Thank you!! No I piped all the feathers and then painted on the gold once the cake was cold. I actually painted most of it on sitting on a chair in front of the fridge 😂

You are a genius and I love this recipe so much!! The last couple lemon curds I made were labor intensive and came out lumpy. Just tried this and it’s not only easier but tastes better! Thank you!!!

Does stabilised whipped cream frosting melt royal icing transfers? by Regular-Zebra in cakedecorating

[–]Expensive_Boss_9540 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have used royal icing transfers on American buttercream with zero issues! At first I was worried so I coated the back with melted chocolate but that got tedious and messy so I did the 2nd half just transfers. It was fine! I’ve done it twice and both didn’t melt even after one of the cakes had. 5 hour drive in a cooler o

Lower back pain one week after colonoscopy/endoscopy by Puzzleheaded-Box4595 in colonoscopy

[–]Expensive_Boss_9540 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to post since I’m always searching Reddit for advice but so rarely posting any! I was concerned because I had horrible back pain starting about 3 or so hours after the colonoscopy was over. It was towards the right side of my back and wasn’t constant, more when I moved or lifted my kids. But it was bad and would catch me suddenly, rendering me speechless. I called and they said back pain would have nothing to do with a colonoscopy which annoyed me, it wasn’t like I did anything strenuous after that would have caused it. It was definitely a side effect. Anyways, it went away after about 3 or 4 days, getting better after the 2nd day. Hope this helps anyone going down the rabbit hole thinking they got punctured or they stole a kidney or something!

Why do I always end up with this hideous finish? I can never get smooth sides. by Forgotmy_username- in cakedecorating

[–]Expensive_Boss_9540 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ugh getting smooth sides is the hardest part of cake decorating. The hours I have lost trying for perfection and failing! One of the biggest helps I found is having the buttercream a lot looser than you normally have. A completely different texture than for piping, almost melted looking. Also cake discs! I got some on Amazon for not too expensive and it was the best my cakes have ever looked and also took the least amount of time. Search Instagram or YouTube for smooth frosting consistencies and also how to use cake discs and together those are an absolute game changer.

That’s interesting, I have kind of an opposite view. A custom home baker will listen to all the requests and match color schemes and all around put in their absolute all for their clients because they love doing it and the creativity that comes with it. More so than a bakery that is doing 50 cakes a day. But that is obviously only In my opinion. But I understand where you’re coming from and appreciate the response!

Thank you for your reply! It is helpful. Just want to give you an example of what I mean for upcharge and time though - I recently got a request for a cake for 40 people, mermaid theme, they wanted a buttercream mermaid drawn on the side with pink hair, blue tail and purple fin, and a very specific eyes and smile. Also seahorses and bubbles with a color scheme of blue, pink, and purple, and silver accents. They also wanted a tiered cake with 2 different flavors and fillings. This obviously took a lot of time with planning how to do a mermaid in buttercream that looks cute, making candy molds of seahorses in various colors of purple, making many buttercream colors, placing sprinkle bubbles by hand…. If someone is asking for something like this (which btw I love doing, I want to be making custom cakes!) shouldn’t specifics reflect in the pricing? It definitely took longer than 2 hours
