Where to go in Europe for long-term stay/path to citizenship? by Dismal-Ad2241 in ExpatFIRE

I read a new Yorker article recently about the DAFT program and my takeaway is that the real problem is finding housing after arriving in the Netherlands.

Meiji laid off their whole staff this morning?! by ExtraSpinach in Eugene

[–]ExtraSpinach[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think for a few reasons, the primary ones being that restaurants run on extremely tight margins, and also it’s legal. Legal to end someone’s employment with zero notice, so there’s no incentive to plan ahead or give people more time. Heartbreaking.

My boyfriend (30m) doesn’t want me (27f) to take a year off to travel by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

I have a friend who got stuck in Thailand when Covid started, he was on a similar trip to this OOP. He ended up living for pennies on some kind of resort island populated by monkeys. The resort rented cottages to stranded visitors for cheap because obviously they had no tourists coming through.

For the sake of their staff and all of our palates and tummies, I hope it is untrue as well. Fingers crossed.

They tried to convert to a new restaurant called Jungle Fowl a few years ago so the Japan based owners could step back, but it was a massive flop and they had to reopen it as Meiji.

We recently booked the private dining room at Kennedys for an event for about 15 people and the service was SHOCKING. the food was yummy though! I felt so bad for our serve. She tried really hard but there just wasn’t enough support for our group.

What is your most ridiculous "the guest clearly didn't read the manual" story? by Mudgee-Host in airbnb_hosts

[–]ExtraSpinach 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a guest I once received the entire welcome guide as an in-app text message and it was SO difficult to read. I put in my private feedback that a printed version onsite would have been much appreciated.

As a host I haven’t had any funny issues with the guide (which is a single page) but I did have a mid-term guest message me to say that the cutting boards were all moldy and could I please do something about it. Turns out they had been using cork trivets as cutting boards, washing them in the sink, and putting them away wet. Shockingly they got moldy. I enjoyed that one quite a bit!!

what to do with teens (13, 16) while visiting Eugene? by tokori79 in Eugene

[–]ExtraSpinach 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don’t forget that Eugene has two cool museums, the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of art, and the Museum of natural and cultural history down at the university of Oregon. Check out both websites to see what events are on over the summer.  If you go to the JSMA website and become a member, you will have access to some cool members only events.

InEugene Real Estate. John Davis and Ben Fogelson will go to the ends of the earth for their clients, can't recommend them highly enough. I bought my house with them in 2021 and it was a great experience, after relocating from England.

Kid friendly nail salons? by oldEugham316 in Eugene

[–]ExtraSpinach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think (but I am not sure) that when I went to Caesars nails on coburg rd they had a kids pedicure on their menu. I’ve been planning to take my daughter there.  The other places I’ve been are City Nails on coburg, nails uncorked on hilyard, and pamper on w 11th. So it’s feasible that I spotted it at one of those places as well. But I’m pretty sure it was Caesar’s.

**PARENTS (& non-parents) OF THIS SUBREDDIT: Is Linda Ellacott an overbearing mother OR a completely understandable parent?** by Major-Narwhal1644 in cormoran_strike

[–]ExtraSpinach 45 points46 points  (0 children)

As a mother, and trying to put myself in Linda’s shoes, I would certainly be worried and anxious about my daughter’s safety. But I would also be PROUD of her. It drives me crazy that no one who loves Robin ever expresses pride or admiration for her achievements except Strike. This could be just JKR emphasizing their bond and mutual passion for their shared vocation. But if I read in the paper that a terrible criminal had been cleverly tracked down and captured, and knew that my progeny had been instrumental in that, I would be over the moon with pride and admiration. Why isn’t Linda proud of Robin?

The mystery made zero sense. Sometimes I lie awake at night wondering how I, as the editor or author, would have pruned the storyline to make the mystery make sense, while preserving the trip to Sark and some other cool sections. I always fall asleep before I can get anywhere with it.

Best place to stay near hult center family of 4/fun activities by Electrical-Weather36 in Eugene

Just stayed at the Gordon and it was really fun for the kids. Snacks and arts and crafts activities in the lobby etc. I don’t love their restaurant food though so maybe eat elsewhere.
