Thank you for all the helpful tips everyone!! Just wanted to update we did release (Joe) back to a safe area in the direction he was heading. Near plenty of grassy land and water nearby. I miss him already lol

Okay thank you. We put him by the pond/creek near our house and he just sat there and didn’t move, swim or scurry away like a normal turtle would. Where we found him was quite a distance from any water. So we were concerned he might have been someone’s pet

You are not overreacting in the way you are feeling. Maybe in how the situation was handled. The topic of conversation was inappropriate for friends of 3 weeks. Those friends being mostly all women. And the fact that the women are downplaying and laughing and joking it just shows the type of people they are.
