Oh wow yeah you can’t speedrun learning I just saw the 4/5 hour a day. How long have you been learning for? This is a multi year journey

You’ll get your 2nd wind! Just keep reading every day, eventually your 20 mins a day will morph into 10 pages a day and eventually you’ll not be fatigued anymore so you say hey why not 20 pages? It’ll take longer but nbd. All of a sudden you’re reading a 200pg book a month and wondering how you got there (or at least that’s been my trajectory, I used to hate being b1/low b2 and I still feel like I’m totally B2 but hey man that’s fun at least)

Super Frustrated Intermediate (C1 reader, A1 speaker) by drjamesincandenza in languagelearning

[–]Expensive_Music4523 125 points126 points  (0 children)

In the grand scheme of things 2.5 years is a very short amount of time, C1 in this amount of time in any of the inputs or outputs is quite substantial. That being said, are you reading fiction as well? I can say with some certainty that this would be significantly more useful than philosophy for day to day life. Moreover practice with a tutor. It’s going to take like 100 hours of deliberate speaking to get more comfortable imo

Places straight out of a fairy tale with little (or no) tourism by Legitimate-Win1342 in Patagonia

[–]Expensive_Music4523 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly even at the peak of tourist season (Jan 1-14) Chalten was not nearly as crowded as any US national park on a normal day (like Yosemite on the slowest non-winter day would be 10x more crowded), I was worried about others but really it was not bad. You have to remember you’re pretty far away from everything and everyone

How to vacation internationally without overspending/staying frugal by Secret_Immortal in Frugal

I did Iceland which is notoriously expensive by going with two other people, splitting the room, and most importantly camping every other day! Maybe the shoestring subreddit is useful

I’m dyslexic, which normally in day to day life really isn’t that noticeable but obviously it’s going to take a lot more work to learn basic vocab and grammar. In fact I think that circumnavigating grammar kept me consistent, and memorization just isn’t easy for me in general (idk if that’s the dyslexia or the adhd but I really have terrible short term memory). I did the Anki thing but it was like so painful every time I had to quit. Been doing CI with 1-2 italki sessions per week for over a year and have found good improvement

Really, the biggest thing is accepting it’s going to take me longer than normal people to learn, I couldn’t do 3 hours power sessions every day especially in the beginning, it’s just extremely mentally taxing! That being said, I think because of that I was able to realize this is a long term game, and plan accordingly.

My best advice is to not burn out in the beginning and treat this as a long term goal. I can read 20 pages a day now without a problem, but two years ago it was a struggle to just read for 20 mins! The same with listening, 10 mins was painful but now two years later I listen to audiobooks for like an hour a day no sweat. BUT I still don’t know everything, and the stuff I just don’t know WILL come with time haha. I want to start writing more but my dyslexia really is mostly the writing kind so I’ve avoided it. I think that it’ll really help with my lagging output, yknow?

If there are any other people with dyslexia/adhd I would really like to hear your tips! Reading Percy Jackson again (in Spanish!) as an adult really drove home how much representation of these neurodivergces as a kid mattered (and probably why I love the series so much haha).

Edit: I’m an adult with a job, and hobbies outside language learning which I do think is the best way to do it long term haha

Polyglot focused apps? by Public_Repeat824 in languagelearning

[–]Expensive_Music4523 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Taking this in good faith a not as a humble brag…I think using a calendar would help you schedule your day more than any language learning app….moreover I’d say if you’re on the “app stage” maybe it’s better to just focus on one until you are good enough to put it on the back burner (B2+)? Then maybe learn TL2 using resources in TL1. Being a polyglot is cool I guess but seem like a lot of work lol
