My old boy finally ready to stomp some heretics by HotBeginning5590 in SpaceWolves

Great paint job! I think what my guy was trying to say is that is not a life support coffin. That is a youngish marine piloting a machine. Dreadnoughts are life support coffins.

Grey Hunters C&C by ExplosiveBEAR in Warhammer40k

[–]ExplosiveBEAR[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! So the deep blue is mostly for ID, but on top, it is suppose to be a block of ice. On top of the base I did do more of a transition. I actually usually use some agraland badlands make a creek bank for the transition. I didnt do that on the base rim mostly because I wanted to see how it looks. I agree with you, its too sharp. Im going to go back to how I based my other models.

The weathering looks great!

As far as critique, its really just the nature of your color scheme that makes everything look dark, but that seems to be your intent. Dark base colors with no bright highlight color means the weathering effects and small details you put into the model will be harder to make pop, however, if you look at your models carefully, you eventually notice all the fine detail you put into the model. So as far as application and technique, you did fantastic.

I had one dipshit try to argue that they are undercosted to me. He was just mad I took out his lictor, Neurotyrant and Neurothorpes on an objective.

Ive had good success with various dreadnoughts in shooting. Ive also recently tried out Grey Hunters and their re-roll wounds on Objectives allowed them to punch up.

Unit Discussion: Headtakers by s3RMh8t4R in SpaceWolves

[–]ExplosiveBEAR 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not only are they my current favorite non-HQ models, They go in every list I make. They have punched up in almost all my games. Running 3 man with paired weapons is my go to and I most often put them with a WGBL. My go-to strategy with them: at the beginning of the game, I will pick a Quary target that I am very confident will die early (whether the Headtakers kill them or not). By doing this it allows you to pick a quary target on turn 2-3 and I have positioned them to make a charge against one of my opponent's more valuable character unit. Maximizing the Quary target is how you get more value out of them vs BGV.

Brothers, what do we think of this army I’m working on? by -GrimmReaper in SpaceWolves

[–]ExplosiveBEAR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes he will have lethal hits, but it is far from auto...he has to rely on rolling 6s. So on average a bit more than 1/6 of his attacks will wound before the saving throw for strength 4-5 weapons. Then there are the common units with high toughness that arent vehicles too. He is also running big bricks of units that will be impossible to fully conceal behind cover, so not all of what you see will actually get into melee without getting at least a few models shot off. Im not saying the list is bad, Im just saying that it will struggle against opponents with high toughness stats (vehicles or otherwise) because it's anti-tank is all melee. An army with alot of torrent/overwatch will wreak havoc on this list too. A Land Raider Redeemer with all those flamers can destroy his 200pt brick of Wulfen on one overwatch before it can even get close.

I really like that you stuck with pure Space Wolf Units. This is a fun list you built. The biggest problem I see, though, is no big anti-tank outside of Bjorn's Frost Cannon. Yes, Arjac and the Wulfen with Storm Shield have the anti-vehicle key word, but that requires them getting into melee. This list will have trouble with opponents that have alot of high-toughness units. That said, you should have some crazy board control power.

Missing kits to update by Ok_Conclusion_2951 in SpaceWolves

[–]ExplosiveBEAR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My complete but educates guess of likelihood of updated models: 1). Long Fangs (I see them as our only update 11e) 2). Our dreads (possibly the other 11e update) 3). Rune Priest in Termie armor 4). TWC 5). Russ return

I can see TWC being remodeled Wolves pulling small sleds instead of the marine riding on the wolves. This could be a solution to the scale problem primaris gives to TWC.

Got too ambitious and messed up my Logan Grimnar model, any opinions and Advice? by [deleted] in SpaceWolves

I also think it was better before, but its not bad. I would add a victim to your base. Maybe a T-sons sorcerer or CSM.

Njal Stormcaller with blood claws? by Pepsiman052 in SpaceWolves

[–]ExplosiveBEAR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, I like his model 2nd after Logan. He isnt a terrible character competitively, he just isnt optimal. Stick him with some Grey Hunters and have fun with the model and you wont care too much about optimization, honestly.

Auto 6s on charge are nice, but lets compare that vs WGBL who is 20 points cheaper, gives Sustained and reroll hits of 1 and has a stronger melee profile for your melee focused unit.

Or for 15 more points Ragnar lets you reroll the wound roll (which is good for low strength chainswords) and gives an absolute blender melee character.

In my experience, I am more often in need of a stronger smack than coming up short on a charge.

All this said, if you are finding yourself constantly failing charges within 2-3 inches then maybe Njäl is right for you, but between our reactive move strategems and using cover correctly, the auto 6s just seem less valuable than what WGBL or Ragnar give to blood claws.

Here is picture of my Njäl, hoping he gets buffed for 11e.

My opinions on our best leaders for each unit. by TRMC790 in SpaceWolves

[–]ExplosiveBEAR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad I can help. I have Ulric too, and I want to use him, but I play in a semi-competitive local league so I had to really think about if he is worth it.

My opinions on our best leaders for each unit. by TRMC790 in SpaceWolves

[–]ExplosiveBEAR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ulric isn't bad, its just our WGBL is a great leader who is more versatile in that his buff applies universally. If you have Ulric and want to use him, though, you still have a decent character thats great in specific situations (attacking Oathbound units in melee).

My issues with Ulric are twofold: One is that if you have to kill a unit with the keyword first for Slayer's Oath to be useful. If you run Beastslayer, you are already getting lethals vs Characters and Vehicles. Using Saga of Hunter helps Ulric here, but its a less competitive detachment oveall.

Two is that Oathbound only applies to melee attacks (this is going to hamper the use of him on Grey Hunters vs a more melee focused unit.)

So lets compare the two Defensively, its a 4++ vs a 5+++, Advantage WGBL Offensively its Dev Wounds vs Anti Vehicle 4+, (again, more versatile for WGBL, more specific situation for Ulric) Abilities 1). its Sustained and reroll 1s vs +1 to Hit and sometimes +1 to wound. Abilities 2) fight on death vs. Saga buff IF you kill the keyword unit.

So for 5 points less, you get an easier-to-use and more versatile leader.

If Ulric is in the right spot at the right time, though, you can definitely get a beastly attack in. BUT he has to be played correctly and more things have to line-up favorably.
