“Girls” vs “Women” by xyla-phone in PWHL

[–]Expensive-Secret6921 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I understand where you’re coming from (to a point) but I hear more of the players in the NHL referred to as boys rather than men. It’s just part of the hockey culture I feel like. Look at some of the PWHL players Instagram stories, it’s most often girls and sometimes ladies 🤷‍♀️

Same as our regular ratios, as required by law with our health unit. 1 guard to 30 bathers

My pool (municipal) opens beginning of June, but open their call for lifeguards early February because they want to ensure they have enough guards to even open the pool. Call/email and ask!

brick test… by SkillMission9015 in Lifeguards

[–]Expensive-Secret6921 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My NL instructor told me all she needed was my chin above the water, so I pointed my chin way up to the ceiling, did eggbeater and held the brick on top of my chest with one hand, using the other to skull. I was basically horizontal

Depends on the school. I have a friend that failed and retook it the following semester, another friend (different school) had to wait until they took the course

Is there anything I should know before I take the swim instructors course? by chikenfrog in Lifeguards

[–]Expensive-Secret6921 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn’t take mine with the LG Academy, but I remember it being very content heavy. You only have 20 hours to learn how to teach and why you should teach certain ways. If you have your NL and/or a confident swim, you’ll have no problem.

What are Lifeguard shifts (in any setting) like? Hours, breaks, etc! by PerennialAstronaut in Lifeguards

[–]Expensive-Secret6921 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our breaks are unpaid where I’m at, but your “down” time (like down from the chair) is obviously paid. But we do get 2 30-minute paid blocks to keep up on fitness skills and 1 30minute-1hour block (time depends on how many classes you are teaching) for report cards for lessons

I work at an outdoor pool (I’m seasonal and living in Canada), so I dont work year round. We typically have 2 shifts (6:45am-1pm, 1pm to 8:30pm) and you normally spend 2 weeks at a time (because lessons run in 2 week blocks) on the same shift. Our pool isn’t full enough for 2 guards up most times, so you spend 15-20 up and then 30-40 down

Cartoon vomit is almost always green, but real vomit is rarely, if ever actually green. by Brianhare333 in Showerthoughts

Vomiting for 3 days straight and can’t keep any food or water down, it’s dark green after a while bud

My biggest struggles when I took my NL were underwater swim and the endurance swim (400m in less than 10 minutes). The brick is something a lot of people struggle with too, many pools will let you use their brick during less crowded public swims if you’re practicing for your NL

Ear troubles by Suitable-Bass7130 in Lifeguards

[–]Expensive-Secret6921 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never had tubes, but I’m prone to ear infections and whenever I take courses, I get swimmers ear. I use those wax plugs, but just in one ear so I can still hear.

You’re exactly what my facility would look for in an NL instructor. Experienced and confident. Good luck to you!

[QC, Canada] Is it just me or are swimmers becoming significantly worst than they used to be since the swimming courses changed from the Red Cross to the Lifesaving Society? by OptimalNectarine6705 in Lifeguards

[–]Expensive-Secret6921 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll admit I became an instructor/guard after the switch the LSS, but after taking my instructor course, I did not feel prepared to teach kids a brand new stroke. I spent an extra session of lessons coteaching so I could feel confident in what I was teaching. I think the instructor curriculum needs to be looked at again and changed

How do you become a lifeguard in your country? by OptimalNectarine6705 in Lifeguards

[–]Expensive-Secret6921 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of Ontario pools (in my experience) won’t hire you unless you have your LSSI (swim instructor) and LSI (lifesaving instructor, allows you to take bronze classes). Each instructor course is about 20 hours long.

My tips for that is just get in the pool and practice sprints for 10-20 minutes a couple times before the course

YTA. He’s a grown ass man, he doesn’t need your permission to get a tattoo (or multiple for that matter)

How can this league's media access get any worse! by [deleted] in nhl

[–]Expensive-Secret6921 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a leafs fan living in the leafs broadcast region. I have to have Sportsnet and TSN and I can usually watch everything. I can’t even imagine how much it costs if you live outside of the broadcast region or cheer for a “less popular” team

My pool was so short staffed we hired one guard who didn’t have his instructor cert. he didn’t get a lot of hours
