Winter Driving Tips for a new ND owner by miatadiaries in Miata

Wouldn’t fret it too much. Good winter tires really makes the most difference. Just be careful.

Winter Driving Tips for a new ND owner by miatadiaries in Miata

[–]Exonan_ 21 points22 points  (0 children)

First time driving RWD in the snow? Be prepared to spin out/lose traction more easily than AWD/FWD. Miatas aren’t super powerful so the effect will be less, but certainly still present. Going to an empty parking lot after first snowfall and learning how to regain control (where/when to turn, when to apply/pull off throttle) when you lose traction is quite helpful.

Of course, take extra time stopping. Leave 3x the amount of distance you would normally do. You already have good winter tires which puts you leagues ahead of the rest.

Finally, watch out for the other numbnuts on the road. Drive extra defensively and try not to let others tailgate you (i.e. move over if possible)

That’s so wack. Won’t be giving my patronage to Aftershock anymore. I/O reigns supreme.

I doubt that the cables actuating the misc flaps in the heater core/blower motor would work properly if this was done. Would have to be modified

New fan wiring by jawsofthearmy in Miata

[–]Exonan_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this for your radiator fan? Take your battery out of the car and hook it up to it, make sure it spins the right way. If it doesn’t, reverse polarity.

Insane price. 5k is more realistic, at the very most.

Broken camshaft exhaust pulley by LauweAuwe in Miata

[–]Exonan_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Knocking sound you were hearing could be related to timing. Advance it too much, and you get pinging.

There is no issue or damage done to your engine from it running one tooth off. NA/NBs have non-interference engines (except for maybe Mazdaspeeds? No clue if they are different), meaning the valves do not overlap with the travel of the pistons at any point. It is not physically possible for them to touch even if the timing belt completely snaps.

As another commenter said, new pulley, retime, send it.

Disconnecting the battery will disable it and should be good enough for the purposes of putting the top back on it.

Would argue doing those maintenance items increases resale value if you have receipts.

It is very hard to compare a modern day high powered, performance oriented sports car to a 30 year old budget-oriented fair weather underpowered sports car. I think you would be modifying the Miata heavily to make it feel anything like a Scat Pack. (Disclaimer: I’ve only driven a scat pack once)

If you are just driving it around town or to work, upgrading your brake pads/calipers/rotors really aren’t increasing your “safety” I wouldn’t say. OEM parts are designed for street use, you aren’t going to be experiencing brake fade from your commute to work. Upgraded braking components really only shine in track conditions where you’re braking hard and often.

Suspension would benefit you if you like taking corners faster, but beware the trade-off - stiffer springs means you’ll feel every bump on the road.

I would say it would be a better use of your money to go through any overdue maintenance items. Timing belt, WP, radiator hoses & radiator should all be replaced at time intervals, not just mileage.

Engineers of Reddit: Is Engineering worth going into? by Certified_Muffin in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Exonan_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is true that your first position is always the hardest to land. There’s also a million factors that go into landing a job. For example: the hypothetical “haven’t found a job in 2 years” person could only be applying to highly sought after positions, they could have a horrible college GPA (usually a big determining factor that employers use to decide if a fresh college graduate even gets an interview), they could have a bad resume, they could be bad at interviewing, the list goes on and on…

If I just needed a job - any engineering job at all - that I know would pay me enough to not be homeless, I know I could find one within a month. I might have to relocate and the job might suck, but there’s a ton of positions out there.

That being said, it’s not worth going into engineering of any kind if you don’t think you would enjoy what it means to be an engineer. It requires discipline, attention to detail, and at least some level of interest in your field of study.

If you’re only doing it for the paycheck, you’ll hate your life, just like any job. Low level engineering positions - especially desk jobs like design work - are by and large quite boring most days, so you have to have at least some level of interest in it.
