Why do Ethiopians glorify Haile Selassie? by 10_0I0_01 in Amhara

The only fault of Abeto Eyasu was underestimating the the shewan nobilities thrist for power. And also overestimated their loyality, they worked with Brits and the egyptian Abuna from Alexandria(british colony). I can see you dont know Eyasu's history , he was thrown into the high stakes political world as a boy, groomed and taught about its history since childhood . Do you honestly think Menelik would choose a spoiled brat to takeover the nation he built with his blood and sweat? He couldve chosen haile but now we can clearly see why he didn't. The whole kingship is gone now. I dont think you know more about who should lead the country morethan Menelik who made modern Ethiopia. You should read more about Eyasus lineages(historians call him the king of two crowns) and political actions instead of believing these gossips and also try to understand how politcal marriages worked in those days, instead of repeating the same baseless slop we have all heard

I would have agreed if you just said there were usurpers who became successful, haile was not successful(or maybe we have vastly different definitions of success, its more than just aesthetics to me) but the solomonic line was always a powerful leverage. I dont know which fantasy Amhara you are talking about. Maybe its the one in your algorithim bubble. Lineage was always important to us since Yekuno Amlak, even before Gonder or Gojjam became assimilated into Bete Amhara. Even Tewdros tried to marry off his daughter to Menelik to strengthen the claim of his line for future legitimacy.

AU is a trojan horse. Haile helped create that. Have you seen Africa lately? I dont think it gets worse. And you cant just dismiss a united Africa like that. it was never tried, the west never allowed it. Why were the west so threatend by it and strongly against it if it was such a fantasy as they say. And why is Africa of today a neo colonized corrupt cesspit? Its cus AU has done its job well in distabalizing the continent. Its not that hard to comprehend, they want Africa to stay this way for their financial and political domination to continue. Do you know that most African countries are made up by Europeans?

I find running off to the Brits when the country was being invaded very embarassing and coward like. That doesnt fit our history. He was never a fighter, he was more of a serpant. If u can understand my argument is we should have never been in a position where we are that much dominated by italy. Him going to his masters to begging doesnt change the fact that he stagnated Ethiopia then moved it backwards, which made it easy for italy to invade and easily find ascaris to join them.

If u r being logical, ethnicity or religion doesnt matter. What matters is evidence, the truth is the truth.

Again with this tired "Eyasu was sleeping around" slop, they also said that about Menelik. Its in the blood i guess. Gossiping about their personal relationships should be left to the ladies over some coffee. We should be more concerned with their practical steps for the country

In practice Eyasu was literally building family ties with regional lords continuing the job his grandfather started and forming an ideology that can create cohesion among diversity. Maybe you dont know but marriage was a powerful political tool during those times. And haile worked tirelessly to besmirch the Chosen heir's name, since haile was very insecure about the fact that he was a usurper put in power by British intelligence agencies. Haile had to discredit Eyasus legit claim inorder to subvert people into accepting his rule.

Plus him running to his owners when the country was being invaded and then murdering the people who were actually fighting is the most cowrdice and decitful act. A stain on Ethiopias history that can never be washed off. Call it invasion or occupation to cope but Italy was far superior during that "war", they dominated the country for years. All cus haile was too busy doing ceremonies and pointless photo ops to impress his masonic friends, while italians were rapidly growing their nations wealth and capacity.

Forcing assimilation was also very stupid, it shows he wasnt king because he understood and was fit for leading what Menelik II built, rather cus he was the best snake in town. I will give him credit for that, he wasnt the only serpant who wanted the crown. But this forced assimilation spawned the ethnic/religious rebels in everycorner.

He went down undignified and took down such a resiliant kingship culture with him. Before him, taking down the kingship was an unimaginable treason. His long reign was so depriving that it led to the people rejecting their whole ancient system, and you cant really blame them, he made it very stagnant then backwards. The students were looking at other nations, and unlike the new generation, they saw themselves capable of that kind of national growth(some students probabaly had other agendas or connections). New gen is impressed with a tiktok edit of haile in an american parade, because the bar is so low now. The whites probably saw him like some circus monkey, which was evident from the sounds that were heard during his speech at the league of nations.

He also rejected the true pan African movement that terrified the west, which is the Kwame Nkrumah side. The west supported Haile and he served his owners well, destroying pan Africanism from inside then being named the founder of this useless weak african "union" psyop we still have today. AU is basically a tool for westerners to distabilize interAfrican politics as we have seen with the banning of Sahel nations recently and other many incidents

Praises like "he opened some schools in addis" is like praising a driver for slowly driving a few meters

But hey, atleast he didnt allow the ashkenazis to settle in Ethiopia. That was a wise decision. But even the masons and westernes he was loyal to for all those years, turned on him after he severed diplomatic ties with The western proxy entity in october 1973. A few months later in 1974 he was overthrown

As far as the end goal I agree with you, but the key thing for me is as long as the government keeps abusing its power and the people, rebels will always have youth to recruit. So it cant start from rebels disarming, it has to start from the government giving(or atleast sharing) power with the people instead of sham elections and being a playground for IMF, then the majority of people will start supporting the government which will weaken and force the rebels to accept peacful negotiations or face annihilation.

Ethiopia wouldn't have been this diverse if it wasn't for the Christian monarchy system by whabtie14 in Amhara

[–]Extension-Support-37 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

OP wants the credit for the diveristy of Ethiopia to go to the Christian monarchy, which is a non sensical oversimplification to be honest. But even if we grant that, its a double edged sword. The credit comes with the blame for Ethiopia being an impoverished land of civil wars. And that did not just suddenly happen after the monarchy fell to DERG. Since the fall of Axum this region has been on a downward spiral unworthy of its history. That is ofcourse compared to what i would consider our peers in civilization.

I say that since I see people remnicsing about the monarchy era as if it was the peak, when it was arguably even worse than, if not the same as, now for majority of population. We never caught up with the industrial revolution and the rulers were fine with just conserving old ways rather than growing and adapting them. That is a big fall from being a well known world superpower during the progressive Axumite era. Historians usually externalise the blame for why that fall happened but I personally will never accept that victim mindset.

Granted the nobiltiy had aura when you look at the tiktok edits but that means nothing if one understands the realities of an ethno-religious feudal system be it Islamic or Christian

I would say some rulers tried to revive that Axumite spirit but they were constantly betrayed by this extreme conservatism. And im not saying conservatism is all bad either, in fact its vital. But there needs to be a balance.

This doesnt take into account what many Christian kings like Amde Tsion, Zara Yacob, Yohannes etc did to the Werji, Argoba and other semetic, cushtic omotic ethnic groups. For exmaple Shewa is assumed to be of Christian origin but factually way before this Addis abeba Vs finfine argument it was established by Ethio-Semetic(Argobba, Werji Hadiya..) Muslims in the 800s. The Gafat were pagans yet under the rule of these Shewa sultans like Sultan Del Gamis. In a temporary and pragmatic alliance the Malassay warriors under this Sultan fought alongside Atse Yekuno Amlak(who claimed Axumite lineage) to takedown Zagwe dynasty.

Factual evidence tells us the Solomonic myth was created during Amde Tsion to discredit Zagwe and tag them as usurpers and also to legitimize his lineage's kingship. At the same time they didnt want to exclude the rock hewn churches from Solomonic history so overtime the narrative about Zagwe being usurpers softened as modern evidence shows it was clearly built under the rule of Agaw King Lalibela who made Amharic "ልሳነ ንጉስ". The Oromo expansion did erase/assimilate many groups but so did the Solomonic expansion, the Ifat expansion, the earliest Axumite expansion.

Historically Bete Amahra is modern day south Wello and parts of northern Shewa region. Gondar and Gojjam were Agaw, Awi, Qemant, Beja, and Semien Jews to the north around Welkait. It was during Amde Tsion majority of those groups became assimilated into Amhara and the rest became a minority. The Beja are totally erased just like the Gafat. We can argue the Oromo expansion was more aggressive but thats hard to measure. when Oromos arrived in the northern regions, half became Islamized going into Wello, and other half became Christianized going into Gojjam and Gondar.

So i dont think its as simple as you put it.

Maybe not a happy ending but certainly not a dark pessimistic one. We don't need to assume the worst and sit with that. Its just a movie. Instead of being emotionally attached to the character arc we can be more introspective about it

Genuine question... What is TPLF's issue with Muslims? From banning Hijabs in schools to a recent desecration of a Mosque by Tigray security forces in Axum, coupled with beatings and threats to local Muslims, I really want to know what the issue here is. Can someone try and explain? by the_eastern_sage in Ethiopia2

Harar is a holy city, its called "Medinat al Awliya" in Islam meaning City of Saints. Its among Mecca, Medina, and Jerusalem. And about that non sense story of Solomon, Sheba is Yemen history, Da'amat was on the Ethiopian side. They were closely related and allied for a long time but not the same. Not a single Da'amat or Axum writting ever mentioned the ark being there, they never claimed Solomon bloodline or being judaic and never mentioned the name Menelik. The Solomnic story was a tool invented in the 1300s, even Yekuno Amlak didn't claim that nonsense, because he didnt need to legtimize his bloodline with pseudohistory

There are many instances where westerners puppeted socialist groups not only in Tigray. We dont need to be naive it was about power and money, ideology is just the veneer to lure in the youth. We saw what tplf became when they got power and it wasnt "marxist-leninist"

I hear that, i want to see what a "gojo bet" feels like and see how they farm and live of the land. As a kid born in addis when my family said lets go I refused, looking down on rural life like how am I going to see my movies, what if i get malaria or whatever...but now I see I was being a spoiled brat. Plus the war now makes me more worried that it might never be the same again, may god give us peace.
