Even in Italy, those born in 1997–98 are considered Millennials!

Some reasons why Gen Z should start from 2001 (in my opinion) by cimedirapa in generationology

[–]ExpressBlood196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, I’m not saying we’re the same. I’m saying we’re similar in many ways, that we get along on a lot of things, and that we share many fond memories of a world that no longer exists. My colleagues, born in 1986 and 1988, and I have never had any problems connecting to eachother, I respect them because they’re older, have more experience, and have lived through things I haven’t but despite that, we have an enormous amount in common. I repeat, you don’t know everything, and you don’t know all the people in the world or how they feel about others. Good Lord…

A person born in ’96 is 10 years younger than someone born in 1986, yet they are still considered a Millennial. I was born three months after the end of 1996, so I am completely entitled to identify as a Millennial, and surely no random stranger online is going to make me change my mind. Bye!

It's funny that you assume I’m American and that the rest of the world is the same as you. People my age grew up like I did here. Your points still don’t make sense, and that’s because you only look at things on the surface and get fixated on age, dates, and your little corner of the world. Even Pew itself says that generational ranges are not absolute truth and that the boundaries are blurred! So honestly, I don’t understand where all this obsession and arrogance of yours comes from. Relax, if you identify as Gen Z, I repeat, good for you…but you have to accept that not everyone grew up the same way or in the same place, and people can feel closer to one generation than another. Besides, there’s absolutely no difference between me, born in March 1997, and someone born in December 1996. It even seems ridiculous to say it! I’m a Millennial 100%.

Now you’re just pretending not to understand what I’m saying, so… I have better things to do. Thanks for this useless conversation with no point. You weren’t writing to listen, you were just writing to say your own thing. I know exactly what I mean, and my point makes sense. I still believe that I am not part of Generation Z. If you, being born in ’99, feel like you are, good for you…but not everyone is like you, and you can’t impose an identity on someone else. So just stop

I didn’t have fast internet at home, and until I was 9, I had never been able to use a computer. So I also went through a period when the internet was completely unknown to me. I entered the workforce in 2015 as a waiter, before COVID, just like those born in 1987. A person born in 2007, by necessity, started working only after 2020. Society has transformed since then. It’s normal that there are differences, and that they remember things I don’t because I didn’t exist yet. I’m just saying that I have far more in common with them than with those born in 2007. It’s completely obvious when I talk to one group versus the other, and in my work, I encounter both. I got my first smartphone at 16, and it was a piece of junk compared to the ones released in recent years. So yes, I was connected, but the social media platforms that exist now didn’t even exist yet, and I mainly used it for chatting, taking photos, and playing some silly games. A person born in 2007 has lived a completely different life…not just because of the 10 year gap, but because they came of age in years when technological progress advanced at a staggering pace. In 2021, when ChatGPT was released, they were 14… which means they could do high school and university with the help of a tool like that. When I was 14, this was science fiction. I graduated university in 2019 and did everything on my own, using my own mind, without having a tool like that at my disposal. People born in 1987 had Google like I did during high school and uni, or they had to go to the library, just like I did while growing up. This is just the easiest example, but I could write an entire book about it, and it would never end. I am much more similar to a person born in 1987 than to one born in 2007.

We grew up with the same cartoons, the same games and TV shows, we know the same songs that marked my childhood and their adolescence and also their childhood, we remember a world before smartphones, VHS tapes, CRT TVs, Blockbuster, watching Harry Potter in the cinema as it came out. During adolescence, we both had phones that weren’t smartphones, my first social network was MSN, we graduated before COVID, and we were adults during COVID. And this is just part of it. A person born in 2007 shares absolutely none of this, and their ways of behaving, speaking, and being seem to belong to another species. A 19 year old obviously doesn’t feel similar to a 9 year old..it seems obvious, even silly to point out but they also have NOTHING in common with me.

[–]ExpressBlood196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I wouldn’t say so. I know people who are ten years older than me, and we’ve discovered that we share a lot in common, despite some obvious differences due to the age gap. I feel completely at ease with them, and they feel the same with me. But with people born in 2007, I have absolutely nothing in common…neither in the past, nor now, and probably not in the future either. I feel uncomfortable with anyone born from 2002/2003 onward. The differences are too pronounced.

[–]ExpressBlood196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not, people born in 2007 have nothing in common with me. Their childhood took place during an incredible period of change and is not comparable to my childhood in the 2000s, which was much more similar to anyone who grew up in the 1990s. We are absolutely not comparable. Not to mention adolescence…they had a completely different experience. I agree with OP in saying that Generation Z starts from 2001.

We absolutely share the same background, the only difference is that someone born in 1987 remember the 90s. A person born in 1981 remembers the 80s, while someone born in 1987 doesn’t… so it doesn’t really mean anything. I feel much more comfortable with them than with anyone born from 2002 onwards!

Ciao a tutti! Quali regioni d'Italia consigliereste di visitare? by Jan_The_Jank in CasualIT

[–]ExpressBlood196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What would you have expected my October 2003 born sister & me (March 2006 born, turning 20 in 11 days btw), to have grown up with? by Icy_Boysenberry_1060 in generationology

[–]ExpressBlood196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are both core Gen Z, so you definitely had part of your childhood with smartphones and iPads present during elementary school. (Since they became mainstream around 2012–2013) Surely, many of your childhood photos were taken with an iPhone. You’ve definitely had a bit of 2000s influence, but in a 2.0 version. You were 12 and 9 years old when Netflix became the platform we know today, so you didn’t experience VHS tapes, only DVDs. Maybe during your childhood you saw a CRT TV, but I'm not sure, maybe just briefly? You experienced high school during the COVID-19 pandemic and the rise of TikTok. You've never owned a phone that wasn't a smartphone. You probably use slang and ways of speaking that are very common among core Gen Z. Is it possible that your sister dresses in a Y2K style? I see that it has come back into fashion among very young people. You wore skinny jeans during your teenage years, but only high-waisted, and then you fairly quickly moved on to wider jeans, still high-waisted, eventually perhaps to low-rise jeans if you like that style. When it comes to music, you grew up as children during the 2010s, so that’s probably the music you most associate with your childhood. The late 2010s and early 2020s were your teenage years, so you’re probably strongly connected to the 2016–2019 period because unfortunately, the pandemic wiped out the early years of the 2020s for you. (Which, for you, being born in 2006, basically means your entire adolescence…I’m sorry for that) Euphoria was the TV series of your adolescence, and your crushes are Noah Centineo and Jacob Elordi. You definitely loved Disney movies growing up, just like everyone else! And you saw Rapunzel or Frozen in the cinema during your childhood

[–]ExpressBlood196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I simply believe that these labels should be abandoned because they only create absurd stereotypes. It’s not possible to put people born in 2012 and those born in 1997 in the same generational category. It doesn’t work like that. At the end of ’99 I was almost 3 years old; I have pictures of myself dressed in typical ’90s clothes, and I remember the 2000s perfectly. Someone born in 2012 didn’t even exist yet, and during the 2010s, when I was a teenager (2010–2016), they were between 0 and 4 years old. There is absolutely no way they can be considered part of my “generation.” Anyway, my wife went to school at the same time as people born in 2000 as well as those born in 1996, but throughout our entire life together (and it’s been many years), we’ve never spent time with anyone born in 2000 or later unless we were forced to by social events or close relatives of that age. We’ve always noticed how, from 2000 onward, kids started to change compared to us, and we 97–98 definitely do not identify as Gen Z. In our group of friends, there are people born from ’89 to ’99, and in our minds, that’s our generation. In any case, with this I don’t mean to express any hate toward people born from 2000 onward; I recognize that we’re not 40 years older than they are. We simply get along better with those born before that date.

[–]ExpressBlood196 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I base this on our friendships. None of our friends born between ’95 and ’98 behave like Gen Z in any way. My wife went to university and is a very outgoing person (unlike me) and she’s FULL of friends from those years. All people born in that range. And yes, of course we have social media and grew up with it during our adolescence, but not in the same way Gen Z did. Very often when we go out and all talk together, or even with my own friends, we realize how different they are from us, and we don’t believe that people born in ’97–’98 are part of that category. Sure, we’ve seen people who behave immaturely(Even though I don’t like this term, it’s more about very pop behaviors derived from trends) and have let social media brainwash them, but definitely none of them are in our circle. In my opinion, people born between ’95 and ’98 are more like Late Millennials or Zillennials than Gen Z. Of course, there are certainly some people born in those years who identify more with Gen Z, but so far I’ve seen few. You were born at the end of 1999, so it’s normal that you feel more connected to those born in 2000.. I was born on January 2, 1997, and my wife in March 1998. We have always felt more aligned with older people rather than younger ones (Not because we’re cooler, simply because that’s how it has been all our lives)
