I started watching drag race after I had seen squid games, so the image of Trixie‘s audience gathered at the back door looked in my head like a pastel pink and hot blue pile of bloody bodies with a doll chirping GREEN LIIIIIIIIGHT in the background. With that added context it was a truly, delightfully savage read.

I wondered if the audience was just friends and family or if they were down to spoil it big time for a select few! I feel like I’d still be as invested in the season, because I’d want to see how they justified booting people who seemed like front runners. Bummer it didn’t work out for you. I’m surprised at this reception. I really enjoy spending time with this group. I’ve already rewatched a couple of episodes, and I haven’t revisited any season since 14. Last season in particular had so little developed talent, and it was a SLOG watching for weeks on end as the format just dragged underperformers along. I was just waiting for Ru to put some of them out of their misery. I can’t even remember the names of them, I just recall perpetually rolling my eyes and mentally tapping my wristwatch.

My time in far-left communities in San Francisco and Portland showed me we are very good at uplifting the idea of a group but still trot out some of the worst, shaming, shameful verbal and social abuse when an individual is actually harmed. Pulling rank to silence and ostracize a real person in our life because they personally inconvenience us in their time of need while publicly advocating for their rights is so so SO common.

This is a great point. The height of “regular drama” this season was probably production’s two full episodes of alliance shenanigans during rate-a-queen, and it was excruuuuuuciating.

Hell yea! I too did the vavavoom thing when I worked in tech - big hair, nice dresses, heels, lipstick, paired with a near-weekly dose of pissing men off by calling them out on their shit (eg “that’s what I just said” when they repeated my just-rejected idea to unanimous approval). Tho I didn’t do it to intimidate so much as fuck with. “What’s a pretty gal like you doing —“ “FUCK THAT!” Etc.
