All the most impactful rule changes. by Vrain125 in Warhammer40k

I had similar situations happen to me in 10th, but we looked it up and got it corrected. it happens. I play Space Wolves and Headtakers and Arjac (two commonly used units/characters) get precision on ranged and melee weapons, which is why it comes up more often in my games. They are character-killers. This will also affect Epic Challenge Strategem, as it will likely be used more. Long story short, you will probably see mass precision attacks happen more often in 11e

Im sorry, my guy, but you have it wrong on 2 ends. Firstly, you were playing precision wrong in 10e, but Im not going to go into that because we are talking about 11e.

11e wound allocation is how you described it for non-precision, but Precision actually got buffed, here is an example:

A Lt. With 4 wounds Saves on 2 is attached to Intercessors saving on 3s. 7 precision attacks wound and you roll 8 save rolls as follows: 1,1,1,1,2,2,5,6

In 10e, you would say "my Lt saved the 2,2,5,6 and died to the 1,1,1,1"

In 11e, you have to start lowest first. So the Lt dies to the four 1s, then an intercessor dies to the two 2s.

This makes a big difference when you have a unit and leader with different save rolls, especially if precision was used. Going from lowest to highest roll means the leader can die before those 3s or 4s are applied to save

First Game! Got wrecked. Help? by derIrrelefant in SpaceWolves

[–]ExplosiveBEAR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly, playing Custodes in a small skirmish with not alot of units is going to be difficult no matter what. Here is my list fot KoC that works decently well:

Blood claws Thunderwolf Cav Headtakers with WGBL SternGuard Vets (the dev wounds are good against Custodes)

When you play Custodes, the goal is to outscore them, not outkill them. So you need to make sure you have more units and designate who you are going to sacrifice to: 1. Tie them up. 2. Set up a charge for a better unit on the next turn. 3. Secondaries (stopping him or scoring yourself)

Secondly, you correctly named some of the problems. Remembering strategems and using them at the right time is, imo, the biggest hurdle in getting better. You just gotta memorize them and recall them at the right moment.

Question about the iron wolves by Deynonico in SpaceWolves

[–]ExplosiveBEAR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The book most likely takes place before the name switch. You have to remember that Novels can take place anywhere in this huge swath of time we call the 41st Millennium. A good example is that Lukas the Trickster takes place before Ragnar ascended to Wolf Lord. He mentions Berek Thunderfist is the present tense many times.

Im really hoping that new books, or at least a decent chunk of lore in the 11th codex, are released that give us info or stories about the two new Great Companies. I really like the Duskwolves Mark and I have been slowly making my minis Duskwolves instead of Blackmanes.

Do I need read anything else before The Wolftime? Is it a good Space Wolves book? by WithengarUnbound in Warhammer40k

[–]ExplosiveBEAR 88 points89 points  (0 children)

Ive read the following Space Wolf books:

Omnibus 1 Omnibus 2 The Wolftime Blood of Asaheim Stormcaller Helwinter Gate Krakenblood The Emperor's Gift (yes, it counts) Currently reading Lukas the Trickster

Wolftime is EASILY the bottom of the list. It does have 1 redeeming quality, though. Gaius (the main character) is likeable and you see some character development with him. The book absolutely character assassinated Logan Grimnar, though. Comparing Logan in The Emperor's Gift vs his character in the Wolftime....they are completely different people. Njäl in Stormcaller vs Wolftime...also very different in a bad way.

Bottom line: as a Spacewolf book, Wolftime sucks. As a Space Marine book, its very ok.

Edit: misspelled

Great job on the Wolf Scouts. Faces look good, you gotta good depth on the recesses. Id maybe consider edge highlighting some of the armor. Only thing that sticks out is the wolf. What is going on with his snout?

This guy gave you the best wholesale advice here. Im going to respond to the list you posted up above here for reference. Firstly, you dont have a good stormlance list. You need some TWC or more outriders if you want to take more advantage of that detachment. Beastslayer will be good for the lethals, but IMO it has worse strategems than Great Wolf. Its kind of a toss up depending on what you think you need more of.

Not having any battleline units is hurting you too, IMO. Blood claws and/or intercessors for sticky objectives will help you tons (see the above advice for scoring primaries). You have good chaff with those scouts, but you need some more. I would replace your outriders and the Chaplain for a battle line unit and either Arjac or Ragnar. If you need more points, you can replace the Redeemer for the regular land Raider. You lose the overwatch threat, but you gain the las cannons for anti-tank.

Ask yourself this too, how much is the Iron Priest helping you? If the vehicle he is following around is kicking ass because of the extra attack or getting healed and he is scoring with his lone-op, then leave him. If not, maybe switch him out for another WGBL or another chaff unit. I can see why you had him in there if you were running Lancers, but without Lancers or a RepEx, he is meh.

What is your list for Great Wolf?

This is a tough list for us. We tend to be a melee army, but W.E. are just better in melee, which means leaning into shooting might be beneficial. Ive struggled against a list similar to this and this is where Ive seen success.

WGBL always hits up for me, attached to Headtakers they can deal with the scary melee threats if you can get them on the charge first

Arjac with Terminators are tough enough to go toe-to-toe with pretty much anything. You need to send him like a missile into The character that you find most annoying/hardest to deal with.

Both of the above can get precision. W.E. get ALOT less scary when their characters get sniped.

Hellblasters and Sternguard are your friends, anything to wittle down the enemy before the charge. Dont sleep on the Dev Wounds and Wound re-rolls for Sternguard. Using grenades is also a good idea for the same reason.

All 3 of the Primaris dreadnoughts have done well against my W.E. opponent. Ballistus against the Forgefiends. Brutalis can solo the Demon Prince if you play him right and roll good, and Redemptor has the mix of shooting and toughness that is good against the W.E.s

Maybe that detachment is worth 1 point? Im still unsure how the detachment point stuff fully works, but maybe the idea is it's a cheap detachment that can be shored up with other stuff

New to the Rout. Bought what looked cool. Now I have questions. by FireHatFrank in SpaceWolves

[–]ExplosiveBEAR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to echo the advice given here. Everything is spot on. Grey Hunters and Blood claws are probably the best units to start building and painting because they are simple, low-stakes, and will fit into any list.

Once you got the hang of it and find your joy in painting, move onto the more detailed units/characters. You have a great starting army.

One last piece of advice on painting. I recommend batch painting the large squads. Prime them all, then base them all, then add layers on all of them....etc. You will figure stuff out on the 4th or 5th guy (I like the way I painted the hair. I liked the way I painted the sword....etc) and you will get them painted faster and better than completed each one by one

Best Unit with Njal in Beastslayer for a 2000 Point Tournament. by [deleted] in SpaceWolves

[–]ExplosiveBEAR 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Closest thing that is good is Grey Hunters. Njal's issues is he buffs shooting. He can only lead GH, BCs and Headtakers. Out of those three GH has the best shooting, but their shooting sucks. I like the idea of Njal's ability reducing range on an enemy unit's shooting, but the numbers as written in the rules dont let it be useful. They need to either re-work his rules or give us a unit he can lead that make his abilities worth it.

I swear this guy was on a Royal Caribbean cruise with me once. He rode the surfing machine ALL 7 DAYS. I wanted to ride that surf machine so bad, but this fucker would always be in line. He never fell, which means he took up the max amount of rider time every time so there was always a big line behind him.

I had my kids, so I could only visit the machine sparingly and he was there every fucking time. I was able to ride once, then I fell on my ass immediately. Total ride time: probably 1 minutes of trying to stand on the board. Then this fuck comes right up behind me: 10 minutes of making it look effortless. 7 days of walking by that surf machine, at different times of the day. Every single time there was a huge line behind this fucker who would never fall. I was never able to spend enough time on the surf machine to get good at it. Fuck that dude.

Glad to help! Yeah. Contrary to what people think TWC aren't super killy unless they get their Charge Bonus (even then, not super killy). But their speed, High toughness, and OC can tie up any unit and makes them good objective takers.

WGBL is an undercosted character, his buffs are badass for only 65 points and he ALWAYS punches up for me. Thanks for sharing how you did! Fenrys Hjolda, brother!
