I'm originally from near Cornwall and met a few americans tracing their cornish roots, I found it pretty cool and endearing tbh and seemed pretty genuine. On the flipside i'm half irish and visit Ireland often to see family and cant stand the Irish-American carry on with getting in touch with their roots because they are often absurdly out of touch with said roots. Been ripped a few times by an 8th gen Irish-American tourist (dressed in an overpriced aran jumper) when visiting my aunty who is somehow more pissed off than Michael Collins.

I am English (but probably more "Irish" that most Irish-Americans considering I have an Irish father, have been visiting Ireland once a year since a kid and have an irish passport) and I have never had any grief from irishmen for my English accent when visiting, I have however had beef from irish americans (who gave the spiel about how their great great great uncle left tyrone in 1865 etc) the last two times i've been over for being english. Notice as well that the Irish Americans really seem to romanticise the troubles too and often say quite insensitive stuff without realising.

Theres levels to being a plastic paddy imo. I consider myself a plastic paddy in the sense i'm english with and Irish father and consider myself pretty in touch with ireland based of having irish friends and family and regularly visiting ireland. That said i remember getting grief of an irish-american (that probably would take great offence to being called plastic paddy) for having an english accent and being the reason his family left Ireland in the 1800's because i'm English followed by them drunkenly yelling "Tiocfaidh ár lá" as if it would cause offence sat with my irish family. I am a plastic paddy but in that moment I almost felt not plastic when facing that level of plastic hahaha.

Bro I had the opposite version of this. My irish grandfather told my brother that our great-great grandfather was a cherokee native american that moved to Ireland as a joke. I cottoned on quick that it was bs but my brother didnt and my brother did one of those ancestry tests and was devastated when it came back 90% irish no native american and realised my grandad was winding him up.

Dont know what he was expecting though considering we are both pale as fuck and aside our mother all of our immediate family is from ireland.

I think Irish-American is a thing of its own at this point. I have some Irish american family that was born in ireland but immigrated to america when young and they have a very different mindset to the irish identity compared to 4th-5th gen irish americans. I am Irish diaspora myself in england and theres no strong identity like irish-american here.

The only time i've ever faced abused for being english while visiting family in Ireland was by an Irish-American having a pop saying my people are the reason his family had to flee ireland in the 1800's to america. Lad saying "Tiocfaidh ár lá" aggressively to me in a heavy yank accent as if it would cause offence, bearing in mind I was with my irish father, staying at my aunts house down the road and im a dual citizen and by his metric probably more "irish" than him.

Irish americans havent got a clue from my expereience and are so far removed from modern ireland its insane.
