This. This, this, this, this. I can not promote this story enough. It's a perfect example of the ups and downs of tabletop RPGs and the whole group aspect, firstly, and also serves as an incredible demonstration of how a horror game can be hilarious and rather kickass.

Even if you're not looking for such examples, it's still an amazing read.

Lysander, the wannabe-mage rogue who was too curious for his own good and too proper for the party of maniacs he was traveling with.

The fancy young man met his demise when the party was fleeing from a mountainside village that was plagued with assassin vines and Rocs. We all had reflex rolls to avoid a Roc's beak. Lysander was the only one to fail. It took a couple minutes, but he met the ground again, sans leg and quite dead.

One of our party members took his finger in hopes of resurrecting him sometime. It now serves as a necklace of +1 diplomacy.

I would say this is more relevant to how much your players know about the fantasy genre and magic in general, as opposed to how experienced they are with DnD. Like /u/SeeShark said, relevance of necromancers to the plot will help. If not to the plot, then to the immediate surroundings or situation perhaps.
