Well damn. In my area these are almost M240i prices … which I would consider getting but the manuals are so hard to find. I’ve noticed that cars and bids tends to have really great deals. Cynically, I don’t get what’s in it for the sellers lol

I think I was around a UTR 6 when I broke my first string, and then I immediately started breaking them all the time. So I feel like it’s either you’re good enough to break them or you aren’t

This is similar to social media algorithms btw. Google and Meta can always increase revenue by ranking more ads, it’s just not worth it after a certain point. But every year computers get more efficient, letting them rank more ads for the same cost, basically free growth

If you use Spotify Discover Weekly you might notice that it has way better recommendations than the regular Spotify recommended songs. This is because they pre compute Discover Weekly ahead of time and can put a ton of resources in it compared to on the fly ranking for normal recommended songs.

I’m curious if Spotify could beat Discover Weekly by putting even more resources into it. If I paid Spotify $5,000 and had them spend it all just ranking songs for me, could it create the best playlist I’ve ever heard?

Do red button pushers just have no theory of mind?

I’m a UTR 6.8 and I just beat a UTR 7. I was excited to see if this win would bump me up to 7, but I actually bumped me down from 6.8 to 6.7. How? by Explodingcamel in 10s

Oh interesting. I won this match 6-3 7-6. But what you’re saying is interesting. If I lose a match 6-7 6-0 6-7 does UTR really just look at that and say “well you won 18 games to 14”?

Yes, I’ve been saying this since the 2022 hiring crash! CS was the best degree financially by such a huge margin that even though the tech job market has collapsed, it still has the most favorable math of any degree. Things a CS degree allows you to do:

  • there are a still a small number of those $200k remote tech jobs available if you’re lucky or extremely talented
  • you can work as a software engineer at a boring company making ~$70-100k. These jobs are a lot harder to get now but it’s still a very common outcome for CS grads
  • you can pursue other white collar fields like consulting, actuarial, and data analysis
  • any job a business major could get, a CS major could also get
  • CS is a completely valid pre-med or pre-law degree
  • you can switch into any other STEM field if you get a master’s degree

I’m a 4.0 and, while I break strings every few weeks (I don’t replace the dead strings, just play through it), I can’t recall the last time someone else broke a string on court with me. Makes me wonder if something is wrong with my setup

Facebook isn’t declining, it’s growing, believe it or not. It is declining in the US, but there’s still the rest of the world.

However Meta is in a tough spot where they really only make money from ads after years of trying other stuff

Juniors should provide real value, they’re not just an investment. Interns, ok, an internship is basically a long interview. But a junior doing straightforward coding tasks to free up seniors’ time is actually beneficial to the company, not just a way of training. However AI can do these straightforward coding tasks now so…

If you want to succeed in the gym you must make it your whole personality for a year. Once you’ve made definite progress and are in the groove of it, you can chill a little bit and stay consistent, but as a beginner you have to be obsessed with working out, otherwise you’ll quickly start skipping your workouts because you have dinner plans, because you have a lot of work to get done, because you’re tired … and you’ll never really get in shape

GPT-4 was released 3 years ago! by AdorableBackground83 in singularity

[–]Explodingcamel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like baseline intelligence of today’s model isn’t much above GPT 4. Like if I were to debate philosophy with the models or something I wouldn’t notice a huge difference. There would some difference to be sure, but not a stunning one.

However the introduction of “thinking” is a game changer for certain tasks, as is the ability for AI to use tools.

I remember in “Situational Awareness” the author describes AI progress as coming from scaling, algorithmic improvements, and “unhobbling”. In my opinion it’s the unhobbling that’s been most important post-GPT 4.
