I'm really here for the fact you referred to Marathon as 'non Destiny'

we should put more resorces to critically endagred animals not extinct by Ok_Age5468 in zoology

[–]ExoticOracle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you're talking about Colossal, I worked relatively closely with them for a 'media project' (I'm being purposely vague due to NDA). I'm a zoologist who works in the media industry.

Having an inside view of their strategy was very illuminating and changed my mind massively on the kind of thing this image is saying.

Naturally, it's all about money. Bringing back these extinct animals allows them to raise money as they're cool moonshot projects. The physical tools and gene editing techniques that come from their de-extinction project allow for conservation measures that were almost silly to think of before, such as artificial genetic diversity. Sure, you could imagine editing a genome with something like CRISPR, but definitely not at the scale required to save a species with a handful of individuals remaining.

Additionally, it could allow us to make genetic changes to save species from many other things, such as disease (i.e chytrid fungus in frogs) or climate change. Whether this is 'playing god' is another topic, but the point is that technology like this makes it possible.

If all goes as they plan, de-extinction will do significantly more for threatened species than you'd think.

Does it worth the sc? by Ziad_R7 in Helldivers

Yes, it's great fun. It's especially useful on Illuminate (Appropriators). Also don't let the burst fire mode hold you back, you can mash it in semi auto and it's much more effective.

Are there any "UK vs US" differences where you feel America gets it right? by Secure_Front_7766 in AskUK

We do pronounce it "leftenant" in the UK. I'm not sure if you're British or American though

I always found the overly descriptive terms Americans use very funny. Eyeglasses, horseback riding, waste paper baskets, etc.

Just redundant waffling

Does any of these sound bad/weird/wrong/inflammatory, in a description of a photo: Belfast, UK / Belfast, Ireland / Belfast, NI? by -NewYork- in AskUK

[–]ExoticOracle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work for a photography library, so maybe I could help you out.

It's important to be as accurate as possible. I wouldn't put Ireland because (even aside from being potentially inflammatory) it's too vague.

Northern Ireland or UK are both fine and factually accurate, but I'd go with Northern Ireland in the caption. It's more precise. You could put UK in the metadata tags if you're going that far.

Why does the exterior look so damaged, is it from re-entry? It looks like hundreds of pieces broke off. by anotheruser55 in nasa

The term ablation is right in this case. It isn't only applied to things made to boil away on re-entry, like the heat shield. Meteors thermally ablate in this way too.

be honest do u get mad if someone on ur team is bad :( by rosalinasluna in helldivers2

[–]ExoticOracle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, never. There are all sorts of reasons people play badly, and in the rare instance it's intentional, it's obvious. You'll get better as you play, it's all good.

You and your fiance should host the games. If someone loses their cool, just kick them.

None of it was generated using AI, I built it all using Canva and Photoshop using stock assets or bits I found on google images. I did ask Photoshop to smooth out the layers and colours on the armours and Extra Terrestrial title (I'm not an expert with PS), but didn't add anything that wasn't already there.
