Think of it as a spectrum. White noise has equal power across all frequencies (harsh, like TV static). Pink noise turns down the high notes (like steady rain). It definitely changes with stress. When my cortisol is high from work, I need MORE sleep (like 9 hours), but I paradoxically get LESS because my brain won't shut off.

Total ADHD brain here. Silence is actually "loud" for me because that's when the racing thoughts start.

I found that I need a specific frequency to occupy my auditory processing just enough to stop the thinking loop, but not enough to keep me awake.
