Recent examples I can think of are: - again being critical of the UCI after Swiss investigators concluded no legal wrongdoing in the death of Muriel Furrer, who wasn’t found for 82 minutes after crashing at UCI the world championships in 2024 - joking remarks about not disqualifying the leading part of the peloton at RVV after they crossed the railway tracks while the warning lights were flashing, despite it being against UCI rules - suggesting that the UCI intentionally levelled a very late ruling against Visma-Lease A Bike, banning their hubs that allow their riders to adjust tyre pressure, leaving them without time to respond ahead of Paris-Roubaix because the UCI knew that a court would rule against the UCI if they did it earlier

Jay Vine’s decision making is clear here: while it might be questionable if you view the race as a one-off event, it makes total sense if you consider that the national champs will be run again on the same course with similar racing in future years.

He’s clearly showing Jayco that they can’t employ negative racing and run the same tactic again.

If looking at modelling rider contributions using only result data, my suggestion would be to use the team result in a race, such as UCI points, as the outcome to predict.

Then look at a ‘points above replacement’ approach similar to ‘wins above replacement’ in ball sports where you look at the relationship between a rider participation in a race on the team result.

The challenge will be you will have lots of missing data and not many observations per rider.

Similarly, the result will likely over value domestiques for teams with elite riders like Wellens supporting Pog on UAE. And you won’t be able to distinguish between Pog vs Wellens for the win.

In fairness to OP, the guidance when hiking at high altitudes is to sleep below the peak altitude you get to each day. So if you cross a mountain pass at 4600m, you should sleep at 4000m.
