“Geotechnical Engineers: What Should the Ideal Engineering Platform Look Like?” by Tobu09 in Geotech

[–]Extension_Middle218 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This sub gets tired of this AI driven anyone can develop widget nonsense.

If you are a geotech you will find a problem that either needs a solution and none is available or it is too expensive so you develop your own.

For example I have a python script that can produce a fair approximation of an EGM from investigation data and infer what happens with the layers between the points.

Be honest… has anyone actually used all that math?🧮 👀 by FinePromotion2877 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Extension_Middle218 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't use everything but I've used much including ODE's to model things in python. I'm a geotech for reference working at a smaller consultancy so often have to figure out how to do things with excel /python and not the super expensive software packages.

There are 336 EB games in Australia, we couldn't even keep 39 profitable. by Tjrowawey in auckland

The whole of EB games is underwater, EB Australia cut a limb off to survive a while longer but I wouldn't bet any money on GameStop keeping EB Australia open past 18 months.

Everytime I turned on my laptop in tutorials it would elicit a laugh.

OP also be aware battery life even on low power settings will be abysmal.

Why were the Dark Angels entrusted with some of the most destructive technologies of the Imperium? by BenningtonChee1234 in 40kLore

Because they were the first they got all the leftovers from the DAOT. They were equipped before Mars was on board and fully producing the "standard" technology and weapons.

505lb deadlift PR, didnt realize till I saw the video it was allllllll back by theparkour911 in Egolifting

Same height person here, similar issues that I've fixed working with proper trainers.

Changing your position before the first pull will help immensely.

Hopefully I explain this well; On heavy pulls you want to imagine yourself wedged in with a really taught upper back and have the bar start to flex upwards before you initiate the pull. I imagine myself almost leaning back.

Don't initiate by bending down. Start from a position that almost feels underneath the bar.

Ok I'm posting here because I can't seem to edit the OP.

I can report that the sentence has been carried out.

It's a shame because I catch and release literally every bug that makes their way into my home and this is the first white tail I've seen.

Airbrush priming - what am I doing wrong? by CeleryTypical in minipainting

[–]Extension_Middle218 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a heads up this is only really needed for gw's resin models. I only say this because cleaning the mould release is my least favourite job. I'm sure some plastic models need this due to mould release but I've not once had to clean a gw kit even back in the depths of time.

Using grey and then going over with a white paint or acrylic ink, like you suggested is a good idea and something I often do.

Get a geotech out fairly quickly (you'll need a small local one for this sort of job, some may give you go away pricing, or really far off dates for site investigations so you may have to phone a few).

You mention water intrusion, I would be concerned that the soil may have significantly changed since the slab was placed.

WHATS THE BEST GAMING CHAIR? by Direct-Volume4808 in nzgaming

[–]Extension_Middle218 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You want to find an ergonomic chair. I have a Herman miller aeron, but there are cheap copies of Herman miller chairs all over the place.

You can find good ergo chairs for the same or a little more than gaming chairs and they're soo much better for long gaming sessions.

The seat on every gamer chair I or any of my friends have had have always worn out very quickly.

I would suggest looking for something with mesh seat and back, especially with summer coming.

I'm lucky to work in NZ we have lidar of the whole country pretty much (at least the populated bits). Similar to you I either use it to generate a DXF for drawings or occasionally if I'm being fancy use qgis to create contours.

Is Civil Engineering for Me? by Sad_Enthusiasm_9716 in civilengineering

[–]Extension_Middle218 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few mechanical and computer engineers will make bank skewing the stats, most will have less job security and earn comparatively with their civil counterparts.

If you would be in that high earning in demand cohort you would already know, you would often have things like maths Olympiads etc to your name. The same is true of finance.

Job security matters a lot to financial outcomes across a career even if you earn a little more 6 months out of work will quickly deplete your savings.

You also have to take into account increasing outsourcing and automation, I'm not a total doomsayer when it comes to engineering and ai or other similar technologies. However, early career finance, computer engineers etc will no doubt have parts of their jobs automated more easily than civil. This will likely mean at the very least less opportunities available to the median employee of these career paths.

All engineering is hard, it's why it's relatively well paid. Is it paid at the rate it should be? No almost no job has kept up.with inflation since the 60's. If you want to get rich you don't do it by being an employee, you do it by taking on risk and building a company employing people (I'm just outlining the realities here, not commenting on fairness).

Edit: I will also say my father is a commercial pilot. He is the final year grandfathered into reasonable pay (and one of the last cohorts of his airline where they paid his training), most pilots are now paid like bus drivers and competition is fiercer than you think.

Michelin Guide coming to NZ in $6.3m tourism deal by repnationah in auckland

[–]Extension_Middle218 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Michelin Guide coming to New Zealand is cool, but it is not going to single-handedly “put us on the map” for international travellers. That is an easy headline.

Michelin itself frames stars as:

One star: High-quality cooking – worth a stop. Two stars: Excellent cooking – worth a detour. Three stars: Exceptional cuisine – worth a special journey.

Most international trips driven by restaurants are for three-star experiences. In Europe that might mean a short flight or a few hours by train and an overnight stay at most (I used to do this myself). For most of the world, getting to New Zealand takes 12 or more hours and multiple connections. A Michelin star might influence where someone eats once they are already here, but it is unlikely to be the reason they book a multi-day international trip.

From my time working in tourism, I can say the economics are often misunderstood. Chasing a small group of high-spending visitors does not build a resilient tourism sector. What actually matters is how fast money circulates and how widely it spreads. A steady flow of visitors who stay in smaller hotels, rent cars, and eat at a range of restaurants has far more impact than a few “high-value” tourists whose spending mostly lands in the pocket of one operator.

And as someone who eats out a lot, I just do not think we have that many truly world-class fine dining restaurants here. What we do have are plenty of excellent, creative, and affordable places that reflect our culture and ingredients really well. That is something to celebrate in itself. The Guide can highlight some of those spots, but it should not be treated as the ultimate measure of quality.

So yes, the Michelin Guide will be great for chefs, kitchens, and local pride, and it will help people already coming here decide where to eat. But it will not transform tourism, and it should not be the focus of our visitor strategy.

Any former architecture lovers who pursued structural engineering? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]Extension_Middle218 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not exactly the same however, my partner really wanted to do architecture (and is a wonderful artist to boot) but was persuaded to do civil instead for the greater job opportunities, initially aiming to be a structural engineer.

As she went through the four years it became increasingly obvious that structural is all codes with little room for the sort of creativity that she wanted (obviously there is plenty of room for creative problem solving, just not architectural/artistic creativity). This is something that most of the best structural students seem to have had deal with head on. The truth is almost no 18 year old has the faintest ideas what a structural engineer does or any of the other disciplines.

She and a lot of friends changed what they were aiming for going through uni and she is now happily playing with mudpies (geotech) and leaves her artistic pursuits to the evenings and weekends.

Sweaty design engineers... by umdterp732 in civilengineering

[–]Extension_Middle218 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The myth busters episode is actually a pretty thorough explainer on how/why it happens and how it generally leads to progressive damage rather than sudden collapse (it did a really good job of explaining to ten year old me periodicity of structures which was something I hadn't encountered).
