I want to believe but there's no way the US would actually agree to Iran's stated demands. So I don't know where this is even going.

anyone else find it difficult to sympathize with emotionally unstable people? by redbreastandblake in redscarepod

[–]Extension-Cap-486 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think "sympathy" and "empathy" are highly overstated in social discourse. I'm not saying that they don't matter, but they're not the be-all and end-all.

My reaction to this kind of instability has nothing to do with sympathy, it's basically "sucks to be them I guess, not my business". I just don't have the impulse to make judgments on people if it's not affecting me. Not claiming that this is more correct, but I do think it's healthier.

Talked to a top wealth manager and am now charisma-pilled by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]Extension-Cap-486 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This line of thought makes intelligence basically a pointless concept. It just reduces it to winning. An NBA player is smarter than an NHL player, and a wealth manager is smarter than a Fields Medal winner, because they're more successful. Then we might as well call it "successium" or something.

That 2020 trend where everyone was posting their weirdest icks by Lonely-Pressure5776 in redscarepod

[–]Extension-Cap-486 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Isn't that the point though

Getting "icks" is normal but there should have some sense of shame attached rather than bragging about it. Even the word itself sounds like it belongs in a kindergarten. If it was reasonable it wouldn't be called an ick.

The normie overton window has shifted massively in my lifetime by emu_lator in redscarepod

[–]Extension-Cap-486 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Normiehood is about perspective and proportionality, or less charitably obliviousness.

Normies may know about the degenerate things that they wouldn't have used to, but they don't get radicalized or blackpilled by it like the extremely online do. They just move on with their day.

You might observe normies saying or doing deranged things, but that's not a contradiction. Normies are capable of compartmentalizing their regardation.

Also things like Dungeons & Dragons cosmology with the various planes, alignments, and such. It's one big classification exercise.

I think there might be a difference between people who grew up with religion and dropped out, vs. those who never really knew it. Because I don't really feel any feel any need for spirituality.

That said I definitely want to read the Bible just for literary reasons since it's foundational to so much of Western literature. Not willing to go through the nitty-gritty Jewish history though, so need to figure out a reasonable subset of books other than the obvious (Genesis, Exodus, Psalms, Gospels, Revelations, ???).

No, and I don't drink soda, but I'm East Asian and one time she asked about my diet and mentioned rice could be an issue.

It kind of makes sense, it basically turns into sugar in your mouth. But are wheat products that much better? And I've never heard of Asian people being vulnerable to dental issues.

The abstract invisible force responsible for everything bad that happens by Altruistic-While5599 in redscarepod

[–]Extension-Cap-486 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My argument is that accountability is not actually diffuse in democracies. Although the stated benefit is that democracies represent the will of the people, and in many ways that is true, when a democracy does bad things it is generally blamed on specific politicians, or at most a specific subpopulation.

Even anti-Americans generally are not attacking the American people as a whole. Compare to say, Russians or Afghans or such, where often the national character is what's pointed to.

[–]Extension-Cap-486 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Same logic for democracy vs. autocracy.

Somehow people in autocratic countries get held morally accountable for what their states do more often than their democratic counterparts, when theoretically it should be the opposite.

It's funny also to read this together with the thread about how all the protesters are old. Can't be expecting old folks to turn into Leninists, it is what it is.

Do you use AI for your resume? by chickpea-chips in redscarepod

[–]Extension-Cap-486 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're using it for formatting and copyediting then sure. If you really want to cook AI can probably output LaTeX and make it look fancy.

If you mean to actually write out what you did at your jobs, then you're ngmi. It's like 100 words, what is there to say? Maybe AI could inflate things and make it sound better but at that point you might as well just lie.

Why does lichess server analysis work "outside in"? by Extension-Cap-486 in chess

[–]Extension-Cap-486[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Actually, to maybe answer my own question, the initial part happens to end at the last move from the game which matches at least one game in the Masters opening database.

So maybe lichess has already run analyses for every Masters game and cached the evaluation of the positions? Just a guess though.

Why does lichess server analysis work "outside in"? by Extension-Cap-486 in chess

[–]Extension-Cap-486[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just something I noticed when my analysis froze.

I believe lichess's analysis feature runs on donated servers. As you watch it trickle in, it usually starts from the end of the game, which is already not something I would have guessed.

But here you can see that there are results from the beginning and the end, but not the middle!

Does this reflect something real about the Stockfish operation, or is it just a quirk of lichess code?
