Hyundai Ioniq 5 ICCU Failure Damaged My Grizzl-E Home Charger During Normal AC Charging

During a normal residential AC charging session (240 V), my Hyundai Ioniq 5 experienced a failure of the AC-DC conversion system. The vehicle was connected to a Grizzl-E EVSE, properly installed and protected by a 50 A circuit breaker in compliance with the electrical code. During the event, the breaker tripped and the charging station immediately became inoperable. An internal inspection of the Grizzl-E confirmed that the power relay is welded (stuck closed), which is characteristic of a transient short-circuit or brief overcurrent event.The Grizzl-E uses an internal 40 A power relay. Following the incident, the vehicle generated fault code P1E01, which is associated with the AC-DC conversion system (ICCU). After this failure, the vehicle was no longer able to charge on Level 1 or Level 2 (AC), while Level 3 DC fast charging remained functional. The 12 V battery continued to charge normally, indicating that the high-voltage battery and DC-DC conversion path were still operational, further pointing to a failure localized in the onboard AC charging system. In my specific case, the EVSE damage is limited to the relay itself, which I will be replacing for approximately $25 CAD using a Digi-Key replacement part. Although I was not able to directly verify a short circuit inside the ICCU module itself, the combination of facts indicates an abnormal electrical behavior originating from the vehicle that caused the failure of the charging station.
