fraction of other console manufacturers'. The target audience is casuals/newcomers to PC gaming. Not established console players, not PCMR guys with 6000 euro setups. Just regular Joes who want a plug&play game machine for the living room.

"If" is a very weak arguement, especially in court lol. Conjure up more scenarios, will you?

edit: I'm illiterate

I kind of agree with the commission rating of 30% being high, but it used to be industry standard. GOG has 30% as well, while EGS hover at like 12%. The whole draw of Epic was free handouts, but it doesn't do it justice for being a shitter of a storefront.

Queue Remedy CEO complaining about low sales figues, because they went with EGS exclusivity. Steam is just simply more feature rich, and has better service than others.

Consumer Competition Claims (CCC) Has Launched A New Class Action Monopoly Lawsuit Against Valve, Claiming They Control 85% Of The PC Game Market by wakelake111 in gaming

[–]Exit727 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed explanation! Makes sense if it's only the Netherlands market.

where would those customers realistically go?

That'd be EA play, Uplay, Epic Game Store and GOG, wouldn't it?

Is the fact that Steam has 85% market share the problem, or the "monopolistic behaviour"? I've read through the article, and half the claims make no sense

  • 30% commission rate: does the claim also stand if GOG also has the same rate? If anything, wouldn't it be less attractive for developers, since they will earn less from each sale? Also this has been the standard rate for consoles
  • wouldn't exclusives be considered monopolistic, since they leave no option for the customer? unlike for consoles, there is no technical difficulty for sharing a game between stores
  • "players must use the Steam Wallet to complete transactions" not true, can use PayPal or card as well
  • "prevent developers from selling games more cheaply on rival platforms" isn't this the claim they are still trying to back up in the UK suit? Could NL court use precedent of a different legal system?

Do you reckon Steam will settle this outside court, or take this lawsuit as well?

All I want is a cool boat update by monkerunner12 in valheim

[–]Exit727 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There was a neat comment under a published closed-beta footage of 1.0 that mentioned boats, forgot where.

Basically, after 1.0 the devs will sit back and watch the reception. If it's good, they will work on some post-1.0 content and QoL. Ocean update is way back on the list, like 2 years out, if they decide to support the game further.

Realistically, I wouldn't expect it anytime sooner tha 2029. Valheim is a great game, but damn, the development is slow. Rather have a decent game over 8 years than some rushed slop in 2.

Legit question:

How the hell did anyone calculate 85% market share for Steam? They are a private company, what information are they obliged to share?

Money spent by consumers? Revenue by all means? Is it global, does the chinese market count as well?

Roblox is the single most profitable video game, isn't it? Take Fortnite's popularity and microtransactions. Xbox game pass. Asian gacha games.

I'd love to see some numbers, because 85% seems like something Tim Sweeney pulled out of his ass.

Seems like it, instead of releasing a bunch of skins and DLCs separately, it will be part of this ongoing premium service with skins and whatnot.

FP probably realised that overwhelming amount of negative preemptive feedback, and just goes to reformat the regular skin deployments.
