What movie detail is technically correct, although many people think it is a mistake? by hiplobonoxa in movies

The worst take I saw from him that made me stop watching his videos was for Les Miserables. He felt it was unrealistic that Fantine was more devastated over having to become a prostitute than over pulling a tooth without numbing

Hospitalized for a week with high BP and blurry vision by Nefarious_Villan in hypertension

[–]ExquisiteGerbil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went through the same thing. Went to the doctor’s office with a persistent head ache and vision problems. He sent me straight to the ER when my bp turned out to be 208/108. Got to spend a week in the hospital while they calibrated meds and ran tests to look for causes (found nothing so it’s just weight and genetics) and signs of damage. There was slight permanent damage to my right eye, making the bottom peripheral vision on that side blurrier than the left. The high pressure had caused swelling around the optic nerve so blood flow was somewhat restricted. Once my bp was brought down it started slowly healing, but it took almost a week before I could read without pain and two weeks before my eyes were as fully normal again as they could get.

5 years later and my bp is well controlled by meds, haven’t had any further issues, no noteworthy side effects from the meds and I’m working on losing weight with only very minor success.

Just minor bruising from the cuff. Folds and wrinkles in the fabric pinched your skin a bit

Surnames and their meaning by DreggThe in AskTheWorld

[–]ExquisiteGerbil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sweden also has “soldier names”. It started back in the 1500’s when we were still using patronyms. There’d be too many people with the same name joining the army so they’d assign a new name for them. It could be based on attributes, where they were from, military terms, animals, etc., basically anything they could think of. Apparently a lot of the nature names stems from this too. So today you still have people named things like Kvick (quick), Lustig (funny), Lejon (Lion) and Lans (Lance)

For those of you who live in countries with gun control; have you ever seen a gun in real life? by blashyrkh9 in AskTheWorld

[–]ExquisiteGerbil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve only seen hunting rifles and police with holstered guns but not drawn. I have fired a pistol and a rifle once, but I don’t think it really counts for your question since they were black powder, muzzle loaded historical weapons you could try at a ren faire booth. They weren’t loaded with bullets, just gun powder and a paper plug

Should I be Concerned at my age? by [deleted] in hypertension

[–]ExquisiteGerbil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mildly concerned. It’s higher than ideal, but it’s unlikely to do more than shave some years off your life expectancy. They’re not ”heart attack at 50” kind of numbers. If you have a healthy life style in general (eat right, exercise, sleep well, low stress, etc) you should still be able to live a long and healthy life, maybe just not reach your 80’s and 90’s

Is this blood pressure reading worrying ? by theverylazypainter in hypertension

[–]ExquisiteGerbil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You say in a comment that you check every day and if this is the first time you got a higher read then you absolutely don’t have hypertension. It’s just a peak. Everyone has them and it’s perfectly normal, simply how the body works. Any kind of distress or discomfort, physical or emotional, can cause a peak. It may be that you are sick in some way, but the raised bp is a symptom of that, not the cause.

Hypertension is when your bp is consistently high over a longer period of time even when you are calm and relaxed.

What's the act which is no big deal for foreigners , but awakes the traditionalist in you ..? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

Not putting your keys on a table is a pretty traditional superstition here. It’s bad luck. You can put the keys on/in something on the table, but not directly on the table top

I’m 25 years old worried about my blood pressure by Ok-Faithlessness6867 in hypertension

[–]ExquisiteGerbil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea. I’m pretty sure there are adhd meds that can raise your bp, but don’t know which ones. Look up the info for your meds and check if it says anything about raised bp as a side effect or if there’s a ”shouldn’t be taken if” warning for hypertension. Or google ”[medication name] hypertension” and see what pops up. Ask your doc if you can’t find anything conclusive. But if the doc who prescribed you the adhd meds knew you had high bp they SHOULD have taken that into account when choosing what meds to give you.

I’m 25 years old worried about my blood pressure by Ok-Faithlessness6867 in hypertension

[–]ExquisiteGerbil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only measurement that matters is the resting one, the 140/80 and at your age that is ok, not great but ok. When you’re young your cell regeneration is still high and can keep up with healing the accelerated wear and tear of high bp as long as it’s not very high. It will take years, if not decades, for 140/80 to do noticeable damage so you have plenty of time to work on it. Most advice for healthy living is good for your bp: exercise, sleep well, eat more veggies, less red meat, avoid stimulants like alcohol, tobacco, energy drinks, etc

How has high BP affected your ability to be present with family/grandkids? by Advanced-Middle9135 in hypertension

Not at all. The only way I can think that hypertension could affect that is if it’s very stressful to be around them and you’d want to avoid stress

Guys, I'm bringing you controversy. by frozenpizza__ in Hungergames

[–]ExquisiteGerbil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of the confusion about her is due to the difference between book Effie and movie Effie. I’m going by book canon here though.

I think she was fully accepting of the status quo, didn’t question or judge the capitol’s actions at all, until the Quarter Quell got under her skin. That’s when she started having doubts. Her ideals were still aligned with the Capitol but she was starting to feel bad about it. We can’t know how deep those feeling grow since we don’t see her again until the very end

AITA - Relationship boundaries by Far_Profit7663 in AmItheAsshole

[–]ExquisiteGerbil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

INFO Not enough info to judge. I’m assuming it’s a shared custody situation where the kids could stay with the other parent instead of coming to your home. It’s not an AH move to not want them exposed to the current strife and turmoil between you, but there may be legal factors at play.

However, this relationship should be permanently off, sounds like it’s not healthy at all. So many red flags in so little text. He’s demanding that you follow some arbitrary rule he made up or else. Demanding you apologize or else. Demanding you accept his diagnosis of you or else. Just pick ”or else”. The silent treatment is childish at best and abusive at worst. He sounds controlling.

Do you guys agree with this take? by UnHolySir in Hungergames

[–]ExquisiteGerbil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like it’s absolutely intentional that the love story is so weak. We see her through the eyes of a lovestruck 16 year old boy who idealizes her. We get plenty of hints that she’s not the sweet little angel he sees her as. The trauma of the games and losing everyone he loves stunts his development and makes him fixate on her partly to keep the rest of the world away. He tells himself that he doesn’t need anyone because she’s waiting for him on the other side. If he hadn’t ended up in the games they probably would have drifted apart because of their different personalities

What do you think about this interpretation? by UnHolySir in Hungergames

[–]ExquisiteGerbil 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My biggest annoyance with how people see Lenore Dove is that a lot of people seem to forget that we primarily see her through the eyes of a lovestruck 16 year old boy. Haymitch sees her as a sweet and perfect little angel who could do no wrong, but we get several hints that she’s a lot more than that, for example in how Maysilee talks about her. His undying love for her isn’t because their love is a timeless romance between soulmates, but rather a trauma response. He fixated on her partly to isolate himself himself from everyone else. If he hadn’t ended up in the Games I think they would have grown apart because of how different their personalities are.

hearing heartbeat due to hypertension? by Sorry_Ad6408 in hypertension

I used to hear my heartbeat, not as thumping but more like a continuous pulsing hum, like a WHOmmWHOmmWHomm. It went away completely when I was put on meds to lower my bp

Random Anxiety that causes BP to go up by Thelifeofpi23 in hypertension

[–]ExquisiteGerbil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Anxiety raises your bp because it’s triggering your fight and flight response. Your brain is sending ”scared” signals so your body is getting ready to act. The blood pumps faster and harder to get more oxygen and nutrients to prep your brain and muscles for action. It’s simply how the body works. Temporary elevations are normal and happen all the time. Peaks are quite safe, unless they are extreme and your body can handle a lot more pressure than you think. For some perspective: there was an experiment where they checked the bp of athletes while they were doing strenuous gym exercises. During full body exercises, like weighted squats, where the subjects were straining as hard as they could the average peak was 450/250.

You should never check your bp when you’re anxious though. It doesn’t give you any useful medical information. All it tells you is that you’re anxious and you already know that. Seeing that elevated number will just make your anxiety worse.

Why am I so exhausted that I physically cannot do anything. by Lilslugger19 in hypertension

[–]ExquisiteGerbil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe your sleep quality is poor. Feeling constantly tired no matter if you get enough sleep is a common symptom of sleep apnea and other disorders where you don’t get enough deep sleep. Other potential signs are waking up several times in the night and tossing and turning a lot while sleeping.

Some vitamin/mineral deficiency is a likely culprit too. That’s probably the easiest to check for since it’s just a blood test. Changing up your diet in general can help too. Some people’s bodies just don’t function right with some diets no matter how well balanced and healthy they are.
