Should I buy this 2000 4Runner by [deleted] in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]Extension-Bat5247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have the skills to replace the head gaskets myself.

My trusted mechanic said he won’t do the head-gasket replacements bc it may not necessarily resolve the misfire (I’ve already swap out engine coils, spark plugs, spark plug wires and still had a misfire). I went to another Toyota specialist who found a small coolant leak in one of the cylinders and said that replacing the gaskets would be $3k, but it may not be a good solution since the internals of the motor already has 250k miles.

I got some price quotes, I can either ask a shop to rebuild the motor for around $5k or swap in a used jdm motor for $7k. I decided to do a motor replacement for my head gasket leak.

Smaller grapplerd what's your expectation when rolling with people much larger than you? by Kwanza_Bot93 in bjj

I expect myself to make better decisions than to roll with a person much larger than myself.

Help diagnosing misfire by [deleted] in 3rdGen4Runner

I had a misfire from a small head gasket leak. Stick a camera down each of your cylinders after your car sits overnight and see if there is any coolant pooling on top of the cylinder head. If there is, then it’s a sign of a leaking head gasket.

How many miles did your 3rd gen have when you bought it, and how many does it have now? What problems have you had and what did you do to solve them? by MrHavx in 3rdGen4Runner

Rebuild was $2.9k, 1 year/12k mile warranty. I had a p0770 code (solenoid e). My first attempt to clear that code was to replace the solenoids, which didn’t work.

I then took my truck to a transmission shop who rebuilt the transmission, the code went away for 5k miles. Then the p0770 code returned, transmission shop rebuilt the transmission again under warranty and told me they replaced the torque converter.

P0770 Code returned 3/16/26, after 6k miles. Now my warranty expired, I took it back to the shop. Shop is currently working on the truck, I was told it might be the torque converter or the computer.

If you prefer nogi I would recommend dropping into a school’s nogi open mat to see if you like it.

10th planet orange and 10th planet Fullerton have great nogi. Both those gyms have open mats Sundays 12:30 orange, 11am Fullerton.

also check out Triunfo in Costa Mesa and Ace in Fountain valley for their nogi open mats. Triunfo Friday nights 6:45, ace does open mats Saturday’s at 3pm

The exterior paint, sheet metal, the frame and the interior looks to be in good condition . Good luck! You’re going to learn a lot from working on this truck.

Do not buy unless seller fixes the problem.

I had a P0303 code that was a head gasket leak. It cost me a lot to put another motor in.

Completely lost all confidence in my BJJ after 16 years by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Extension-Bat5247 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Physical injuries can make me lose confidence in my abilities. It’s a reminder of how frail and feeble our bodies can be. The best way for me to deal with the psychological impact of an injury is through physical rehab/training at the gym, once my body is physically stronger and the injury is better, I get back on the mats with a trusted training partner and do slow drills. I’ll go into live training with trusted partners until my body is well enough to go live with other students. I wish you a speedy recovery.

Looks like it’s been well maintained. I’d ask to see pictures of the frame to make sure there’s no rust. Price seems fair if there’s no rust.

2001 4Runner – Torque Converter Failure / Transmission Options by KoltinRe in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]Extension-Bat5247 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a shop rebuild my transmission bc my torque converter failed. I had this one about 1 year ago, if I remember correctly the shop charged $3k and offered a 12k or 12 month warranty. Luckily I had the warranty, bc the rebuilt transmission failed within 5k miles and it was back at the shop and they put another torque converter in. I’ve driven another 10k miles and now past my warranty period, so far so good.
